EP210: Helping Hairdressers Avoid Industry Burnout, with Hayley Jepson (aka The Resilient Hairdresser) Aug 16, 2021
Show notes I love a niche, because if you try to cater to everyone you can get lost in the noise of many and your message won’t speak to anyone. So, it’s important you have a targeted niche market and speak to a customer or client in a certain way which they can really relate to. And that’s what todays guest, Hayley Jepson, has done.

In my conversation with Hayley, we get to hear how she recognised that many hairdressers and salon owners were feeling stressed, burntout, anxious and overwhelmed by the daily pressures of salon life. Something Hayley had experienced as a hairdresser herself.

Finding it hard to manage the day to day pressures of busy salon life on top of depression, she went and got some therapy. “This was the best thing for me and I can honestly say it changed my life” says Hayley.

Hayley made the huge decision to quit hairdressing and inspired by the therapy began working as a psychotherapist full time. But what Hayley reveals in this episode was how hairdressing pulled her back in, and noticed the things that had previously worn her down about hairdressing no longer bothered her. It was these skills gained through both having therapy and practising it that were serving her well. Something that inspired her to help other hairdressers and salon owners feeling overwhelmed. Step up, The Resilient Hairdresser!

With her down-to-earth ways of teaching that oozes warmth and humour, you’ll hear that when it comes to avoiding industry burnout, Hayley really knows her stuff. Press play!

EP209: Why Your Salon Business Should Have a YouTube Channel in 2021, with Adrian Salisbury Aug 09, 2021
Show notes Right this second people are searching out keywords to help them find the answers to their current hair problems. So how cool is it that they could be discovering your salon business by landing on one of your videos, helping them to fix that problem they are currently searching for.

This is exactly why your salon business should have a YouTube Channel. The potential to having this could far outweigh the rewards you’re currently getting from all the energy you’re putting into Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. And let me tell you, It doesn’t need to be paid advertising to get your salon business videos in front of the right people.

Helping us with all of this is todays guest, Adrian Salisbury. I’m sure this isn’t a name you’re going to be familiar with. But let me tell you he is one of the best when it comes to teaching entrepreneurs in recording incredible videos and getting them out there to the audience that matters to your business. I was fortunate enough to come across Adrian back at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020, when I wanted to learn more on getting the most out of creating video production content and live streaming. Since then he has become one of the most influential people to me.

I’m truly grateful for everything I have learned from him, and that’s why I’m stoked to have Adrian joining me today. He is going to be sharing some of his YouTube Academy with us. It is brilliant stuff! This will includes knowing what videos your perspective clients are searching for, tips to building out your channel and creating killer content on YouTube that will bring in new clients to your salon business.

If you’re serious about owning your space online for your salon business then get looking to the second biggest search engine after Google. YouTube!

Show notes Many freelancers will admit that retailing can be a struggle for them. Having to carry a large range of inventory retail products is just one of the many reasons that can prove challenging. But now freelancers can have a complete retail display from the palm of their hand. And today we’re going to learn how.

I’m joined by Aaron Dorn, founder of the GoSalon app – currently in Beta mode. He will be sharing with us why he has created this app to help freelance hair professionals grow their retail sales at anytime, anyplace, anywhere, whether salon based, on the road or from home.

An award-winning freelance hairdresser, Aaron created the app with himself in mind. He says, “I wanted to earn money from the products that I recommended to my clients by sharing links on my phone”.

GoSalon is all about giving you the influence and comfort in knowing that your loyal customers are buying the products that you recommended at the best possible price. An entire retail display in your pocket. I can’t wait to find out more. Let’s hit that play button together!

EP207: Creating One of the Fastest Growing Brands in the Beauty Industry – Danny Gray of War Paint for Men Jul 26, 2021
Show notes Today, I’m going to give you something a little different. Because you’re not going to hear from a hairdresser or barber, but from a business entrepreneur who has created one of the fastest growing brands in the beauty industry, Danny Gray of War Paint for Men. He’s going to take us right back to why being bullied for his appearance as young kid led him to creating and designing War Paint for Men; a make-up brand specifically for the male audience.

I get so many of my influences from outside of the hair industry. So by bringing more future guests onto the HTCI podcast that are away from the world of hair, I’m keen for you to learn of their first-hand experiences from within their own industry sector. Thats what we are to get in this conversation with Danny today, as he will be sharing some seriously cool stuff that will translate perfectly to all of you that are looking for an entrepreneurial journey – no matter where or what that is.

I cannot wait to get behind the story of Danny with you all. How did he create a global brand success with War Paint for Men? Let’s find out!

EP206: James Atkinson (aka The Life Of Hair) – How to Become a Successful Hairdresser on YouTube (Part 2) Jul 19, 2021
    Show notes

Little did James Atkinson know that when he first started out with his ‘The Life Of Hair’ YouTube channel was how successful it was going to become.

Now with 65.3K subscribers and counting, The Life Of Hair is officially Europes No.1 Hairdresser on YouTube. BOOM! So I’m curious to learn how James has gone about about achieving this. It’s to make prime cut listening for all of you wanting to break in to or simply struggling to find success on YouTube; the second biggest search engine after Google.

This interview you’re about to hear with James is Part 2 of ‘How To Become a Successful YouTube Hairdresser‘, originally recorded back in Lockdown July 2020 exclusively for our Patreon premium ‘Xtra Show’ podcast. As we now come up to celebrating our first birthday of our HTCI Patreon members site, I wanted to unlock today one episode of these Premium podcasts so that you can all get to hear the mega gold nuggets of information that we hold back for our Patreon members only every week. Step up James Atkinson.

With it’s complex algorithms, tagging, titles and SEO, YouTube is a complicated game that you need to understand on how to play it, if you want to find success on it. For lots of us the many hours of investment spent creating these videos leaves us feeling both frustrated and disappointed when we see the limited views and engagement our posted videos get. It’s little wonder then why so many of us simply give up on creating content for YouTube. But I shoutout this loud, “DON’T GIVE UP JUST YET”. As I already said James is Europes No.1 hairdresser on YouTube and he is about to reveal some of his experiences that have helped him to go on and find success on YouTube. I promise what he is about to share will get us all rethinking our YouTube strategy. It’s that good!

*WARNING* If you’re not on YouTube then you might be seriously missing out. Hit Play!

Classic Reruns: Trevor Sorbie – An Interview with a Hairdressing Icon Jul 09, 2021
Show notes Icon, legend, innovator. These were just a few of the words that I used to describe this very special guest who joined me on the podcast back in Episode 23. Yes, we were beyond excited (and a tad nervous) when I had one of my biggest honours of my life by interviewing the one and only, Trevor Sorbie. Thats why for the second of our ‘Classic Reruns’ episode I had to relive this magical interview with you all today; nearly 4 years on since we originally recorded it in August 2017.

In this episode, we once again have the opportunity to re-listen to Trevor sharing the stories from his incredible career in hairdressing, and his firsthand experience of training some of the worlds top hairdressers. He also debunks some of myths on what makes a great hairdresser and offer up a few inspirational words on getting the very best out of your hairdressing career – it’s of epic proportion!

I hope you enjoy this ‘Classic Reruns’ episode and don’t forget, after listening to this conversation with Trevor go and check out our full library listings of podcasts and take a listen to some of the many other great names that we have had come onto the show. And we can’t wait to bring you many more great names for the future. Stay tuned!

Classic Reruns: Sophia Hilton – Not Another Salon Jul 01, 2021
Show notes Welcome to the first of our ‘Classic Reruns’ as we delve deep into our library of episodes to bringing you some of our most classic podcasts ever recorded since our launch back in 2017. So I couldn’t think of a better one to kickoff with than this interview with Sophia Hilton, recorded for Episode 6 April 2017. Currently our most listened to podcast with over 10,000 downloads, it had to be this classic How To Cut It episode.

In this interview we got to learn all about Sophia’s story into hairdressing, including how she got into it and why she went about setting up ‘Not Another Salon’. We also get some wonderful insights into the huge social success of the ‘Not Another Salon’ Instagram account – something I know many of you love hearing about.

This is a terrific listen from one of hairdressings biggest names, and all in her very first recorded podcast interview. I know you’ll love this ‘Classic Reruns’ so enjoy!

    EP205: Tom Chapman – A Mighty Lion! Jun 21, 2021
Show notes I’m delighted to bring back onto the podcast founder of ‘The Lions Barber Collective‘, Tom Chapman. Tom is truly a Mighty Lion and I always love talking to him. Last on the show back in Episode 76 I wanted to catch up with Tom and learn more on all of his epic work he continues to do when it comes to raising prevention of suicide in men.

A big statement I know, but Tom continues to inspire me more than anyone else in the industry and that’s all because of everything he does within it. In this conversation today he will bring us all up to speed on this, including becoming the author of his latest book ‘The Mighty Lions’ and the launch of both The Lions Barbers in London’s Carnaby Street, and the Collective Pride Awards.

Theres so much brilliant stuff to cover in this conversation. Listen in to hear why by hitting that play button.
