    EP256: Little Princess Trust & Great Lengths – A Perfect Partnership! Sep 26, 2022
Show notes Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides free natural hair wigs to children and young people, up to 24 years old, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

In the first of our collaborative podcast series with Great Lengths UK, we’re going to be learning about the incredible work that the Little Princess Trust is doing. Plus we get to hear how they have a perfect partnership with Great Lengths that’s making a huge difference in helping to meet the demand of supplying free natural hair wigs to children and young people.

Joining me for this conversation is Wendy Tarplee-Morris, Director of Service and Impact and Phil Brace, Chief Executive Officer at The Little Princess Trust, along with James Henderson, Salon owner of M Hair Nottingham & Great Lengths Charity Ambassador.

Our conversation starts at what the Little Princess Trust is all about, and how it was established after the tragic loss to Wendy’s 5 year old daughter to cancer in 2005. We then go all the way through to how James introduced the Great Lengths donations scheme that provides its pre-used hair extensions to the Little Princess Trust through it’s 1,500 Great Lengths salons across the UK and Ireland.

There is no underestimating the importance of what this perfect partnership between the Little Princess Trust and Great Lengths is doing. AND why, we as an industry, can play a massive part too in not only helping to provide free natural wigs to children and young people, but to also reduces waste by finding a new use for the hair.

This podcast could not come at a better time. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month that’s all about increasing the awareness and helping to raising funds for those affected by childhood cancer. Tune in, this really is all about Hair & Hope!

Show notes Heffy Wheeler is a prime example of todays digital hair generation who has literally built their success on social media. But behind all this success lies a story much deeper to the person than just the content posts and videos we all adore seeing.

With just £30 in her pocket and Instagram and Facebook pages, Heffy Wheeler utilised her social media to grow HX Hair business into a multi-award winning salon. Thats where we start the story today with Heffy. But like all stories, it’s never plain sailing. This certainly rings true for Heffy.

After falling pregnant, Heffy developed ‘perinatal’ mental health illness. It was one of the darkest moments in her life. She says, “I felt so detached from this period of my life”. However with her fearless determination, coping stratergies and support from her husband she has battled back. We get to hear how she is now using her channels to raise awareness of mental health and get people talking about a subject that’s extremely close to her heart.

Then final part of the podcast is all TikTok. Heffy reveals how during lockdown she threw herself into what was then, a relatively new platform. Being on TikTok so early was a move that proved very fruitful for both her and her salon business. You’ll hear why in our conversation today!

Now regarded as a leading TikTok Hairdressing Star, Heffy is also going to share with us her tips and tricks that are perfect for all of you wanting to build success on TikTok, too.

Classic Rerun: Alcohol, Drugs and Suicide Attempt! Niall Colgan’s Incredible Comeback Story Aug 29, 2022
Show notes Welcome to a How To Cut It ‘Classic Rerun’ with Niall Colgan. Delving deep into our extensive podcast libraries, our Classic Rerun’s bring you some of our most popular episodes since we launched back in 2017.

Originally published in September 2019, this episode with Niall is our second highest download of all time. And for good reason! Niall’s story he shared then was what I described as a ‘podcast blockbuster’.So be prepared. You’re about to hear is one of the most powerful, emotional and hard hitting stories that we have ever brought you over the last five and half years!

An incredible comeback story, you’ll hear how Niall seemed to have it all. Enjoying great success, before the cracks began to show, I guarantee that you’ll all be hanging on every last word Niall shared with us back in 2019.

In 2009 Niall opened Niall Colgan Hairdressing, and in his very own words said, “I was flying by the seat of my pants, and with no clue on how to be a leader”! With this pressure he ended up having a total breakdown in October 2013, followed by a suicide attempt when it appeared that he had lost both his business and young family.

Hitting rock bottom was the turning point for Niall to rebuild his life. At the time of recording in 2019 he was 6 years into sobriety and with his partner Melie by his side and two young sons, Niall has gone from strength to strength.

Niall is truly inspirational. Listen in to hear his words on recovery from the depths of being rock bottom, and how he’s rebuilt both his life and thriving salon business out of a hard working ethic and huge passion for hair.

EP251: Getting Back Up When Life Knocks You Down, with Marcus King Aug 15, 2022
Show notes Let me tell you this: It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get back up.

There will be times when you feel like you’re on top of the world. Then life stops you right in your tracks! It throws you a big punch that knocks you sideways, and possibly out! You’ve hit rock bottom! This is exactly what today’s guest Marcus King experienced, and all within a two year period of the recent COVID pandemic.

Salon owner of the ‘King and I Norton’ in the North East of England and many industry awards to his name including British Men’s Hairdresser of the Year and North-Eastern Hairdresser of the Year, Marcus King looked to have it all. Then in 2020 the COVID pandemic arrives. Salons around the world go into lockdown. With the anxiety of salon closure, the furlough of staff, a compromising business partnership, short of money, the break up of his relationship, the tragic loss of his very close sister and illness, Marcus’s world was literally turned upside down in a very short space of time.

Today I want to get Marcus’s story that led him to such dark and difficult times. But before we get to this part of the story, I want to go right back. Right back to when Marcus entered into the hair industry as a young 14 year old lad, and how he went on to work on stages around the world with Hooker and Young, before leading us along to why winning at the British Hairdressing Awards meant so much to him. Then we learn about the exiting times of opening his salon business just before the pandemic, and then… Battling the very dark days of lockdown and how it all led Marcus to mental health illness, that culminated in a stroke. Then like all big blockbusters, we get the comeback story!

This is a hard-hitting episode that is going to help inspire and empower you to know that however difficult things get, you can comeback event stronger. Marcus is full proof of this. He’s discovered resiliance and determination to adapt in the face of adversity, trauma, ill health and loss. By turning to well-being and choosing a healthier lifestyle, Marcus is once again transforming pain into possibility. You’ll get so much from this monmuental episode.

EP250: Why you Need to Understand the Science of Textured Hair, with Jacqui McIntosh Aug 08, 2022
Show notes To be a successful hair professional, it’s important that you have skill sets that sits across all hair types. Including textured hair. Unfortunately for many of us, when its comes to understanding both the technique and science of textured hair, theres still much needed room for improvement. But fear not! We’re about to start changing that for you today.

In this episode I’m joined by the hairdresser often respectfully referred to as being the all-knowing “authority of textured hair and its business”, Jacqui McIntosh.

When Jacqui talks about hair she means business. A globally renowned salon Hairstylist, International Educator, Texture Management Specialist, Qualified teacher, Assessor, Internal Verifier, Award Winning Educator and Trichologist. She was recently celebrated as an industry pioneer for British Afro hairdressing, for black history month 2020. And with skill sets that sits across all hair types, we’re in the company of a true expert when it comes to understanding the science of textured hair.

Having Jacqui coming on the show today, I have so much to ask her on understanding the science of textured hair. Number 1, as hairdressers why do we struggle to truly embrace the science of textured hair, what benefits can it have on our clients, industry careers and businesses. All will be revealed later.

Going deeper into the podcast I also ask, why are we saying textured not curly hair? And why Jacqui believes not everyone has to do textured hair?

This is a brilliant and captivating conversation. You’ll get so much from what Jacqui shares! Let’s go to it, Howtocutter’s!
