EP249: Meet the ‘Popular Nobody’ Barber – A Powerhouse of American Barbering! Aug 01, 2022
Show notes You’ve seen the title and you may be thinking – “What the heck do you mean by a Powerhouse!?” A Powerhouse to me is someone who is a great source of influence and inspiration. Do you agree?

For this next instalment of our collaborative podcast series with Denman Professional, I’m thrilled to be joined by someone I believe to be a true powerhouse of American barbering, John Mosley aka the Popular Nobody.

As a newly appointed Denman US Ambassador, John has worked with names like Eminem, Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar and many more. He is all about motivating through education and knowledge. A big part of this education is about focusing the way he teaches barbers. Today we get the story to John’s purpose, how he has hustled to the top by doing what he loves and of course, a good dose of John’s motivational words.

You’ll get to hear his entry into barbering, why he adopted the Popular Nobody name and brand. We talk too about his thoughts on the difference between the US and UK barbering. Is there a difference? Thats not all though. We also get to learn about John’s favourite tools and his love hate relationship with social media. Theres so much packed into this episode brought to you by Denman Professional.

A super smart barber and business man, I love John’s motivational teachings. This is an interview that prooves humble beginnings can lead to humble success. And for all of John’s barbering fame and success, remaining humble remains at the core of his values. Legit!

EP248: Jack Howard – Remaining Relevant in an Ever-Changing Hair Industry Landscape Jul 25, 2022
Show notes Being relevant is essential in this extremely competitive hair industry world. Keeping up to date can help an individual or business become more dynamic and marketable to brands, hair professionals and clients. This is something that todays guest––the globally renowned hair colourist Jack Howard successfully does.

In September 2022, Jack will celebrate 40 years in the hair industry. After 40 years, he continues to be one of the most successful and popular hair colorists in the world, remaining relevant in an ever-changing hair industry landscape.

Jack was one of the shows very first guests back in in early 2017. He was a leading name back then, but fast forward to today, it’s fair to say his industry profile has gone international on an epic proportion. You know why? Because he didn’t just think “I’ve crushed it, so what more do I need to know and do!” Oh no, not Jack! He continually upgrades his knowledge and practice new skills in not just hair, but on social media and digital. It’s this never stop learning and evolving attitude hat has seen his industry persona grow even bigger with both hairdressers and brands from all around the world.

In this episode, we discuss in detail the importance of staying relevant, along with why it really matters. He will also share his new ways of working both here in the UK and North America. And I’m inquisitive on also getting Jacks approach to mindset, which by his own admission he has to work at to help him to continue to bring his A-game to his social media , education, clients and ambassadorial roles.

We’re couldn’t be more happy to have Jack join us again on the show. He is never short of being truly motivational. Enjoy!

EP247: “NO SEX WE’RE BRITISH” with Dale Ted Watkins Jul 18, 2022
Show notes “NO SEX WE’RE BRITISH” (Weird title, I know). But let me tell you that’s the name to the recent hair collection created by one of the most iconic names from the world of mens hairdressing and barbering, Dale Ted Watkins.

A collection that explores and captures on film people who may express a combination of masculinity and femininity, or neither, in their gender expression. It plays homage to what todays very special guest Dale Ted Watkins sees as the ‘NEW MAN’.

For over 30 years Dale Ted Watkins has spent pushing forward the boundaries of men’s hairdressing in the UK. Cutting the hair of his celebrity clients, styling on fashion campaigns, music videos, magazine shoots and as an educator with Dale’s training company CITYBOY, Dale certainly knows his stuff in mens hairdressing and fashion cultures.

I invited Dale on to the show today to not only get his enigmatic story within the industry, but to also get a deeper understanding into the history of British youth culture through hair and fashion. He explains brilliantly on understanding how hair are the signals to our gang affiliations. For Dale, it’s having this depth of knowledge and curiosity that continues to push his creative boundaries forward. Something we see in his recent “NO SEX WE’RE BRITISH” and ‘Alt Skin’ collections.

As Dale says about “NO SEX WE’RE BRITISH” collection, “There was “ANOTHER” sex in town and I wanted to explore and capture this on film. The phenomena of Genderqueer or, non-binary. People who may express a combination of masculinity and femininity, or neither, in their gender expression. I wanted “NO SEX WE’RE BRITISH” to feel and reflect this “NEW” open mindedness of a young open minded society.”

This is a genuine Top of the Pod’s banger. Hit play to hear why!

EP245: Take the Fear out of a Salon Experience for Children with Autism & Additional Needs, with Craig Henderson Jul 04, 2022
Show notes People with sensory processing difficulties, a salon visit can be overwhelming. Buzzing clippers, fragranced products, the rasp of a comb – can all be a nightmare!

On todays show, I talk with Craig Henderson. He recently received the ‘Beyond Business Award’ at this years innagural Collective Pride Awards, recognised for his exceptional services in helping children with autism and additional needs become desensitised with their scary salon visit.

Collective Pride Awards recognises the unsung heroes in the hair, beauty and barbering industry who are going that extra mile to help others in a time of need, by genuinely making a difference to someone’s life. Something that todays guest, Craig Henderson, has gone above and beyond in doing.

In this episode, you are going to hear why and how Craig spends masses of patient time getting children and young adults with autism and additional needs familiarised with salon equipment.

For Craig it is all about giving complete haircut experience without the additional needs for youngsters feeling judged or discriminated against. To date he has successfully helped many children so far (to the delight of parents and professionals alike).

This is a really inspirational episode. It’s learnings are ones I hope you will all begin to practise in your own hair and barbering workplace.

    EP244: I’m Just a Barber! with Johnny BaBa Jun 27, 2022
Show notes Today Im joined on the podcast by Johnny Baba, founder and owner of the Barber Barber UK brand of shops and product range. Never afraid to share his open and honest thoughts about the industry is why I love inviting Johnny onto the show. He has been on the show a couple of times before.

If you know anything about Johnny, you’ll know he is deservedly regarded as one the best barbers in the world. You will also know that he is massively passionate and protective of the barbering industry at large. But with passion comes strong opinions. Something we get to hear today as Johnny explains his beliefs on gender neutral hair. It’s big hitting and at times, controversial!

I’m sure this conversation will evoke many emotions from you all, but regardless, it’s something Johnny truly believes in. You will hear him openly share the reasons why his Barber Barber shops refuse to cut women’s hair. Some of you may agree and some of you will disagree strongly with what he says. I’ll let you decide on this one.

Whilst we have Johnny on the show, I also had to ask about his brand new Barber Barber product range that he has launched since last spoke back in 2019. Let’s find who are these products for, what they do and why do we need another rage of products on the market.

Johnny’s podcast is prime listening waiting for your attention. I can’t wait to dive in, so let’s go to it Howtocutter’s.

EP243: How to Start a Home Salon Business with Cally Borg Jun 20, 2022
Show notes Today we’re talking how to start a Home Salon business with Cally Borg. I’ve wanted to cover this topic for sometime as the popularity of running a professional Home Salon business is going from strength to strength. Could it be for you, too?

As a successful Home Salon business owner, Cally is on a mission to positively smash the current stigma that is often attached to running a Home Salon business.

In this episode she will be sharing her journey of how she has created a successful ‘six figure’ lifestyle business working three days a week, around her family commitments, no evenings or weekends. AND, she also has half terms and the summer holidays off!

I wanted to get Cally to come on the show today to learn how she has done just this and more. Things like: what made her become a Home Salon business owner, the space realistically needed, the running costs, having staff, fitting in a business in and around her home-life. But most of all, how has she created the business model that works successfully around her lifestyle goals.

As an advocate for professionally run Home Salons, Cally gives us some honest, practical and candid insights – both pros and cons – on running a successful Home Salon business that is all shaped around having a fulfilling family life. I love that and know you’ll love it, too!

    Howtocutter’s, let’s go to it!

Well, in today’s episode he’ll be updating us on this. EP241: Dealing with the Challenges of Recruiting and Retaining Staff, with Raymond Martin May 30, 2022
Show notes How to recruit and retain staff for salon businesses is the biggest challenge that our industry faces!

I’m regularly hearing from salon owners who are saying to me, ‘It’s a crisis out there, ‘We’re having to go down the rent-a-chair model,’ and most worryingly, ‘We won’t be able to keep our salon business open for much longer!’

It’s scary stuff that potentially could see many of these salons closing soon and with it, the reduction of future hair talent coming through.

In this episode we will be addressing how to deal with the challenges of recruiting and retaining staff. To help me with this, I’m to be joined by Raymond Martin, a salon consultant with over 40 years salon ownership and training provider behind him. He now gives the tools for salons to succeed and be profitable. Today he’s here to share with us his proven recipe method to help your salon business recruit and retain staff.

Raymond owned one of the leading and salons and academies for over 4 successful decades in my hometown where I grew up and worked as a salon owner myself. I very much looked up to and admired Raymond as a respected businessman and hairdresser. He always seemed to have the knack of recruiting and retaining the very best hairdressers in our area. I’m keen to find out how he created a salon environment that hairdressers wanted to be a part of and grow with.

I believe theres a lot that we can take from past thinkings and how we can adapt them to todays changing hair industry landscape. And this certainly rings true from this conversation.
