Saga Ep.029 w/ Devin Medrano "Finding that balance" Mar 13, 2020
    Show notes

Devin Medrano assumes co-hosting duties on the podcast today and we discuss life and just where he is taking it after his 8 years of service. Devin is in his junior year here at Oklahoma State University where he is double majoring in Wildlife Ecology and Zoology. Passing on college to service and see the world, Devin used the time away from his dream of being a Wildlife Conservationist to learn just who was as a man and now as a Veteran.

After getting out, Devin set off to get his feet back under him and start focusing on getting closer to his goal of working for National Geographic. Devin spends a lot of his free time working within the Wildlife Society and serving through wildlife conservation. He even talks about heading over to war-torn countries and covering their wildlife conservation issues.

I am always grateful for the Veterans that come on, Devin opens up about his struggles and the way he got through them to get to the next level. Very interesting Veteran, don't sleep on his Saga.

Veterans Chat Ep.031 w/ Tyree Woods "Music that Heals" Mar 09, 2020
    Show notes

Tyree Woods, lead singer of Buffalo Commons, co-hosts today and what an amazing chat we had. Could have easily gone on longer, but he had a show to do in Leadville, CO to get to. Tyree has a new single that is coming out titled "Monday" and it describes a very intense day during his deployment to FOB Bostick, Afghanistan. A very revealing song and one that Tyree describes as a deep healing that has helped him to become the husband, father and human he is today. The song plays a just past the first verse during the episode, but plays to the end as a wrap up.

Through the process of healing through his music meant that he needed to be apart of a team, with like minded individuals, so he started a band named Buffalo Commons. They have an album coming out this summer, so be looking out for that. Also, if your in the CO area, they play all over the place.

Enjoy Tyree everyone, a Veteran healing and helping others heal through his music. Stay blessed and keep spreading the word about the wonderful conversations with the amazing Veterans who co-host on the show.

Saga Ep.028 w/ Mike Humphreys "Veteran is What Veteran Does" Mar 06, 2020
    Show notes

Co-Hosting today's Saga episode is Army Veteran, Mike Humphreys. Mike is no stranger to podcast visits and media, so the chat was real light. Living in Portland, OR, Mike spends a lot of time outdoors and when he isn't he is an English online tutor to Chinese students, so we got into the coronavirus of course, business is booming right now.

When he was 8-years old he was cast as "Young Forrest Gump" in the movie Forrest Gump, to one up that, he joined the Army as an Infantryman and served in 1st Armored Division and deployed to Anbar Province, Iraq. Mike has a deep tradition of military service in his family, so it made since for him to be interested in the Army.

This was the first time that Mike has openly talked about his personal feelings about serving and how it has effected him, most hosts just want to hear about Gump he said, but he opened up about how he feels and how it has effected him. He left the thought and idea of his service behind and went 11 years before reaching out to Veteran friends, he discovered that they were going through the same things he was, but had 10 years to deal with it. Mike is working through his understanding of his own mental health, but he has a great ability to express himself and how he feels. He graduated from college a year ago and went to the VA and sought counseling, opened up the years of service and is on the climb back up.

Since everyone has seen "Forrest Gump", he is planning on using that as a platform to spread Mental Health Awareness. Check out Mike's video when he talks about his experience with PTSD and its effects, very good example of talking through it. Expect to hear from Mike here again on the podcast and be on the lookout for him in upcoming movies, he's making some moves.

Everyone stay safe out there and stay blessed.

    Veterans Chat Ep.028 w/ Garrett Brown Feb 24, 2020

Garrett Brown assumes co-hosting duties today and we take the Veterans Chat a bit further than the usual 30 minutes, but its all good, great episode. Garrett talks about his first day out of the Marine Corps, his first job, which he self-admits he failed at, and coming to Oklahoma State University.

    Veterans Chat Ep.027 w/ Tom Dunn Feb 21, 2020
    Show notes

Tom Dunn assumes co-hosting duties today and we had a great chat about the use of the National Guard as a transition tool. For those that wondered the "why" behind the National Guard/Air National Guard posters on post, well it is a very easy way for an active duty member to "ease" their way into Veteran life. Tom paints a picture of a whole lotta laid back weekends and yet something that gave him much more. Having spent seven years on active duty as an Infantryman he was prepared to train others, having been deployed, he was ready to prepare them for what could be. Tom is going to come back on and chat with us about the hometown Veteran feel, something we need to get back.

A big take away for us Veterans within this episode really sits with our attitude towards finding a logical way to make a smooth transition to being a Veteran. Most have passed this time, but for those that you know who might need it, getting out or already have, then pass this on to them. If I would have gotten out after eight years I would have joined, just to help me get my boots off for good and start walking in a different pair.

Everyone stay safe and SHARE the podcast if it passes muster. Blessings.

    Veterans Chat Ep.026 w/ Ben Merrell Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

Ben Merrell, owner of Power Up Watersports, in Fort Walton Beach, FL, assumes co-hosting duties today and brings a very powerful perspective to being a Veteran business owner. Having joined a month after 9/11, Ben set off to be an Infantryman and was stationed in Hawaii. After a deployment, with the 2-35 Infantry Battalion "Cacti", Ben made the choice to get out in 2006, but he wasn't done getting after it. He started multiple businesses, succeeded and moved on or failed, but through it all he kept applying lessons learned in the Army and kept getting after it.

2012 Ben and his wife Amber started Power Up Watersports and haven't looked back. As a family operation they take great pride in treating everyone like they would want to be treated if they were on vacation. On top of that, Ben has the support of his family in tackling the Jet Blade Hydro circuit. He placed 3rd in Doha in 2013 and in 2016 won the international competition in Las Vegas. With the weather heating back up so too does the Watersport season, looking forward to another episode with Ben to talk about how it went.

Remember, if you want Ben to get some flips and trick training while your there. (850) 461-1034. Share this episode with those that are planning a trip, live in the area or just to be "that person" who shares everything, SHARE AWAY!

Everyone stay blessed and catch ya next time.

Veterans Chat Ep.025 w/ Matthew "Doc" Baumann Feb 10, 2020
    Show notes

Matthew "Doc" Baumann assumes co-hosting duties today and brings his best dish to the chat, a breakfast dish. Matt is down in Austin, TX, a place known for its amazing events, weather and some say the best chow around. Without a doubt Austin brings its A-game when it comes to food, its a melting pot for a great many cultures and the food delivers that in the taste. Matt chats about what got him into cooking and how it matured in the restaurants growing up and later into a way to make deeper connections with people. A great conversation that goes till the very end, Matt had the last words, so you know its good!

Remember, reach out if you need help. Like Matt says "Closed mouths don't get fed", keep yourself open for someone to help. You may not think you need it, but its in our nature to want to be helped. Everyone stay safe out there and as always, many blessings.

    Saga Ep.027 w/ Ryan Wempe Feb 07, 2020
    Show notes

Ryan Wempe assumes co-hosting duties today for another great Saga Episode. Ryan grew up in a military family, one Great Grandfather in WWI, two Grandfathers in WWII/Korea, his Father w/ 30+ years, both of his older Sisters, his younger Brother and his Wife! That is stacking the service department. Holding all of this together was Ryan’s Mom, Diane, who guided the family together through the good times and held them together during the hard ones. Ryan talks about the influence that this rich military service tradition had on him and where it lead him through life.

As a West Point graduate, Ryan was in his first year when 9/11 happen, just miles away from the Academy proper. He talks about the impact of that, staying on and hearing the names of past grads who were killed in combat. He describes an environment that was not only educating tomorrow military leaders, but doing it at a time of war. Very powerful and hope I asked the right questions.

Ryan dug his bones in East Bagdad during he surge, the Push River Valley and Kandahar while in. A career that spanned 10 years gave Ryan an insight into himself and opens that to the Veterans out there that could gain from this knowledge. It is there for you if you need it. Thank you, Ryan.

Key take-aways here are to think of your mental health as you would when you hear of a sports star talking with their psychologist before a race, game or bout. As a Veteran there are key components to our lives that require this same level of self care. “Know yourself and seek self-improvement”. Ryan brings a stoic virtue into the chat when he says “control your environment”, be present for the things that you can influence. Knowing that parts of your life that are uncontrollable are just that, Uncontrollable. Last very good point and one I am going to be leaning hard on going forward, find a Veteran and get on his or her’s plan. The old saying “What to be successful, follow someone who is successful” rings true in so many things we do.

Everyone stay safe out there and share the episode and podcast with those you chat with. If we can fix it, make it worth you sharing, then let us know. Many blessings and stay safe.
