    MARK RUSSELL - CHECKMATE Feb 02, 2021
    Show notes

The officially unsolved murder of Julia Wallace in Liverpool on 20th January 1931 is one of the classic cases of British true crime. The day before the murder a telephone message was left at the Liverpool Central Chess Club for William Wallace (who was a member). It involved an appointment with a possible business client for Wallace (who was an insurance collector) and instructed him to call at the address 25 Menlove Gardens East the following evening at 7.30 pm. The message was conveyed to Wallace who arrived at the club about 25 minutes later. The following evening Wallace took three trams (streetcars) to the Menlove Gardens area to find that there was a Menlove Gardens North, South and West but no East. He returned home to find his 69-year-old wife Julia brutally murdered in the front parlour of their home in Wolverton Street.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Mark Russell is a local historian and researcher. Since viewing the Yorkshire TV docu-drama Who Killed Julia Wallace? in 1975 he has had a great interest in the case. His interests include music, films, history and true crime. He lives in Liverpool.

GARY SOSNIECKI - POTATO MASHER MURDER Jan 29, 2021
    Show notes

Albin Ludwig was furious. He had caught his wife, Cecilia, with other men before; now, after secretly following Cecilia one evening in 1906, Albin was overcome with suspicion. Albin and Cecilia quarreled that night and again the next day. Prosecutors later claimed that the final quarrel ended when Albin knocked Cecilia unconscious with a wooden potato masher, doused her with a flammable liquid, lit her on fire, and left her to burn to death. Albin claimed self-defense, but he was convicted of second-degree murder.

Newspaper coverage of the dramatic crime and trial was jarringly explicit and detailed, shocking readers in Indiana, where the crime occurred. Peter Young of the South Bend Times wrote that the murder’s “horrors and its shocking features . . . have never before been witnessed in Mishawaka.” The story was front-page news throughout northern Indiana for much of a year.

For several generations, the families of both Cecilia and Albin would be silent about the crime—until Cecilia’s great-grandson, award-winning journalist Gary Sosniecki, uncovered the family’s dark secret. As he discovered, wife beating was commonplace in the early 20th century (before the gender-neutral term of “domestic violence” was adopted), and “wife murder” was so common that newspapers described virtually every case by that term. At long last, The Potato Masher Murder: Death at the Hands of a Jealous Husband unearths the full story of two immigrant families united by love and torn apart by domestic violence.

    A.J. JAMESON - PRUNING A PSYCHOPATH Jan 28, 2021
    Show notes

Haymond Gunning is a shifter of minds — a seasoned neurological guide leading a group of scientists through the mindscape of a psychopath. Their mission: eliminate the Darkness that’s spreading. But as the team carves a path through the patient’s prefrontal cortex, Haymond gets the notion this expedition is nothing like the others. Shadows emerge bearing cryptic messages, mutated beasts prowl just beyond the camp’s perimeter, and impossible weather conditions complicate their travels.

But nothing is random. Controlling it all is a singular entity, enigmatic and vile, whose sole intention is to repel the team from its dominion. If the experiment fails, the Institute risks dissolution. But luckily, Haymond has never failed to complete an expedition, and he’d do anything to keep his record pristine.

As lies and manipulation twist the team’s understanding of reality, paranoia sets in, and their scrutiny turns inward. Can they maintain their current course and complete the experiment, or will they succumb to the very infection they’ve been sent to destroy?

    STEPHEN SACCHI - SAVAGE Jan 21, 2021
    Show notes

SAVAGE, A Journey through the Opioid Epidemic is a wild, wild ride of how one gifted young person, from a good home, got caught up in the drinking and drugging of our time, only to lose friends, to come near death himself, lose his education and shot at careers, a girl he loved, his family's hopes and respect, and then to lose faith that he could ever recover. At times funny, this book is a harrowing ordeal of how drugs and their allure will not let you go until it causes major havoc.

Sacchi finally gets straight "sick and tired," as the expression goes, of the pain of not being who he really is, he stays straight. Full of compassion for those who stand by him, for friends who die from it, SAVAGE tells us more of what this addiction does than any statistic. Read it and weep and learn and bless all those who make it. Also enjoy Saachi's wit and eagle eye for all the antics he had to go through just to survive.

PAUL LAFFERTY - DOWN THE LANE Jan 19, 2021
    Show notes

Down the Lane takes the reader on an eye-opening look at the parts of Niagara Falls they don't tell you about in the tourist brochures. Follow Doc -- a strip club manager with dreams of getting out of the game -- as he gets involved with forces beyond his control. While biker gangs and old Mafia chieftains fight to control the city's underworld, Doc gets swept up in the violence and threats, and does everything he can to stay alive and out of prison.

"Paul Lafferty has done an extraordinary job with his first novel. As he guides the reader through the world of how organized crime actually works in Southern Ontario, he paints a vivid, shocking and always painstakingly accurate picture. His voice is steady and solid, his characters diverse and complex, and the story is full of surprises. Down the Lane is a must-read for crime-fiction fans."
