this podcast is produced by AsianBossGirl.

ever since the beloved ABG hosts Melody, Helen, and Janet took their hiatus, we decided there was a space to fill where individuals could continue vulnerable conversations about life, love, and friendship. we value digging deep, being unhinged, and stepping out courageously in topics of conversation that may be more taboo than your typical lunch conversation. join us as we continue the AsianBossGirl legacy with a podcast of our own. we desire to model friendship and vulnerability to our listeners while challenging ourselves to grow in self confidence, friendship, and authenticity.

buckle up! it’s gonna be a wild ride.

    Episode 69: My Vag Jun 25, 2020
    Show notes

This episode is dedicated to the wonderous, sensual, powerful, confusing, beautiful, sometimes hairy topic of… our Vajayjays! We indirectly touched upon our vaginas on Episode 24: Periods & Poop. And seeing that May was Women’s Health Month, we were reminded that it was about time we dedicate another episode to a very active part of our bodies. Listen in as we discuss everything from anatomy to personal first experiences, to what our vaginas would be if they each had a monologue.
Thank you to listeners Sabrina L. and Yoni C., for writing in and sharing helpful women's health information ;)

    Episode 68: Coming Out Part 2 Jun 18, 2020
    Show notes

"Coming out is a journey."- Justin R

"Coming out never ends."- Anna Lee

Sending you all love for Pride Month! In Episode 66, we were joined by our close friends, Anna and Justin. Anna shared her complex experience of confronting her sexuality and identity as someone who grew up in a deeply religious family, and Justin shared his fears, reservations, and feeling of freedom from finally addressing his sexuality and identity as a public figure for the first time. Today, the conversation continues in part 2. We dive deeper into their journies in owning the identities of queer and gay, navigating family relations, coming out (again) at work, dating, and learning how to become more involved in the queer community.

Take a listen & leave a 🌈 if you resonated with today's episode.

Episode 67: Black Lives Matter & Allyship Jun 11, 2020
    Show notes

This past week, you may have noticed that we held back our regularly scheduled content to focus on the Black Lives Matter movement. To us, nothing is more important than life itself, and when our black and brown brothers and sisters have lost too many of their lives to the injustices built into America’s systems, we need to pause and reflect on how we, as Asian Americans, can do our part to help.

We are outraged at the death of George Floyd, Breona Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more unarmed black people whose names are not currently in the news. We are outraged at the persistence of police brutality, at the treatment of protestors, at white privilege, at systemic racism, and at our president. We are donating, e-mailing representatives, using our voice amongst our spheres of influence, and encouraging the people we know to do the same. So we hope that with this episode, we can continue to discuss, listen and learn from one another.

Comment below with stories of the conversations that you're having with your loved ones. What was the most difficult part of the conversation? What would be helpful to hear from another ABG in the community? Share with us also any resources that you've found helpful to you.

*We will be donating a portion of the ad revenue generated from this episode to various organizations supporting the Black Lives Matter movement.

Episode 66: Coming Out with Anna Lee and Justin Rodjanapanyakul May 28, 2020
    Show notes

This episode comes at the cusp of May and June - one month celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage, and the other, LGBTQI with Pride month. Identity plays such a big role in a person’s life, and there are so many facets to it. In this episode, we explore sexual orientation, specifically, homosexuality, and the nuances of what that means when you’re Asian American. Our two guests are very good friends of ours and after having many of these types of conversations offline, we are so happy to offer our platform for them to share their stories.

Anna Lee is a very close friend of Mel's who resides in San Francisco where she works at Facebook as a Business Lead for Entertainment. Anna goes by the pronouns of she/her and identifies as queer. Justin Rodjanapanyakul is a close friend of all 3 of ours (you might recognize him in some of our Instagram posts where he has graciously offered his photography skills). Justin is based in the Los Angeles area where he is a musician and YouTuber, known as one half of the duo, JRodTwins. Justin goes by the pronouns he/his and his sexual orientation is gay.

If you resonated with today's guests, leave a <3 emoji in the comments!

[BONUS]: From the Covid Frontlines with Nurse Michelle Acob May 26, 2020
    Show notes

This Hero Story is brought to you by McDonald's. With all that is happening with the pandemic, McDonald's is putting forward the effort to showcase the many kinds of heroes in the Asian Pacific American community. McDonald's desire to uplift and highlight community heroes is guided by the belief that we are all in this together, and they are committed to caring for local heroes who are caring for our country.

COVID19 has profoundly impacted the world. We’ve all had to adjust to a new normal, and that new normal has looked different for everyone. In recent episodes, we shared how COVID19 has impacted our personal lives, and our experiences have reflected that of many individuals who are adjusting to the stay-at-home order.

In this bonus episode, we want to recognize and honor a local community hero who is working directly on the frontlines. Today, we have Michelle Acob, a bedside and charge nurse at the Regional Medical Center of San Jose - a trauma hospital. Michelle works in one of Santa Clara County’s first Covid-19 units starting in March 2020. As a charge and infection prevention nurse, she oversees the entire Covid-19 unit and is in control of bedding patients and guiding 10-12 nurses with their assigned patient loads.

We are so honored to have Michelle here to share her story and experiences during this unprecedented period of our lives.

Episode 64: My Asian American Identity May 14, 2020
    Show notes

Last episode, we kicked off APAHM 2020 with a conversation about our experiences growing up in an Asian household. In this episode, we continue the conversation, reflecting more on our interactions with friends, our communities, and experiences in grade school and throughout college - we chat about many of the nuanced aspects of growing up ethnically Asian in America. Did we ever feel ashamed of our identities? What are we most proud of about our culture? How have these experiences impacted our current identities? Listen to find out!

Episode 63: APAHM - Growing Up In An Asian Household May 08, 2020
    Show notes

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, APAHM for short! During this month, we celebrate the cultures, traditions, and history of AAPI’s in the United States. This country is very much shaped by the stories of immigrants from Asia and the Pacific and the native people of the Pacific Islands. Today, we will be sharing with you our personal stories as Asian American women -- the traditions and foods we remember from our childhood, where we grew up, what it was like to visit "the motherland", and how these experiences have impacted our journey with shaping our own cultural identity. Happy APAHM everyone!

Episode 62: Loneliness, Connection, and Online Dating May 01, 2020
    Show notes

ABG is officially in season 6! With the stay-at-home order still in place, we continue to record from each of our own homes. By now, we are a little more settled into this new, temporary normal of social distancing, but it can be challenging to cope with the inevitable loneliness. In collaboration with Bumble, this episode is dedicated to ways we are dealing with loneliness and how we are connecting with others through online apps.

We discuss profile creation and evaluation tactics (we talk about wanting a horoscope filter, which you can actually find in the settings on your Bumble app!); how to start a conversation; and for those listeners like Helen who aren't on the search for a Boo anymore, our experiences with Bumble BFF (there's an option to hide date mode for users who are looking to make friends/network). We also appreciate that Bumble's priority is safety, and creating an inclusive/safe environment for it's users to make connections.

Listen in as we discuss our personal experiences, and share your own tips and/or experiences in the comments below!

Episode 61: Therapy and Mental Health with Haesue Jo (MA, LMFT) Apr 24, 2020
    Show notes

Mental health is a topic that we get many messages about from our listeners. It’s a sensitive and complicated topic, and especially with all the recent world events that have occurred, we thought now is the right time to take a deeper dive into this topic. Back in July 2019, we released Episode 44: Mental Health with Christine Chen wherein our good friend shared her personal experience with clinical depression.

Today, we wanted to offer a different perspective on the topic by bringing in Haesue Jo, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist based in the Bay Area, California. Haesue has 7 years of experience as a mental health professional, including working with Asian-American youth, families, and adults, given her firsthand experience dealing with generational and cultural differences in her own family. Haesue is also the Clinical Support Lead at BetterHelp, the largest online counseling platform worldwide. You can learn more about Haesue at betterhelp.com/haesue-jo. AsianBossGirl is partnering with BetterHelp to offer our listeners a discount on their services - if you are curious, sign up through the link below.
