Interview: Professor Harry M. Benshoff, Author of Monsters in the Closet Dec 10, 2021

Show notes

In this special Frightgown exclusive from June 2021, Joe interviews the godfather of queer horror, Professor Harry M. Benshoff, about his definitive text, Monsters in the Closet, as well as why queer horror has exploded in recent years, iconic films from each decade and his favorite under the radar queer horror text (hint: it's an early pre-cursor to Saw?!)

FYI: The interview was done on Zoom so the audio isn't great. If you want to see the video, hit up our YouTube channel.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) Dec 08, 2021

Show notes

Pack your parka and fine-tune your hacker skills because we're heading to Sweden to discuss David Fincher's 2011 adaptation of Stieg Larsson's global phenomenon of a novel: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo!

Join us as we offer all the praise to Rooney Mara, who really had the deck stacked against her when it came to taking on the role of Lisbeth Salander (she's great in this film) before diving into the complicated mystery at the center of the film and question Daniel Craig's penchant for queer-coded torture scenes.

Plus, Joe's hilarious theater-going anecdotes, a James Bond-ish opening credits sequence, Trace's complete and total lack of awareness of NIN (and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and two very candid (and unedited!) conversations about rape revenge.

Show notes

We're back with another minisode on Don Mancini's new series, Chucky (2021)! In our spoiler-filled discussion of the eighth episode (aka the season finale), we discuss Kyle's final scene and Jake's retribution, but lament Tiffany's franchise arc before giving a final grade to the season. See y'all next year for season 2!

Fear No Evil (1981) feat. Movie Oubliette Dec 01, 2021

Show notes

Dress in your best antichrist drag because we’re talking about the absolutely wild (and frequently nonsensical) Fear No Evil (1981). Along for the ride are Dan and Conrad from Movie Oubliette, making this a truly international podcast experience across four countries and three continents. C/W: the dog dies.

Up for debate: is this film homophobic or is it a condemnation of the damaging effects of religion? Is it a Christmas or an Easter movie? Is director Frank LaLoggia using the film to work out some personal issues? And can we find something nice to say about Kathleen Rowe McAllen’s bee stung lips and atrocious acting?

Plus: bloody baptisms, satin Grease jackets, gun vaginas, death by dodgeball, animal cruelty, Gynecomastia and Dendrophilia, and many, MANY male asses, including one Trace deems so perfect, you could hold a tea party on it.

Oh, and we end things with a quick round of Mooblie Awards!

The Seventh Victim (1943) feat. David Demchuk Nov 24, 2021

Show notes

Stay away from the wine because we, along with celebrated queer author David Demchuk, are covering our first Val Lewton film:The Seventh Victim (1943).

The HEAVILY queer coded text is a nice alternative to our Universal Monster films, though we recommend having a comedy for when you finish because this movie is grim and nihilistic! Also, should we become Satanists? Because the Palladists don't seem that bad!

Up for discussion: disdain for the male characters, Lewton's classic "cat jump" sequence, and Frances' emotional outburst as confirmation of a lesbian relationship.

Plus: Joe gushes over Jean Brooks' performance, Trace cannot remember the poet's name, and David questions Redi's decision to put the logo of her secret society on a perfume bottle.

Chucky S01E06: 'Cape Queer' Nov 19, 2021

Show notes

We're back with another minisode on Don Mancini's new series, Chucky (2021)! In our spoiler-filled discussion of the sixth episode, we discuss the return of Andy (Alex Vincent) and Kyle (Christine Elise), more Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) and Nica (Fiona Dourif) shenanigans and those two deaths!

Heads up: we recorded this before it was announced Fiona Dourif was playing Charles Lee Ray in flashbacks

Creep (2014) feat. Devin Baldwin Nov 17, 2021

Show notes

Pull out your best Peachfuzz-wear because we're talking about lots of awkward situations in Patrick Brice's Creep (2014)! Joining us for the conversation is Devin Baldwin, co-host of the Kill the Dead Podcast!

Come along for the ride as we discuss the gay panic that the film has the potential to induce (just depends on how gay panicky you are as a viewer!) while comparing our respective sets of social skills to see who would be out of the house first.

Plus: mumblecore, social awkwardness, the thunk of an axe meeting a skull, a bestiality misunderstanding and one really creepy story from Trace.
