Dahmer (2002) Jun 21, 2022

Show notes

In this special bonus minisode celebrating the film's 20th anniversary, we discuss 2002's Dahmer, starring a pre-fame Jeremy Renner. The film - and Renner - is quite good and would make a good double bill with My Friend Dahmer (another film we'd recommend).

Micro Queers: I Love Your Guts (2021) Jun 17, 2022

Show notes

This month on Micro Queers, we're working the late shift at the fast food joint with David Jancove's I Love Your Guts (2021). We're talking great female friendships, violence vs gore, comparisons to Buffy's 'Doublemeat Palace' episode, and why we don't want to see a feature version of this short.

Def By Temptation (1990) feat. Zena Dixon Jun 15, 2022

Show notes

Warm up Fistina and Palmette because we're heading to NYC circa 1990 to discuss the sinister succubus at the center of James Bond III's Troma classic Def By Temptation! Joining us for the conversation is DBT superfan (and Bloody Disgusting Podcast co-host) Zena Dixon!

Join us as we give a bit of a Troma primer (it's our first Troma film!) before jumping into the film's treatment of its queer character, as well as a discussion of the dreaded AIDS Mary urban legend. Oh, and all the praise for Kadeem Hardison's K.

Plus, debating Joel's effectiveness as a protagonist, Samuel L. Jackson(!), stockings vs. tights and the ultimate question: would you jump in them drawers?

Scooby-Doo (2002) feat. Gory Cory Jun 08, 2022

Show notes

We hope you've got the scrote for this job because we're heading to Spooky Island to solve the mystery of the zombified co-eds in Raja Gosnell's 2002 live-action adaptation of Scooby-Doo! Joining us for the conversation is noted Scooby-head Cory McCullough!

Join us as we trace the film's journey from a PG-13 (or R-rated???) Brady Bunch Movie-style parody of the classic Scooby-Doo cartoons to a compromised but joyous, family-friendly(???) celebration of all things Mystery, Inc. We wouldn't expect anything else from screenwriter (and Troma alum) James Gunn, would we?

Plus, on top of a feminist Daphne, a stoner Shaggy and a queer Velma & Fred, we've got Pamela Anderson(???), "horrific" CGI, body (and gender)-swapping shenanigans, plenty o' farts and the ultimate debate on Scrappy Cornelius Doo. Oh, and who can forget that absolute banger of a soundtrack?

Spoiler-Free Review: Carter Smith's 'Swallowed' [Overlook 2022] Jun 04, 2022

Show notes

We're dropping a mini-review of Carter Smith's new queer horror film Swallowed, which just had its world-premiere at the Overlook Film Festival! Since the film is still seeking distribution and thus can't be seen by most audiences, this a completely spoiler-free review. We will release a longer (spoiler-filled) episode on the film when it gets released.

Starring Jena Malone (The Ruins, The Neon Demon) and Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge), Swallowed is a pulse-pounding tale of two best friends on what might be their final night together. A drug deal gone wrong finds them at the center of a chilling queer body horror full of shocking violations.

Perdita Durango (1997) feat. Kay Lynch Jun 01, 2022

Show notes

Make sure those human fetuses are refrigerated properly because we're hitting the road with Rosie (fucking) Perez and Javier Bardem in Álex de la Iglesia's controversial film Perdita Durango (1997), which only just saw the release of its uncut version last year! Joining us for the trip is Salem Horror Fest's Festival Director Kay Lynch!

Join us as we look at the film's origins as a sequel to Wild at Heart (yes, really) before discussing the films taboo and challenging subject matter. Rosie Perez's career-best performance forces us to rationalize loving a character who commits so many heinous acts.

Oh, and content warnings aplenty for this one because we've got filicide, f-slurs, voodoo rituals, copious amounts of cocaine, blood sacrifices, corpse mutilations, grave desecrations and, in the words of the director himself, consensual rape??? And that's all just in the film's first hour!

Incident in a Ghostland (2018) feat. Xero Gravity May 25, 2022

Show notes

This week we're covering our second Pascal Laugier film, 2018's Incident in a Ghostland. C/W: misogyny, transphobia.

Along for the ride is Blerdy Massacre co-host Xero Gravity, who joins us in getting increasingly aggravated with the Martyrs director the more we learn what he thinks he's doing with this film, which includes a lot of teen female abuse, a caricature trans woman villain and unabashed love for HP Lovecraft?!

We're more forgiving of the twist, as well as the performances of Emilia Jones and Taylor Hickson (whose disfigurement on the film's set is another controversy Trace unpacks).

Plus: TCM-meets-giallo production design, a sly police subversion, a groan-worthy typewriter and dolls everywhere.
