The Perfection (2019) feat. Mae Shults Jan 04, 2023

Show notes

Don't adjust your feed: we're redoing Richard Shepard's twisty 2019 secret rape/revenge film, which drew criticism when we covered it in our first year.

Joining us is musician and Halloweenies editor Mae Shults for a discussion that veers between heavy, confessional and dumb. We're talking real life sexual assault, pooping our pants and guessing the pop culture moment the film's wig reveal is referencing.

Plus: debating the responsibility of art (and other criticisms from reviews), praising the performances, and questioning the catharsis of the ending

Into the Dark: "Midnight Kiss" (2019) Dec 28, 2022

Show notes

Surprise! We're celebrating New Year's by unlocking the Patreon vault and releasing our 2019 episode on the gayest slasher film ever made: Hulu's Into the Dark entry "Midnight Kiss" (yes, it's even gayer than Hellbent).

Directed by former Horror Queers guest Carter Smith (see our episode on The People Under the Stairs) and written by queer screenwriter Erlingur Thoroddsen (Rift), "Midnight Kiss" follows a group of gay friends and their "fruit fly" as they are stalked by a mysterious killer wearing a pup mask!

Up for discussion is, well, a lot. We're talking condoms, PrEP, gay stereotypes, Grindr, cocaine, molly, gay sex positions and so much more! So grab the nearest bottle of poppers and join us for this wild ride!

The Human Santapede feat. Scarred for Life & Brother Ghoulish Dec 23, 2022

Show notes

We're celebrating the holidays with a dramatic reading of selected excerpts of Adam Millard's 2014 ebook The Human Santapede, which is pretty much exactly what you expect. Featuring the vocal talents of Terry Mesnard and Mary Beth McAndrews of Scarred for Life and Ryan Kinney of Brother Ghoulish's Tomb, strap in for an offensive romp as Krampus tries to destroy Christmas and his nemesis, Santa, by constructing an (In)Human Santapede. Plus: Enjoy the flubs and fuck ups!

Big thanks (?) to HQ Book Club member Juha for bringing this to our attention.

The Last of Sheila (1973) feat. Michael Varrati Dec 21, 2022

Show notes

Give us a glass of water and a couple of lesbians because we're joining two iconic queens Anthony Perkins (yes, that one) and Stephen Sondheim (yes, that one) for an evening of games, bitchery and murder in 1973's The Last of Sheila! Joining us for the conversation is the co-host of the Midnight Mass Podcast: Michael Varrati!

We go all in on this complex murder mystery/Hollywood satire filled with a cast of pretty reprehensible characters (in the words of our guest: it's a problematic scenario populated by problematic people) while admiring the sheer audacity of Perkins and Sondheim's clever script.

Plus: hot Ian McShane, Angela Lansbury tea, Raquel Felch, a "little child molester" who technically wins the movie, and a surprising fact about Joel Schumacher!
