Splinter (2008) Mar 22, 2023

Show notes

Ready for an original creature feature with practical effects and surprisingly great character work? Allow us to introduce you to (maybe queer?) director Toby Wilkins' Splinter (2008).

We're big fans of this film, which boasts charismatic performances from its central trio, great creature work and smart use of its mostly single gas station location.

Plus: camping talk, the rom com cut, music video editing, and zombie walks.

Wild Things (1998) feat. The People Under the Scares Mar 15, 2023

Show notes

Get ready for an episode filled with overshares because we're talking the hot & steamy sexual politics of John McNaughton's 1998 classic Wild Things! Joining us for the conversation are the hosts of the People Under the Scares podcast: Bobby Torrez and Mike Brown!

Put your thinking caps on as we try to pick apart this tangled web of a(n admittedly entertaining) plot while lamenting the exclusion of a key queer relationship and the inclusion of Neve Campbell's climactic wig. Oh yeah, and Kevin Bacon's iconic full frontal nude scene.

Plus: false rape accusations, prosthetic pussy, penis casts, cum vs. come and a deleted scene that completely changes the way you view the film (hint: it involves incest!).

The Haunting (1963) feat. Robyn Adams Mar 01, 2023

Show notes

Lock the bedroom door and be mindful of whose hand you're holding because we're headed to Hill House with Robert Wise's 1963 adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting. Along for the ride is Robyn Adams, who is a huge fan of the material and brings with her vital knowledge of the book.

Up for debate: how predatory is lesbian Theo? Is Nell queer-coded? And is her relationship to Dr. Markway an attempt to throw off censors?

Plus: loving Mrs. Dudley, Joe's silver lining read of the sad ending, Trace's appreciation of rococo styling, and pushing back against complaints that the audience doesn't see anything
