Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) feat. The Boulet Bros. Jul 05, 2023

Show notes

Don't be a miserable, ungrateful bitch because we're discussing James Wan's 2013 film Insidious: Chapter 2 in preparation for Patrick Wilson's upcoming sequel Insidious: The Red Door! Tagging in for the conversation are the hosts of Shudder's most watched series The Boulet Brothers' Dragula: Dracmorda and Swanthula Boulet!

Join us as we try to figure out why a horror film released in 2013 would repurpose the plot of Sleepaway Camp for a modern audience, while appreciating the camp factor of this fascinatingly wacky sequel. What makes sense? What doesn't? We try really hard to figure it out!

Plus: a dub job for the ages, baby stunts, cheating lesbian mamas, true San Francisco realness and some of the best embalming techniques you're likely to find in a horror film. It's gonna be a cisgustingly good time!

Micro Queers: Bad Girl Boogey (2022) Jul 04, 2023

Show notes

We're back with a fresh Micro Queers on Australian trans teen filmmaker Alice Maio Mackay's queer slasher film, Bad Girl Boogey (2022).

We would have liked more time with these characters (and maybe a longer runtime overall), as well as a stronger killer reveal, but the film's musicality, its DIY aesthetic, and the fact that Mackay has made an unapologetically queer film is worth celebrating.

The Hitcher (1986) Jun 28, 2023

Show notes

Our mothers told us never to do this but we just couldn't resist so we're having an in-depth discussion of Robert Harmon's 1986 classic The Hitcher. Join us as we discuss the gay panic of it all in this queer-coded cautionary tale. From Rutger Hauer's predatory queer to C. Thomas Howell's virginal twink, The Hitcher has it all!

Plus: the film's origins as a 190-page(???) script, lots and lots of saliva play, ferryman/fairy man and getting your car all kinds of wet.

Bad Hair (2020) feat. Carolyn Mauricette Jun 21, 2023

Show notes

Don't wig out, but prepare for a whiter-- *ahem* WIDER audience, because we're discussing Justin Simien's horror comedy Bad Hair (2020)! Weaving her way into this discussion is Fantasia International Film Festival programmer and horror journalist Carolyn Mauricette!

Join us as we try to figure out the many, many things this film is trying to do, praising the intent behind most of the creative decisions while lamenting the confused execution. Is it self-aware camp? Is it self-serious horror? Is it wasting Vanessa Williams? ....Yes?

Micro Queers: Jagged Mind (2023) Jun 15, 2023

Show notes

Micro Queers is back with a spoiler-filled dive into director Kelly Kali's Jagged Mind (2023), the Hulu feature adaptation of screenwriter Allyson Morgan's Bite Sized Halloween short First Date.

We're big fans of lead actors Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Shannon Woodward, who are imminently watchable in this time loop relationship thriller, though the narrative is a touch repetitive and we have questions about how the magic works.

Still: queer horror where the representation just is? It's a Pride miracle.

Hereditary (2018) feat. Girl, That's Scary Jun 14, 2023

Show notes

Avoid triangles and watch your head because we're talking Ari Aster's Hereditary (2018) aka the film that we named our horror awards after!

We're joined by mega fans Jazz and Kat from Girl, That's Scary, who love the film, but wonder if Aster is ok?

It's all about Toni Collette's "bad mom", but also shout-outs to Alex Wolff and Ann Dowd.

Plus: a trans reading of Paimon, Dante's Inferno, secret clues, skittering and turkey noises, and the perils of making deals with the 8th King of Hell

Jurassic Park (1993) Jun 07, 2023

Show notes

Flock this way because we've spared no expense as we continue our dinosaur double bill with a gendered analysis of Steven Spielberg's 1993 classic Jurassic Park! Join us as we explore the "intense science-fiction terror" (thanks, MPA) of a land in which dinosaurs are capable of changing their biological sex!

Plus: a look at the revolutionary effects in the film, lots of Marvel talk, Deep Blue Sea comparisons and some horrible attempts at imitating the velociraptor calls.
