Inside (2007) Dec 13, 2023

Show notes

Watch the road and finish your knitting project because we're delving back into the world of New French Extremity with a festive look at Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo's 2007 home invasion film Inside.

Join us as we laud lead actresses Béatrice Dalle and Alysson Paradis for their visceral performances before putting the film's narrative into the context of the 2005 French riots that serve as the background setting of the film.

Plus: a very emotive CGI fetus, the deadliest scissors you'll ever see, and some very incompetent law enforcement officers.

Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key (1973) feat. Shelagh Rowan-Legg Dec 06, 2023

Show notes

It's Giallo time so we, along with film critic Shelagh Rowan-Legg, are headed to Italy for Sergio Martino's Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key (1972). C/W: sexual assault, incest, racism, and the cat dies.

Shelagh offers plenty of political and cultural knowledge of women's issues from the period, while Trace refreshes our memory of Edgar Allan Poe's source material, The Black Cat.

Plus: tender queer sex, multiple killers, sheep eyeballs, costume dresses, and a fiery finish

The Mothman Prophecies (2002) feat. Ari Drew Nov 29, 2023

Show notes

Hide your ChapStick and get off the damn bridge because we're heading into the world of high strangeness with a look at Mark Pellington's 2002 chiller The Mothman Prophecies (2002). Tagging in for the conversation is returning guest (and Trace's better half) Ari Drew!

Join us as we offer a brief primer on cryptids and why us queers often feel a special connection to them, before going all in on this stealth Christmas horror film. It's a more philosophical episode than usual, but that makes for some fascinating conversations.

Plus: diving into the true story the film is based on, Mothman's cakes (the butt kind), Richard Gere's magical 2002, creepy phone calls from Indrid Cold and one great hidden scare.

Hard Candy (2005) Nov 22, 2023

Show notes

We're wrapping up our look at Toxic Masculinity with David Slade's feature directorial debut, Hard Candy (2005).

This secret rape/revenge film features powerhouse performances from Elliot Page and Patrick Wilson and plenty of uncomfortable moments.

Plus: comparisons to Promising Young Woman (and Saw X?!), a frank discussion of pedophilia, plenty of strategic framing, and the prequel we want to see.

Murder By Numbers (2002) feat. Kill By Kill Nov 15, 2023

Show notes

Let's derange the world because the profile doesn't fit the profile, which means that we're covering Barbet Schroeder's 2002 film Murder By Numbers. Tagging in for this lively conversation are Patrick and Gena of the Kill By Kill podcast.

Join us as we go all in on this "thriller" that's filled to the brim with queer overtones (courtesy of a baby Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt), while trying to figure out which of the two main storylines is the more interesting one. Bullock is innocent, though!

Plus: one very random baboon attack, absinthe etiquette, Claire Redfield's jacket, showy psychos, curtain bangs and a mind-bogglingly huge $50 million budget.
