The Flagship: Weighing in on Texas hoops, spring football with Austin radio personality Mike Hardge Mar 15, 2021
    Show notes

This week, on the interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to Longhorn observationalist and body language-ologist Mike Hardge, who used to be Chip Brown's co-host on AM 1300 The Zone's morning show "The Bottom Line" (until they disappeared from the air last November, following a nationwide layoff by iHeart Radio).

Hardge, a 13-year pro baseball player and second-round pick of the Montreal Expos in 1990, talks about Texas football, basketball and baseball in a lively discussion you won't want to miss.

Hardge talks about the surprise he experienced when he first heard Steve Sarkisian was named as Tom Herman's replacement and how Sark has helped win Hardge over.

We talk about what Hardge is most looking forward to when spring football starts on March 23 (with the spring game on April 24), including the one player on offense and the one player on defense Hardge is most excited to see.

Also, we talk to Hardge about "reasonable expectations" for Texas football under Sark in Year 1 - if such a thing as reasonable expectations exist in Longhorn Nation!!

Hardge is a former AAU basketball coach who coached Royce O'Neale of the Utah Jazz back in the day, so we get Hardge's thoughts on how far the Longhorns have to go in March for Hardge to feel good about Shaka Smart returning as coach.

You won't want to miss that discussion.

Of course, we had to get Hardge's thoughts on Texas baseball - specifically what impresses Hardge about David Pierce's team as well as Hardge's concerns.

Catch all of that and much more on this week’s interview edition of The Flagship Podcast.

The Flagship: What to watch in spring football, will NCAA tourney win save Shaka Smart? Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 managing editor Taylor Estes and columnist Chip Brown weigh in on their positions of focus for Texas as the Longhorns make their way towards spring football under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian.

The hosts also discuss the upcoming Texas Pro Day, which will look much different in 2021 than in years past, before shifting focus to basketball as the Longhorns men's and women's teams prepare for the upcoming Phillip 66 Big 12 Championships leading up to March Madness.

Prior to a quick break, Chip and Taylor wrap up the first portion of the show with some baseball talk after right-handed pitcher Ty Madden put up a 14-strikeout, complete game shutout performance in the Longhorns' 1-0 win over Houston last weekend.

The Flagship then returns with a football-heavy edition of Love it or Leave it, with this week's topics focused on the positions Chip and Taylor are most excited to see in fall camp, their position groups concern and where the QB position falls in line, plus how the NCAA Tournament could impact Shaka Smart's future at Texas.

Catch all of that and much more on this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast.

Longhorn Blitz: Spring practice preview of the Texas defensive front Mar 10, 2021
    Show notes

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are back to continue previewing spring practice on the Forty Acres. After last week's overview of the secondary, this week's episode of Longhorn Blitz examines the defensive front. Pete Kwiatkowski's first season as the program's defensive coordinator has him trying to account for the loss of Joseph Ossai, but inheriting Alfred Collins and DeMarvion Overshown is a heck of a place to start building the front of his 2-4-5 scheme.

The Flagship: Lifetime Longhorn Kenneth Sims talks Texas, College Football Hall of Fame induction Mar 08, 2021
    Show notes

In this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to Texas' first Lombardi Award winner and member of the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame induction class - the one and only Kenneth Sims.

Sims, who still holds the Texas career record for forced fumbles with 15, was a terror on the UT defensive line from 1978-81, winning the 1981 Lombardi Award, as the nation's top college down lineman, before going on to become the No. 1 overall selection in the 1982 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots.

Sims was also the recipient of the NCAA's prestigious Top V Award (now the Top 10 Award), given to the top scholar-athletes in college athletics in all sports (along with Oliver Luck) in 1982.

We talk to Sims about growing up in Kosse, Texas, and his high school football days playing for the Groesbeck Goats (which included the 6-foot-5, 271-pound Sims kicking field goals).

Sims recounts the fascinating twist during the recruiting process that led to Sims landing at Texas instead of Rice.

Sims served as the backup defensive tackle to Steve McMichael at Texas in 1978 and 1979 before dominating in 1980 and 1981. Sims discusses his friendship with McMichael, whom he faced in the Super Bowl in the 1985 season, when Sims' Patriots went up against McMichael's Chicago Bears.

Sims talks about his former Texas coach Fred Akers, who passed away Dec. 7, 2020, just before Sims learned of his selection for the College Football Hall of Fame (along with 2021 inductees who include former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo).

With Texas preparing to go to Arkansas on Sept. 14, Sims recounts his battles with then-perennial power Arkansas, including his first-ever start, which came in UT's season opener in 1980 against the Razorbacks.

Sims also shares his thoughts on what it will take to return Texas to national prominence as well as the hire of new coach Steve Sarkisian.

The Flagship: Longhorns deserving of preseason MVP attention for Texas football Mar 04, 2021
    Show notes

Spring football is right around the corner for Texas as the Longhorns make their way towards their first spring practice in two years. With Texas having several new coaches leading the charge ahead of the 2021 football season, some may wonder if this could be a rebuilding year for the Longhorns. But don't count out the level of talent head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff inherited in Year 1 on the job as they take over a roster with plenty of skill across the board.

On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 managing editor Taylor Estes and columnist Chip Brown weigh in on the Longhorns' talent at hand as Texas prepares to begin spring ball come March 23. The Flagship opens the show with the hosts thoughts on players who should be deserving of preseason offensive and defensive MVP honors, including two sophomores who didn't see starting action until late in the 2020 season. The Flagship shifts gears to hoops as the Longhorns' up-and-down late season performances continue under Shaka Smart and what a March Madness collapse could mean for the future of the Texas basketball program. The hosts also touch on the UT baseball team, which has won five of the last six games following opening the season with an 0-3 start against three Top 10 opponents.

After a short break, The Flagship returns with more football talk, including what Casey Thompson could bring to the Longhorns if he continues where he left off in the 2020 Valero Alamo Bowl game, why Alfred Collins could be poised for a monster year and the confidence level in Texas hoops winning their first NCAA Tournament games under Smart's watch.

Catch all of that and much more on this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast.

Longhorn Blitz: Texas spring practice preview begins with the secondary Mar 02, 2021
    Show notes

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe begin previewing the first Texas spring practice under head coach Steve Sarkisian with a look at the Texas secondary. Do the Longhorns have a legitimate No. 1 cornerback? Should D'Shawn Jamison move to a position on the back end where he can have more of a consistent impact on the game? How do Chris Adimora and B.J. Foster fit into the new scheme? Can Pete Kwiatkowski and Terry Joseph tie the front end of the defense and the back end together the way Kwiatkowski and Jimmy Lake were able to when building an elite defense at Washington? Those questions and more get discussed on the latest edition of the Longhorn Blitz podcast!

The Flagship Interview: Longtime UT reporter Roger Wallace weighs in on Texas Mar 01, 2021
    Show notes

On this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, long-time Texas reporter Roger Wallace, the sports director at KXAN-TV in Austin the past 26 years, has been a part of Longhorn Radio Network broadcasts since 2004.

We talk to Wallace about the state of Texas football, the $25 million decision to move on from Tom Herman and Herman's staff and the hiring of Steve Sarkisian.

We ask Wallace what are "realistic expectations" (if such a thing exists among Texas fans) for Year 1 under Sarkisian?

One of Wallace's first assignments with the Longhorn Radio Network was serving as the sideline reporter for Texas' football game at Arkansas in 2004. Wallace called it "one of the loudest atmospheres I've ever been in - to this day - including at Ohio State in 2005." Of course, Texas plays at Arkansas again in Game 2 of 2021.

We talk to Wallace about the state of Texas basketball in Year 6 under Shaka Smart as well as his thoughts on Vic Schaefer's first year leading the Texas women's basketball program.

Wallace is a graduate of Indiana University. In fact, his senior year at IU was the same season then-basketball coach Bobby Knight threw a chair across the court against Purdue - and Wallace recounts it all for you.

Wallace recaps his day Saturday when he called the Texas women's basketball game against OU when the Sooners erased a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes to upset Texas in OT before going over to Disch-Falk Field to help Craig Way call the Texas-BYU baseball game (in which the Cougars overcame a 4-0 deficit to knock off UT).

Of course, we also ask Wallace about some of his favorite moments calling the action on the Longhorn Radio Network since 2004!!
