The Flagship Interview: Bruce Feldman weighs in on Steve Sarkisian, Texas staff Feb 01, 2021
    Show notes

On this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown picks the brain of longtime college football authority Bruce Feldman about Texas' hiring of Steve Sarkisian.

Feldman, who covers college football for FOX as well as The Athletic, has also written several books, including his most recent - Flip The Script: Lessons learned on the road to a championship with Ed Orgeron.

Chip asked Feldman to compare the career arcs of Orgeron and Sarkisian as Sark now takes on the expectations at Texas after failing at USC previously (just as Orgeron had to take on the expectations at LSU after also being let go as an interim coach at USC).

Feldman, who is based on the West Coast and is very familiar with Pac-12 football, weighed in on Sarkisian's hiring of Washington's Pete Kwiatkowski as defensive coordinator and Montana State head coach Jeff Choate as co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.

Feldman discusses how he thinks Kwiatkowski's defensive philosophy will fit in the Big 12.

Feldman worked with Urban Meyer this past season at FOX and provided insight on what that was like while Texas was courting Meyer.

Feldman also rates (on a scale of 1-10) how he thinks Texas did with the hiring of Sarkisian and Sark's staff.

Catch all of that and much more on this week’s interview edition of The Flagship Podcast.

The Flagship: Longhorns working the transfer portal, QB competition and more Jan 27, 2021
    Show notes

The Longhorns are looking to add key players to positions of need under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, and have turned out to find some success in the NCAA transfer portal. But with that success, Texas has also lost out on some key members of the roster, who are taking their talents elsewhere to start fresh at new schools.

On the mid-week episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes dive in to the latest news coming out of the Forty Acres, including the basketball team's second loss of Big 12 play to Oklahoma before shifting the focus to the football program after the Longhorns added to key positions in the transfers of former Notre Dame edge rusher Ovie Oghoufo and former LSU linebacker Ray Thornton. The hosts break down what the Longhorns are gaining in these two transfers, in addition to some of the losses Texas has undergone with the transfers of Jalen Green to Mississippi State and Keaontay Ingram to USC, and how that impacts the depth at cornerback and running back for Sarkisian and his staff.

The Flagship also weighs in on the QB race with Casey Thompson, Hudson Card and Charles Wright, and how a message Sarkisian said during his Zoom call with the media last week may have been directed at Thompson as he enters spring football appearing to be in the driver's seat in the QB competition.

Following a brief break, The Flagship returns with Love It or Leave It, with this week's topics focused on how substantial the additions of Thornton and Oghoufo are for the Longhorns, how substantial the loss of Green and Ingram are and what to expect from the quarterback competition with Sarkisian leading the offense for Texas.

Catch all of that and more on the mid-week episode of The Flagship Podcast.

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe break down the staff hires by Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian on offense and how they can best help the Longhorns returning on that side of the ball in 2021.

The Flagship: Washington radio host Dave Mahler goes in depth on PK, Sarkisian and more Jan 25, 2021
    Show notes

On this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, Dave “Softy” Mahler has been a sports talk radio voice on KJR in Seattle for 27 years, including the Washington Huskies’ coaches’ shows as well as pre- and post-game shows for UW football games.

Mahler was the first to report Pete Kwiatkowski was leaving Washington as defensive coordinator to accept the same position on Steve Sarkisian’s staff at Texas.

Mahler also covered Jeff Choate at UW in 2014 and 2015, when Choate was the defensive line coach on Kwiatkowski’s defense and special teams coordinator under then-coach Chris Petersen before becoming the head coach at Montana State in 2016.

We talked to Mahler about Kwiatkowski’s seven successful years at Washington and his decision to let UW defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake become co-coordinator and call the UW defense in 2018 (to keep Lake from leaving).

Petersen stepped down after the 2019 season, and Lake was named head coach of the Huskies.

Mahler gives you his take on why Kwiatkowski left after helping put 17 players from UW into the NFL and after helping UW’s defense become one of the best in college football.

Mahler talks about what Texas is getting in Choate as Texas’ co-coordinator and inside linebackers coach as well as Choate’s recruiting prowess.

And, of course, Mahler gives you his thoughts on Steve Sarkisian’s time in Seattle and why this appears to be the right time for Sark to be a head coach again.

The Flagship: Steve Sarkisian working to finalize his Texas staff Jan 20, 2021
    Show notes

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is inching closer and closer to finalizing his new staff with the Longhorns after zeroing in on his expected new defensive coordinator hire and adding a key recruiter to his staff at Texas.

On the mid-week episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes deliver the latest on Sarkisian's defensive coordinator search, which has led to the first-year head coach working to finalize a deal with long-time Washington assistant coach Pete Kwiatkowski to takeover as DC with the Longhorns. Upon finalizing a deal with the Huskies defensive coordinator, Sarkisian will be one step closer to wrapping up his first task as head coach at Texas in locking in a solid coaching staff to help him in rebuilding the Texas football program.

While finding a solid DC has been a huge priority for Sarkisian, one could argue one of the most impressive hires went down last week when the head coach added Alabama special teams coordinator Jeff Banks to take on the same role with the Longhorns. Banks is considered one of the top recruiters in college football, and someone Nick Saban was not too thrilled with losing after Sarkisian poached him away to make the move to Austin from Tuscaloosa.

The Flagship Podcast weighs in on what Texas is adding in new DC Kwiatkowski, who has spent the last seven seasons helping lead the defense at the University of Washington, and addresses some of the other members of Sarkisian's staff. The hosts then shift their focus to the weekly 'Love it or Leave it' segment, with this week's topics addressing how Kwiatkowski measures up to some other DC candidates Sarkisian considered, who the best assistant coaching hire has been up to this point and what to think of Texas hoops' first loss of Big 12 play.

Catch all of that and much more on the mid-week edition of The Flagship Podcast.

The Flagship Interview: Breaking down new Texas coach Steve Sarkisian with BamaOnline.com Jan 18, 2021
    Show notes

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is working to complete his coaching staff with the Longhorns after officially taking over for Tom Herman last Tuesday following Alabama’s win over Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship.

On this week’s interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 welcomes Travis Reier from BamaOnline.com to get an in-depth view of the first-year Texas head coach.

The Flagship Podcast interview episode discusses Reier’s thoughts on Texas hiring Steve Sarkisian after he covered the former Alabama OC for two years and how much of Bama's success the past two years on offense is the talent recruited by Nick Saban and how much of it has been Sark?

What is Texas getting in Kyle Flood as an offensive line coach and likely offensive coordinator? How good of a recruiter is Flood?

Who is A.J. Milwee, whom Sark is bringing in as QB coach?

Reier gave his thoughts on Sark luring tight ends and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks away from Saban's staff and if Bama assistants have a shelf life under Saban.

Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding appeared to be someone Sarkisian was interested in possibly bringing to Texas. Reier weighed in what Golding has meant to Alabama and Saban the past three seasons.

Finally, Reier gave his thoughts on how successful Sarkisian will be as the head coach at Texas.

Catch all of that and more on this week’s interview episode of The Flagship Podcast with BamaOnline.com writer Travis Reier.
