The Flagship: Former Texas basketball coach Tom Penders gives his thoughts on Chris Beard Apr 05, 2021
    Show notes

In this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to former Texas basketball coach Tom Penders, who gave new Texas coach Chris Beard his first taste of coaching as a student assistant at UT in the early 1990s.

Penders goes into vivid detail about Beard's days as a student assistant at Texas - from Beard helping work at summer camps to stepping in at practice from time to time when the team might be short a player.

Penders talks about how observant Beard was as a student assistant - from pointing out to the coaching staff when a UT player might be down emotionally to Beard relentlessly cutting up film in an 8-foot by 12-foot cubby hole next to Penders' office.

Penders recalls going to Seminole, Okla., to visit Beard while Beard was the head coach at Seminole Junior College ("You fly into Oklahoma City and drive forever, and when you get to 'ever,' you bang a left to get to Seminole," Penders laughed.)

Penders said Beard had Penders talk to Bob Knight when Knight was considering hiring Beard onto his staff at Texas Tech and recalls the foremost thing Knight wanted to know from Penders: "Is he loyal?" Knight asked.

The game of basketball "keeps evolving," Penders says on the Flagship Podcast, and then Penders gives examples of how Beard has kept evolving with it.

Penders talks about why Texas can be considered "a hard job" for basketball coaches and why he thinks Beard will be successful.

Penders, who knew Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte when Del Conte was the AD at Rice and Penders was the head coach at Houston, also stresses the importance of a coach and athletic director working well together and why he thinks Beard and Del Conte will be a good combination.

Penders talks about what he has learned from Beard over the years and why Beard is much more than a good Xs and Os coach.

"A lot of coaches recruit and game plan," Penders told the Flagship Podcast. "Chris' teams know fundamentals, have great footwork, and his players always get better."

Penders gives his thoughts on how long it will take Beard to build something at Texas like Beard constructed in five seasons at Texas Tech.

Catch all of that and more on this week’s interview episode of The Flagship Podcast with special guest Tom Penders.

EMERGENCY PODCAST: Texas hires Chris Beard to take over UT basketball program Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

Less than a week after Shaka Smart left Texas for Marquette, the Longhorns secured their No. 1 guy to take over the Texas basketball program in former Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard.

Beard makes his way to Austin after a highly successful run in Lubbock that saw Beard lead the Red Raiders to the program’s first Elite Eight, Final Four and the National title game appearances in school history.

On this week's emergency podcast edition of The Flagship, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes discuss the new Texas basketball coach, who interviewed for the Texas head-coaching role Thursday morning and accepted the job the same day.

The Flagship weighs in on how big of a hire this is for a Texas basketball program that has not made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament since 2008. The hosts also give their take on how this hire shows the investment Texas AD Chris Del Conte is willing to make in an effort to turn the Longhorns back into a team that is a consistent threat in March like Texas previously was in the glory years of the basketball program back in the early 2000s.

Texas fans won’t want to miss this emergency edition of The Flagship Podcast.

The Flagship: Longhorns expected to resume spring football, latest intel on Texas basketball coaching search Mar 31, 2021
    Show notes

From spring football to Texas hoops' coaching search and beyond, there's plenty to discuss about the Longhorns on this week's loaded episode of The Flagship Podcast.

Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes weigh in on the hottest headlines surrounding the Longhorns, starting with the latest update on Texas football, which could soon return to practice.

The Longhorns expect to resume spring football this week after COVID-19 caused Texas to pause all activities after the first day of spring practice. Barring any changes, the Longhorns will be able to get back in action Thursday as they make their way through the first spring schedule under head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff.

The hosts weigh in on how the Longhorns have managed the unexpected pause of practice and how it will impact the future spring schedule, before shifting focus to the latest on Texas basketball's head coaching search after Shaka Smart announced his departure from the Longhorns to take over as head coach of Marquette. All eyes are on Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard who is the leading candidate in the search, but other names remain in play in the event the Longhorns do not land Beard.

After a quick break, The Flagship returns with our weekly Love it or Leave it segment, as this week's topics include the timeframe Texas expects to hire the next basketball coach, how much of a setback the pause in spring practice truly is for the football team and legendary Texas men's swim coach Eddie Reese's retirement after taking home his 15th national title win with the Longhorns.

Catch all of that and much more on this week's loaded edition of The Flagship Podcast.

Longhorn Blitz: Royal Ivey, football's COVID-19 spring practice pause and a Texas-sized QB battle Mar 30, 2021
    Show notes

It's a loaded episode of Longhorn Blitz with Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe discussing the COVID-19 issues that have forced the football program to pause spring practice and the head coaching opening in the basketball program as a result of Shaka Smart's departure for Marquette.

Lifetime Longhorn Royal Ivey an introductory interview in the days following Smart's exit and he's got the support of prominent alums. What could Ivey bring to the program that makes him a good fit for the job?

Jake Smith suffered a foot injury in the first spring practice of the Steve Sarkisian era, which was the only practice of the week after COVID-19 issues shut things down. The pause might've been caused by players who left the Austin area for spring break, bringing into question things like player accountability, dedication and team leadership in Sarkisian's first spring.

The quarterback battle between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson is off and running. For the sake of the future of the program, what's the best outcome that can happen as Sarkisian, A.J. Milwee and Kyle Flood go about naming the successor to Sam Ehlinger behind center?

You can get the latest Longhorn news and analysis at Horns247. The Horn, Austin's flagship station for Texas athletics, is where Rod (3-7 p.m.) and Jeff (10 a.m.-12 p.m.) can be heard on the air daily.

The Flagship: Texas women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer talks upset over Maryland, Longhorns' trip to the Elite Eight Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

In this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to Texas women's basketball coach Vic Schaefer after about four hours of sleep following his team's stunning, 64-61 upset of second-seeded Maryland to reach UT's first Elite Eight since 2016.

Most of the Sunday night and early Monday morning was spent scouting top-seeded South Carolina, UT's Elite Eight opponent in San Antonio on Tuesday night.

Schaefer and UConn coach Geno Auriemma are the only coaches to reach four straight Elite Eights in the women's game (after Schaefer did it three straight times at Mississippi State, reaching the national championship game in 2017 and 2018).

But Schaefer has done it this year with a completely different team. Texas, which has the seventh-ranked scoring offense in the 10-team Big 12, used to be dependent on the scoring and rebounding of 6-foot-5 star center Charli Collier, UT's only starter taller than 6-feet.

And even while going 21-9 up to this point, Texas couldn't match third-seeded UCLA's size in the second round of the NCAA Tournament nor Maryland's size, depth and offense (the Terps averaged nearly 90 points per game this season, making them a Final Four fave to many). But in the end, UCLA and Maryland couldn't match Texas' defensive intensity.

Schaefer has gotten a team that relies primarily on six players to buy into his suffocating defense and all the physical and mental demands it takes to relentlessly commit to playing great defense for 40 minutes.

Schaefer talked about how he's most proud of that mental transformation on this team and how close the players have become and how determined his players are to fight through adversity, such as Maryland's 9-0 start to Sunday night's game.

We asked Schaefer about how his team has become capable of winning - even if opposing teams can limit Collier, a Lisa Leslie Award finalist who averages 19.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.

Lately, it's been the emergence of graduate transfer point guard Kyra Lambert, junior guard Joanne Allen-Taylor and sophomore guard Celeste Taylor, who had 24 points in UT's win over UCLA, and followed that up with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Maryland.

Schaefer said, "Celeste doesn't like to lose. She and I share that. We both hate to lose more than we like to win."

Schaefer talks about Collier, a junior in eligibility, graduating in May and deciding to move on to the WNBA Draft, where she'll have a chance to be the No. 1 overall selection.

And Schaefer talks about how his program will be adding three Top 25 prospects in the 2021 recruiting class - forward Aaliyah Moore (No. 6, according to HoopGurlz); point guard Rori Harmon (No. 10); and point guard Kyndall Hunter (No. 24); along with two top junior college prospects in Kobe King Hawea, a 5-11 guard/forward; and Femme Sikuzani, a 6-5 center, each of whom will have three years of eligibility.

This is a can't-miss interview with a coach who knows how to connect with players and get the most out of them - as we're seeing right now in the NCAA Tournament.

The Flagship: Takeaways from Texas spring football, why Shaka Smart needs to go Mar 24, 2021
    Show notes

Football is back in the air in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns have made their much anticipated return to the gridiron and kicked off the first spring football practice schedule under new head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff. Texas has a number of questions that need to be addressed leading up to the 2021 football season, including who will be taking snaps at QB between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card.

On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes weigh in on what they are hearing early on in spring ball, including some potential attrition news on the defensive side of the ball. The host discuss what Sarkisian has said following the first days of spring ball and what to make of his comments about the quarterback position as Card and Thompson battle for the No. 1 job. The Flagship also weighs in on some injury news, including the loss of junior wide receiver Jake Smith, who went down with a foot injury during Day 1 of spring practice, and what the linebacker position looks like with DeMarvion Overshown out for spring after undergoing shoulder surgery during spring break.

The Flagship then shifts focus to the embattled Texas basketball program after yet another first round loss in the NCAA Tournament and what that could mean for Shaka Smart's future. After touching some on basketball, baseball and softball, The Flagship returns with our weekly Love it or Leave it segment, with this week's topics focused on if Shaka Smart needs to be fired, who could be his replacement, the excitement level for Texas spring football and more!

    Show notes

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe break down the Texas offense as the Longhorns hit the field for the program's first spring under head coach Steve Sarkisian. Is the tight end position going to remain a mystery with so many bodies at the position? Could there be a changing of the guard along the offensive line soon with several young, talented linemen in position to rise up the depth chart? Will the wide receivers be turned loose in Sarkisian's offense? Those questions and more get answered on this week's edition of Longhorn Blitz!

The Flagship: Dallas Morning News reporter Chuck Carlton weighs in on Shaka Smart's future, Texas spring football Mar 22, 2021
    Show notes

In this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, we talk to Chuck Carlton, longtime Big 12 beat writer for The Dallas Morning News, about the state of Texas basketball under Shaka Smart as well as the start of Longhorns' spring football under Steve Sarkisian.

Carlton, who is in Indianapolis covering the Big 12 teams in the NCAA Tournament, gives his thoughts on how Shaka Smart went from penthouse (winning UT's first Big 12 tournament) to outhouse (falling to 0-3 in NCAA Tournament play after being upset by 14th-seeded Abilene Christian) in the span of a week.

With Texas set to open the new Moody Center a year from now, Carlton weighs in on who might make sense if Texas makes a change in basketball coaches - as well as just how much would cost if Texas wanted to go after Texas Tech coach Chris Beard.

When it comes to spring football, Carlton offers up his top storylines heading into Sarkisian's first on-field practices as UT's new coach, including the Longhorns' quarterback battle between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card.

Carlton also discusses his top concerns heading into UT's spring practices, which include the development of the offensive line.

Carlton and our own Chip Brown of Horns247 go back and forth in a lively conversation about what sets Sarkisian apart from other former UT coaches when they took the job.

Carlton and Brown also discuss whether Texas fans should be concerned about the UT quarterback situation or about who will replace Joseph Ossai as the team's primary pass rusher.
