A Pod of Their Own, Episode 142: Playoffs?! Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by discussing the state of the Mets heading into this weekend’s pivotal (and likely division-deciding) series against the Braves—that is, if the games don’t get washed out by the impending hurricane.

Next, we talk about who might make the Mets’ playoff roster and who might not.

We also talk about how much fun baseball history we are witnessing all around the game right now from Pete Alonso setting the franchise RBI record to Albert Pujols’ 700th career home run to Aaron Judge’s pursuit for 62.

Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

UnforMETable, Episode 97: Mike Bruhert Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the team past.

Mike Bruhert grew up approximately six miles from Shea Stadium, but his journey to play there was incredibly unlikely. He went 1-16 at his high school, but was discovered by a Mets’ scout in a sandlot all-star game.

Early in his Mets tenure, Bruhert met—and eventually married—Gil Hodges’ daughter Irene. Meanwhile, he toiled in the minors for more than seven seasons before finally earning a rotation spot for Joe Torre’s 1978 Mets squad.

UnforMETable, Episode 96: Pete Harnisch Sep 20, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the team past.

A first round draft pick out of Fordham University by tge Baltimore Orioles, Pete Harnisch made his MLB debut before he turned 22.

Harnisch blossomed in Houston, turning into an All Star after Baltimore included him in an historically bad trade.

It thus seemed a joyous homecoming when the Mets acquired Harnisch before the 1995 season. However, the righty struggled with injuries, mental health issues, and disputes with manager Bobby Valentine. He’d flash his more traditional form in Cincinnati after his escape from New York, narrowly missing a chance to haunt his former team in 1999.

A Pod of Their Own, Episode 141: It’s One Minor Leaguer, Michael. What Could it Cost? Sep 14, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome back to A Pod of Their Own, a show by the women of Amazin’ Avenue where we talk all things Mets, social justice issues in baseball, and normalize female voices in the sports podcasting space.

This week, we begin by discussing the Mets and how they can’t seem to take advantage of their easy September schedule. We talk about Starling Marte’s absence and what the Mets are going to do about the DH black hole for the postseason.

Next, we talk about the league voluntarily recognizing the minor leaguers joining the MLBPA—a surprising, but very welcome development. We also discuss the latest rule changes that will be implemented next season: bigger bases, a pitch clock, and banning defensive shifting.

Finally, we wrap things up with Walk-off Wins, where each of us talks about what’s making us happy this week, baseball-related or otherwise.

UnforMETable, Episode 95: Lenny Harris Sep 13, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin’ Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the team past.

Lenny Harris was a speedy, versatile player who ultimately appeared at every position on the diamond except for catcher over his 18-year career. Harris was useful utility player early in his career for the Reds and the Dodgers.

Over the latter half of his career, Harris switched teams often, as teams in the pennant race would often look to add his veteran presence and pinch hitting acumen to their bench. This happened twice with the Mets, as Harris was reunited with his old Dodger friend and teammate Mike Piazza in New York.

After a productive stint with the team in 1998, Harris came back to the Mets in a separate trade in 2000, serving as a pinch hitter for that year’s N.L. Champion squad and returning in 2001, when he would break Manny Mota’s all-time record for pinch hits in a Mets uniform.
