Show notes

Happy Holidays, listeners! We're celebrating the season here at Movies for Life with a look at both of the hosts favorite Christmas movies! This discussion went on for quite a long time (like pretty much all of our discussions do) so we're going to break this episode up - look for Part 2 coming soon! But first, we're talking about Michele's favorite Christmas movie - the Bill Murray-starring comedy SCROOGED from 1988! H We gush about the cast (especially Karen Allen!), the laughs, and the heart of this unique take on the Dickens' story "A Christmas Carol." Yule love it!

MFL - Remakes #1: THE INVISIBLE MAN Nov 23, 2021

Show notes

Now you see us, now you don't...

This episode marks the first in a new series on Movies for Life all about movies and their remakes! The more different the movies are, the better - and this first pairing of movies couldn't be more different! Almost 90 years apart, we're taking a look at the two iterations of THE INVISIBLE MAN from 1933 and 2020. The original James Whale film is of course a classic, with an interesting and often dark, humorous look at the human condition and the corruption of power, and also with special effects that still hold up to this day. Then we go even deeper into Leigh Whannell's modern update of the story, which features a tour de force performance from Elisabeth Moss. The terrifyingly real situation explored in the movie is sadly very relevant, and even more effective to the hosts because of personal connections. We hope you all enjoy this discussion, and look for more Remakes episodes coming in the future!

MFL - Forever Favorites #5 Part 2: DIRTY DANCING Nov 09, 2021

Show notes

We have arrived at our final movie in our coverage of Brian and Michele's Forever Favorites, and it's a bona fide classic. Michele's #1 forever favorite movie is 1987's DIRTY DANCING. Listen as the two hosts get Swayze Crazy talking about all the things that make this pop culture phenomenon so much more meaningful and personal than what's on the surface. We love the characters and the music, but we also love the way we connect with the movie in terms of the evolution of the father-daughter relationship, as well as the true love and appreciation between the two main characters that we all know - Baby and Johnny. We hope you've enjoyed this journey through all of our Forever Favorites and that you have the time of your life with this final discussion (of course I had to say it).

All aboard Doris the tour bus as we hit the road with Stillwater and Cameron Crowe's shamelessly personal epic Almost Famous. We look at the film through the eyes of its major characters, especially William Miller, Russell Hammond, William's mother Elaine, and of course, the enigmatic and intriguing Penny Lane. We discuss the moments that move us, the lines that make us laugh, and the music that gets into our heads. All things that gets this movie under our skin and into our souls.

MFL - A PERFECT WORLD Sep 21, 2021

Show notes

Things don't always go as planned, so we ended up discussing just one movie this week--Clint Eastwood's unsung 1993 masterpiece A Perfect World. We discuss the moving story as well as the incredible cast led by Kevin Costner, Laura Dern, and Clint Eastwood. We also discuss how much we love Bradley Whitford but hate the character he plays in this movie. So hop in your time machine, grab your Casper the Friendly Ghost costume, and get chased by an Airstream. It's sure to be a great time. Is that a threat? No, that's a fact.

MFL - Films About Filmmaking #4: MUTE WITNESS and LIVING IN OBLIVION Sep 08, 2021

Show notes

It's another episode on our favorite topic on Movies For Life - more Films About Filmmaking! This week we have two absolute gems to talk about, possibly deeper cuts, that are totally worth giving a look if you haven't seen them! First up from Michele is the surprisingly funny and twisty thriller whose plot centers around the making of a slasher film - we're talking MUTE WITNESS from 1995! Then, also from 1995, we dive into the hilarious yet poignant LIVING IN OBLIVION! This is a much more laid-back, fun chat than most of our episodes, so sit with us and we hope you have as great a time listening as we did recording!

Note: THELMA & LOUISE is teased at the end as being a movie coming up on the next episode. Unfortunately that didn't work out so we will only be talking about A PERFECT WORLD for that show.
