MFL - Films About Filmmaking #5: BOOGIE NIGHTS and BOWFINGER Apr 19, 2022

Show notes

Our favorite topic to dive into on Movies For Life is Films About Filmmaking, and we're FINALLY back with another one this week! These two films were super fun to dive into and talk about and once again, they ended up working really well together. First up for discussion is Michele's pick of a movie about a different kind of filmmaking than we've talked about before - Paul Thomas Anderson's BOOGIE NIGHTS from 1997! The darkly humorous look into the porn industry of the 70s and early 80s is driven by a stellar cast each portraying an interesting and complex character, and we talk about them all! Then we get into Brian's pick for the show (which was originally supposed to be paired with SINGIN' IN THE RAIN) and have an absolute blast discussing Frank Oz's 1999 comedy BOWFINGER! These were both kind of fun, freewheeling conversations that we hope you'll enjoy!

Show notes

For this episode we invited another of our friends on to discuss a favorite movie. This time, we welcome Stephen Foxworthy of the Disenfranchised Podcast to discuss a little movie you may have heard about, CITIZEN KANE. We dive into multiple aspects of the film from its technical achievements, marvelous acting, time-jumping screenplay, the Hearst connections and much more. We also discuss Orson Welles the man and the artist. It's quite a freewheeling conversation that hops all over, not entirely unlike the film itself. So join us as we discuss the greatest film of all time that isn't TREMORS or GHOSTBUSTERS.

MFL - DOCTOR SLEEP Mar 22, 2022

Show notes

Welcome back, fellow FlanaFans! Well, we hope you are fans because this week's episode of Movies for Life is all about another work of filmmaker Mike Flanagan - the 2018 adaptation of DOCTOR SLEEP! Hear us answer some of the questions that you all had for us on Twitter as we discuss all the different reasons why we love this mashup of Stephen King's book THE SHINING, Kubrick's movie THE SHINING, AND King's sequel book DOCTOR SLEEP. Is Rose the Hat one of our favorite King villains? What are the most standout sequences? And most importantly: who's hotter - Rebecca Ferguson or Ewan McGregor? All that and more is discussed, so we hope you enjoy and as always, thank you so much for listening!

MFL - MIDNIGHT MASS Mar 08, 2022

Show notes

Get ready for a doozy of an episode, listeners! This week, Brian and Michele are starting their exploration of a few of the works of filmmaker Mike Flanagan, and tackling their biggest subject to date for one episode! We're looking at Flanagan's third limited series, Midnight Mass from 2021. Both of us come from very different religious backgrounds, yet the show and what it explores both had a big impact on us. So we try to tackle everything we can, looking at some of the main characters and who we related to or liked or hated the most, and also the themes and questions brought forth through their actions and the plot. It's a lot to cover, and it's a lot of deep discussion in this episode, and one that we are both very proud of. So thank you for listening!

MFL - Actor Directorial Debuts: FRAILTY and A STAR IS BORN Feb 22, 2022

Show notes

This week's episode of Movies for Life takes us back to when we used to get those weird but still somehow strangely perfect pairings of movies with our topic on the directorial debuts of actors (in movies that they both have starring roles in, actually)! First up for discussion is Brian's pick of 2001's FRAILTY, directed by the wonderful late Bill Paxton. What is the real truth with what is going on in this movie, and whose perspective should we believe? It's all discussed here! (NOTE: We spoil the ending of FRAILTY right at the top of the discussion so we can better talk about the movie so if you haven't seen it yet, please watch before you listen!) Then the next movie we tackle is Michele's choice of 2018's A STAR IS BORN! Directed by Bradley Cooper, this is the fourth version of this story, but as you'll hear in our talk about it, it's probably one of the best! As always, thank you so much for listening!

MFL - Partners in Crime: GUN CRAZY and DOG DAY AFTERNOON Feb 08, 2022

Show notes

Get ready for one of our most fun - and okay, most horny - episodes yet as the two of us commit a crime together! We're talking about movies that feature Partners in Crime, and we have got some excellent selections for you today. First up is Brian's choices of 1950's GUN CRAZY, starring Peggy Cummins and John Dahl. You'll hear Brian as you've never heard him before during this discussion, so trust us, you don't want to miss it! Then we're covering yet another Sidney Lumet movie with Michele's choice of DOG DAY AFTERNOON from 1975. It's a heist film like no other, really - quiet and poignant, and in several ways, is still relevant today. Thank you so much for your continued support and as always, we hope you enjoy the discussion!
