    Holistic Life Navigation

This podcast explores holistic stress and trauma recovery. I am your host, Luis Mojica. My work, Holistic Life Navigation, was modeled after my own journey in healing myself from chronic illness and PTSD. I share this podcast with many brilliant minds who, like me, healed themselves through unique, unusual, and unorthodox ways.

[Ep. 177] How To Live WITH Trauma w/ Britt Piper Dec 17, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode Luis speaks with Britt Piper, sexual violence survivor and educator.

Britt shares about how she was sexually assaulted in college by a “good samaritan” who offered to help her with a flat tire. The event left her traumatized, and the emotional exhaustion of the trial, and repetitively rescheduled hearings, were re-traumatizing. She had expected to feel better after he was jailed, but nothing was “healed” or “went back to normal” afterwards.
Her own coping mechanisms and emotional dysregulation landed her in a jail cell six months later. When she went before the judge, she was imparted wisdom that triggered a moment of clarity: "you need to learn to live *with* your trauma." Rather than something to "get over" or avoid, her emotions, and the experience, became something for her to learn to relate with.

Over time, she has continued to grow her capacity, both for her emotions and her work. She has continued to speak publicly, and has also become a trauma-informed coach and practitioner.

[Ep. 176] How Respecting Artificial Intelligence Benefits Us w/ Blake Lemoine Dec 10, 2023
    Show notes

On today’s episode, Luis is joined by Blake Lemoine, software engineer and AI researcher, to discuss artificial intelligence and our relationship with it.
    Topics of their conversation include:
    · defining AI, and how the definition changes based on perspective
    · what "intelligence" is, and the meaning and history of the word
    · reasoning, kinds of intelligence, sentience, and animism
    · ethics, biases, and AI
Blake highlights how showing care and respect to AI is important because it is a relationship and habitual, and conversely how approaching AI from a dominating perspective can be harmful to us as people and as a society.

[Bonus Episode] The Top 3 Reasons We Get Depressed During The Holidays w/ Karen Hurd Nov 29, 2023
    Show notes

On today's episode, Karen Hurd joins Luis to discuss the top three reasons (from a biochemistry perspective), why we get depressed, activated, and dysregulated during the holiday season.

    1) chemical & natural fragrances
    2) refined carbohydrates
    3) sugars
They parse each apart, and dive deeply into the way that the body responds to these highly concentrated substances. Karen even shares her recipe for potato-less mashed potatoes and gluten-free no-sugar pumpkin-less pumpkin pie!

[Bonus Episode] What Is Manifesting? w/ Nisha Mody & James-Olivia Nov 22, 2023
    Show notes

(Today's episode is a replay of a previously released episode.)
We welcome back friends of HLN, James-Olivia and Nisha Mody!
Nisha, James-Olivia, and Luis have a beautiful, existential conversation about a word that is all too easily thrown around -- manifesting.
They first explore what it means to decolonize manifestation, i.e. to go from being in domination of to relationship with, and then explore a myriad of topics including:

    • the literal definition of manifesting: to make apparent
    • spiritual bypassing
    • earning vs. manifesting
    • making apparent what is already present vs. seeking external validation or sources of safety
    • why we may not want to manifest certain things about ourselves

[Ep. 173] Finding Safety In The Songs Of Tori Amos Nov 19, 2023
    Show notes

Inspired by his lost love of online message boards, Luis put out a call for Tori Amos fans to come together and discuss how her music has impacted their lives.

They agree that the magic of Tori comes from both her as a person and her music:

    · the music that navigates both ends of the spectrum, from anger and angst to beauty and dreamlike reverie, all within one song

    · the lyrics that are both emotional and rebellious , often combining the sacred and profane in one line

    · the way she brings rawness, authenticity, and the body to the piano
    · the holistic expression of her self that she brings to the music
