Episode 47: When I Die Give Me an Exalted Funeral (ft. David Hoskins) Nov 17, 2024

Show notes

Our boy Dave (davidhoskins) flew up north to hang with us at ArcaneCon and dive a little deeper into RPGs and their relationship with our beloved tabletop wargames. We talk a little about what it's like to create artwork for and work with creators on some of the wildest RPGs coming out from Exalted Funeral, and about how his experience with RPGs led him to the point he's at. Terry gets his mind blown about Monster Rancher on the PS1 and generating monsters from CDs. Dave and Gage talk PaRappa the Rappa and Rodney Greenblat's work. Phil kills a fly live on air to show his pest control mastery, and Steve talks a little about End Transmission campaign and how he balanced RPG and wargame elements. Dark Tyler (@tylerisalrightatpainting) joins us a bit at the end as a little treat for all you tylerheads. Hooooooboy it's a ride!

Show notes

You know it's about to be a madhouse when we have Paulie Mordheim (@wyrdstoned) and Dark Tyler (@tylerisalrightatpainting) in the mix. We've packed a lot in to this episode, from Bolt Action to 1490 Doom - we're going deep. Steve just got back from a Warhammer Fantasy LARP and tells us about running around as a Skaven. Gage breaks down all the different games he's been playing in the studio and some of the Orktober shenanigans that we had. Terry's moving his home studio around and tries to convince you to throw away your material possessions. Paul talks about being a dwarf guy at heart, and tells us about his new Mordheim warband and Tyler talks about historic hats and the people who love them.

Episode 44: Mr. Bigglesworth and Kel'Thuzad Oct 06, 2024

Show notes

We've got the god of terrain on today - BLERZ (@blerzcraft) and we are deep in campaign plans. Last week we mentioned trying to get a largescale campaign created using the In Rust We Trust server (link below), but we decided we would take a moment to talk about campaigns in general. Part of it is how to plan, and garner interest - and part of our conversation is how to keep the games going! Steve talks about how the New England War Council is planning a campaign using OPR Regiments, Blerz breaks down his Necromunda campaigns, as well as how to incorporate players who jump in and out of the narrative due to not having the time to play. Phil talks about some of the ideas surrounding the Age of Sigmar campaign, and what worked and what didn't, and Gage asks a lot of great questions and makes excuses about why he hasn't primed his army yet (c'mon already!).

Episode 43: Iron Man 2 Sep 22, 2024

Show notes

We are talking about tiny little toys today, specifically the most important tiny little warrior in our army lists - the WARLORD. We talk about how we come up with interesting characters to lead our army, and how the warlord helps to build the theme of the army itself. Steve talks about borrowing vibes from other sources of media (Elden Ring duh). Gage explains how playing games can build the lore of your warlord, and how you can quickly develop names for your leaders with wikipedia. Phil breaks down playing Age of Sigmar 4.0 and hates on New England weather, and Terry explains how thematic units and their leaders help move our hobbying/painting along. Start sharpening your axe! It's time you lead your horde into battle.

Ya'll remember that movie the Warriors? It's a bit like all of the factions in the BroPro world, if you don't know it, check out link. Good movie. Today we go over all the review on the back-end of the Brothers of Promethium event. Our favorite moments, what we could improve, and why you should just give it a go in your own local scene and not give a damn if you have a few hiccups along the way. On top of that, Steve is still on his OPR regiments wave, and talks about running learn to play sessions, and Blerz's (@blerzcraft) rank and flank Beastman army, Terry talks about improv as GM in wargaming, Phil breaks down his game of Age of Sigmar against Pauly Mordheim's Stormcast, and Gage talks about playing 20 person DND games, giving away sprues, and overthinking during the painting process.

You smell that? Burgers sizzlin' on a grill, Vallejo old rust pigment powder floating in the breeze, a heat gun melting xps foam - as the Scum boys try and finish up preparation for the Brothers of Promethium BBQ (or BroProm). Things are shaping up to be a nice little wargaming weekend hosted by yours truly. We talk a little about the specifics of the event, but we don't spoil too much, and we rave about some of the lore ideas for warbands that will be in attendance. Terry sings out some lore by @doom_and_apathy, Phil tells you about dissecting pigs and crashing an e-dirtbike, Steve talks about getting a rattling grime tattoo and gives you a peek into the madness of planning NEMO for next year and Gage explains why Dave Mirra Freestlye BMX 2 is the best.

He's kept it quiet for a week, and now he's spilling all his secrets. You'll hear about the trip, the games, and some of the personalities he ran into along the way. On top of that Terry has beef with blind boxes (and gambling in general), Phil talks more X-files and learns about male marsupials with pouches, and Steve (still) keeps his secrets about the Brothers of Promethium board he's building (wait till you see this gawdang thing). Episode 38: Steve Cut His Finger Off Jul 14, 2024

Show notes

Welcome back to Hive Scum! We're just as silly as we always are. We got a littttttle topic for ya today, we're talkin' terrain. Obviously terrain is a key element to the game, but how do you get there as a beginner, and how important is it to immersion? We talk steps towards your first experiments in terrain-making, different styles/options you have, and how to make interesting settings that add unique elements to your narrative. On top of that, Phil explains how Paranormal Activity was the last movie to have actually scary marketing, and we talk a bit about the Paranormal Activity timeline. Terry brings up the viral clown videos of 2015 and Kurt Vonnegut. Gage makes fun of Terry for being a dad and talks a lot about how much he looks up to the hawk tuah girl (a national hero?), and Steve breaks down the making of a battle report for his new blog post!
