The Back to the Future Trilogy Mar 20, 2015
    Show notes

From the onset of this podcast, we've received so many requests to cover one of the Back to the Future movies . Now that we've hit our 50th episode, we knew we wanted to do something special - so we decided to tackle all three! Back to the Future was such a gigantic part of all of our childhoods and each of us explains why these films meant so much to us back then and why we think their legacy endures. Then it's time to break them down one-by-one and discuss how our opinions of each entry have changed over the years.

Topics include: the one giant leap you have to make with the original film in order for any of it to work, some extremely divisive opinions about Part II, a few surprising reactions to Part III, who the unsung hero of this franchise is, a debate about whether or not a sequel/remake/reboot could ever work, and much much more!

The Breakfast Club Mar 06, 2015
    Show notes

Since The Breakfast Club just celebrated its 30th anniversary, it seemed like a good excuse to take another look at this seminal film. We all enjoyed it as kids, continued to appreciate it as we got older, and were anxious to discuss why it remains so relevant when so many other movies from this era feel unbelievably dated. Topics include: the opening David Bowie quote and how it sort of sums up John Hughes' approach to telling stories about teenagers, the original plan to check in on these characters every ten years or so and why that never came to pass, alternate casting choices, Chris' one issue with Principal Vernon, a surprisingly spirited debate about what happens after Andy smokes pot, the incredible "group therapy" scene, the pros and cons of Allison's makeover, and much much more!

    Encino Man Feb 20, 2015
    Show notes

After one of our listeners suggested covering a Pauly Shore movie, we all decided that Encino Man seemed like the logical place to start. A ten-year-old Donna thought this was awesome and that Pauly was the future of comedy. Carlos didn't warm up to it until college and all of his friends started quoting it. Chris didn't hate it, but he was never as excited about Pauly Shore as a lot of other people seemed to be. You know what the most surprising thing about rewatching it was? Our main character Dave is probably one of the least likable protagonists in any of the movies we've looked at so far! Other topics include: how this isn't really "a Pauly Shore movie" in the traditional sense, Donna's huge gripe with the prologue, why the love interest's jerk boyfriend isn't really a jerk at all, a really touching moment that's completely betrayed by Dave "White Fang-ing" Link a few scenes later, the way everybody keeps getting together and breaking up off-screen, the wrong way to binge at 7-11 when you're drunk, the made-for-tv sequel, and much much more!

    Romeo + Juliet Feb 06, 2015
    Show notes

We all had pretty mixed feelings about Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of Romeo + Juliet when it was released in 1996. Donna initially loved it, but was already fairly lukewarm on it the following year. Carlos always enjoyed the film and still regards it as his favorite cinematic version of the story. Chris expected to adore it, but was surprised to find it borderline unwatchable. None of us had seen it in many, many years and there were a few surprising revelations after this viewing. Topics include: the pretty terrible introductory scene, the pros and cons of casting age-appropriate actors in the title roles, some of the criticisms surrounding this take on Mercutio and why the three of us are totally on board with it, how much of this tragedy can be blamed on Father Lawrence and why he really should have known better, how little screen time Romeo and Juliet actually share, the unbelievable production design, the sluggish second half, and much much more!

Saved by the Bell - Part II Jan 28, 2015
    Show notes

We wrap up our Saved by the Bell discussion by spending some time at Malibu Sands and then taking a closer look at what's arguably the most notorious episode of the entire series. After that we play a round of Who Would You Be and Who Would You F - which includes YOUR responses to which character each of us would be. Topics include: Donna's ill-fated attempt to recreate one of Zack & Stacy's more romantic moments, whether or not Slater is actually a better feminist than Jessie (spoiler alert: he is), how futile it is to try and track Zack & Kelly's relationship, a possible explanation for why the "very special episodes" became so prevalent, Slater's pants, Stacy's tights, Lisa's bra, and much much more!

Saved by the Bell - Part I Jan 23, 2015
    Show notes

Boy oh boy did we all adore Saved by the Bell when we were kids. Donna thought this is exactly what high school was going to be like. Chris and Carlos knew better, but actually loved the show because of how heightened and ridiculous it was. As we got older, it didn't take long to figure out that this series was objectively pretty awful and that most of these kids were terrible people. And yet - we remain incredibly fond of it. Listen in as we attempt to figure out why... Topics include: the show's origins as Good Morning Miss Bliss, the various spin-offs and TV movies that kept the Saved by the Bell brand alive for years after the original series ended, how disturbing it is that no one involved with this seemed to notice that all of these characters were dangerous sociopaths, the murky sense of morality that undermines a lot of the lessons these episodes were trying to teach us, the secret truth about Bayside's miniscule number of students, why the show is at its best when it commits to being a live-action cartoon, and much much more!

    The Net Jan 09, 2015
    Show notes

So this was a first... a movie none of us had ever seen prior to this episode. Donna had been hearing for years that it was completely insane and thought it might be fun to look back at what our perception of the internet was circa 1995. The only problem is that even twenty years ago, no one was taking The Net seriously. It did manage to make a handful of very accurate predictions about where this technology was headed, but for the most part its an aggressive assault on common sense. That's not what made this it such a chore to get through though. It's biggest problem is that it's a thriller that isn't thrilling. It's a boring mess that spends the majority of its running time spinning its wheels.

Topics include: what scared us about the internet when we were kids, certain elements the writers could have borrowed from films like Vertigo or Rear Window that would have made Angela's dilemma more compelling, how a fundamental misunderstanding of Internet 101 completely invalidates what the villains are after here, the importance of a second opinion when it comes to major medical diagnosis, why this group of terrorists feels the need to leave a calling card on their super secret web page, the endless parade of limp and repetitive action scenes, the fact that the bad guys had nothing to fear from Angela until they started chasing her, and much much more!

    Die Hard Dec 22, 2014
    Show notes

We don't even debate whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie. This film and its first sequel are always included in Chris' annual holiday movie marathon and the whole gang thought it would make for an appropriately spirited discussion. So come out to the coast. We'll get together. Have a few laughs. Topics include: the project's unusual origins and how many times it very nearly developed into something else entirely, the way the script skillfully layers in everything we need to know about John & Holly's relationship, how clumsy some of the other exposition is, why Hans Gruber is still the best villain in the franchise, plot holes big enough to drive a certain ambulance through, the use of sidekicks in this film vs the later entries, why the best Die Hard sequel isn't even actually a Die Hard movie, and much much more!

    Steel Magnolias Dec 12, 2014
    Show notes

With all of the superheroes, spaceships, and horror films we've been discussing lately, we decided it was time to shake things up a little. It might be easy to dismiss Steel Magnolias as a chick flick, but Donna makes the case that it's themes of friendship and loss are pretty universal. Chris was expecting a very different movie when he first saw this as a kid, but he wound up liking it anyways - even if he never would have admitted to it at the time. Donna didn't see it until college and it turned her into a sobbing mess. Carlos has always been a little surprised how emotional everyone gets over the final act, but he enjoys the film nonetheless. Topics include: the real life tragedy that inspired the original stage play, who almost played Shelby, the rocky relationship between the cast and their director, misconceptions we had about sex as kids, a simpler (and possibly more effective) version of the pregnancy subplot, the aspects of grief that the film absolutely nails, the rather abrupt ending, and much much more!

    The Rocketeer Nov 28, 2014
    Show notes

There was so much to say about The Rocketeer that we had to bring in a very special guest to help us revisit this one. Dean from The Science Fiction Film Podcast dropped by to share his memories of the movie and his thoughts on it two decades later. Donna and Carlos were pretty hazy on the details of this one, but Chris remembered most of the plot and the one major problem he had with it as a kid. It's still a sticking point for him now, but quibbles aside - there is so much to love about this movie. Topics include: Disney's plan to reinvent the modern blockbuster and how it sort of blew up in their face, the differences between this and Dave Stevens' original graphic novel, James Horner's amazing score, some pretty significant problems with Cliff's character and his journey over the course of the story, Carlos' disappointment that Peevey isn't Albert Einstein, what exactly those Nazis were doing in that forest, who put a flare gun on that zeppelin, and much much more!
