A Very Merry HDYR Holiday Special Dec 22, 2015
    Show notes

Hello-ho-ho and welcome to the HDYR Holiday Special! We decided to break from the formula and devote this episode to answering some listener questions, sharing some of our favorite Christmas memories, and getting all mushy about how wonderful it is being friends with one another. Topics include: the one Christmas present you guys just had to have as kids and whether or not it lived up to the hype, our go-to holiday movies, controversial moments that never made it into the final cut of certain episodes, requested titles we may never cover and the reasons why, what the future holds for this podcast and the three of us, and much much more!

    Gremlins Dec 11, 2015
    Show notes

In the first of two holiday-themed episodes, Kristen & Mike from The Sunnydale Stacks join us for a look back at Joe Dante's 1984 horror/comedy classic Gremlins. For those of us that grew up with this film and its sequel, certain aspects have become somewhat interchangeable over the years - but where as Gremlins 2 has a more farcical sense of humor, the original's is pitch black.

It had been a long time since most of us had seen this one, so it was interesting to see how accurately our memories lined up with what's actually on screen and just how much of this we had completely forgotten. Topics include: some of our your favorite non-traditional Christmas movies, the original (and much darker) version of this story, why Carlos thinks Billy should be a little kid, the insane life cycle of these creatures and the problematic rules they come with, an argument about the infamous Phoebe Cates monologue, why certain supporting characters seemingly disappear, the misguided marketing campaign for the movie, how we all found out there was no Santa Claus, and much much more!

    Crocodile Dundee Nov 27, 2015
    Show notes

This is definitely one of the most dramatic examples so far of there being a huge disparity between the movie we all remembered and the film it actually is. There's no question that Crocodile Dundee remains a very beloved property and that its title character is one of the most iconic from this era. Everyone knows the name and everyone can quote a few of the more famous lines. So all three of us were a little surprised to discover that so many aspects of it felt problematic. This is not the episode we imagined we'd end up with when we picked this one.

Topics include: what playing Crocodile Dundee as a kid might have looked like, the problem with not giving either of your main characters any flaws, how much Chris likes the unconventional structure of the story and why Carlos thinks it should have been split into two films, the way Sue and her boyfriend suddenly become different people in the second half, the fact that even stories with low stakes still need conflict, a lot of pitches for more effective versions of this premise, and much much more!

Rookie of the Year Nov 13, 2015
    Show notes

As soon as our beloved Chicago Cubs found themselves squaring off against the New York Mets, Rookie of the Year was suddenly on everyone's mind again after 20+ years. Unfortunately for us, real life didn't play out exactly the same way as it did in the movie - but then there are a lot of elements to the film you just sorta have to go with.

Topics include: how inept all of us were at sports as kids, the bizarre (and frankly impossible) timeline of this story, some surprisingly mixed feelings about Daniel Stern's character and his decision to take a fairly large role in a movie he was also directing, the conflicting messages we're getting about the final game, and much much more!

    Poltergeist Oct 30, 2015
    Show notes

Carlos and Donna had never seen Poltergeist, but Chris suspected that it would be a perfect pick for this year's Halloween episode. The film's success paved the way for two sequels, a TV series, and a remake - but its real legacy seems to be a curse that supposedly haunted the cast & crew and some controversy surrounding who actually directed it. We get into all of that and more so turn off the lights, grab some candy, and follow the HDYR gang into the light. Topics include: One of Chris' worst Halloweens as a kid, the lighthearted first act and why the film works so much better because of it, the sequences that still creep us out, some stuff that hasn't aged as well, the origins of the Poltergeist curse, why the family stays in the house, what happens to the dog, how much weed Mom & Dad smoked, and much much more!

The Monster Squad Oct 16, 2015
    Show notes

It's so surprising and awesome that The Monster Squad has been one of most requested titles from our listeners. Although the film received a lukewarm response when it was released in the summer of 1987, it quietly amassed a dedicated following in the ensuing years and is now regarded as a bonafide cult hit. Carlos wasn't able to join us for this episode, so Mike from The Sunnydale Stacks sat in to discuss how we all first discovered the movie and how well it's held up over repeated viewings.

Topics include: how licensing issues prevented the filmmakers from using the more traditional cinematic depictions of these monsters and why it actually worked in their favor, the incredible cast of kids they assembled, some questions about why Rudy's hanging around, a more effective way the squad might have been formed, Eugene's allegiance to the confederacy, the pitch-perfect tone, the amazing creature effects, and much much more!

    Twister Oct 02, 2015
    Show notes

By the summer of 1996, the era of high-concept movies where special effects took center stage was in full swing. It was a crowded slate, but the hype surrounding Twister was bolstered by the involvement of Jurassic Park alumni Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton. All three of us were completely blown away (rimshot!) by the film as kids, but there's a whole lot about it that doesn't make much sense now. Topics include: the supposedly troubled production, the incredibly memorable trailer, a clumsy first act that might have benefited from dropping a few of these characters, the over-the-top sound design, whether or not the effects hold up, cell phone reception in the middle of a storm, vindictive tornadoes, the absolutely ludicrous final moments, and much much more!

    Spawn Sep 18, 2015
    Show notes

Spawn's time in the limelight was pretty brief in the grand scheme of things, but for a moment there this character was EVERYWHERE - comic books, cartoons, video games, action figures, trading cards... you name it and there was probably a piece of merchandise with his face on it. A live-action feature film adaptation was inevitable, but instead of being the culmination of Spawn's propulsive popularity, it instead indicated that perhaps this property's glory days were winding down.

There's a lot to discuss here and the HDYR gang does their best to sort through the nonsensical script and scattershot direction in order to figure out how such a straightforward concept could get transformed into something so muddled.

Topics include: Chris and Carlos' memories of the Spawn comic and their initial reactions to the movie, an easy fix that would have helped the filmmakers stretch their modest budget, the problem with giving Al Simmons a moral center before he goes to hell, makingthe costume work on film, the constant and unnecessary narration, Donna's confusion over everybody's motivation, an argument for putting a limit on Spawn's powers, and much much more!

    Dangerous Minds Sep 04, 2015
    Show notes

When Dangerous Minds was released in 1995, we were all too young to realize it was not breaking any new ground. So while it was just the latest entry in a long line of films that utilized the "save our students" story template, it still felt super duper important when we watched as kids. Now that we're all grown up, it's pretty easy to recognize that this is no Lean on Me or Stand & Deliver. At its best, Dangerous Minds is a tone-deaf oversimplification of what the real LouAnne Johnson actually experienced. At its worst, it's an insensitive misfire that betrays its source material and basically turns the whole situation into a cartoon. Topics include: Coolio's hit single "Gangsta's Paradise" and the part it played in keeping Dangerous Minds in the zeitgeist for the past two decades, the fact that Jerry Bruckheimer seems to think he's making To Sir, With Love but probably would have been more at home with something like The Substitute, the actual methods Johnson used to make the curriculum more relevant for her students (spoilers - it wasn't with Bob Dylan lyrics), deleted scenes, awkward endings, why the truth was so much more compelling than this fiction, and much much more!

The Lost Episode Recap Special Aug 21, 2015
    Show notes

Over the course of the two years we've been recording this podcast, there have been a handful of episodes we've never released for one reason or another. If you've heard our Listener Questions episode then you already know the back story on what went wrong with most of them. We've never actually talked about the movies themselves though. So that's what this special is all about! Chris, Donna, and Carlos finally have an opportunity to sum up their thoughts on Clue, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Addams Family, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, RoboCop, Big, and Beetlejuice.
