Harvey Brownstone Interviews Anthony Loder, Son of Legendary Actress and Inventor, Hedy Lamarr Nov 05, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Anthony Loder, Son of Legendary Actress and Inventor, Hedy Lamarr
    About Harvey's guest:
Anthony Loder is the son of one of the most glamorous and fascinating screen goddesses in cinematic history. At one time, she was considered the world’s most beautiful woman: Hedy Lamarr. She lit up the screen in films like “Algiers”, “Boom Town”, “Ziegfeld Girl” and “Samson and Delilah”. But what very few people knew, until her son made a point of bringing worldwide awareness to it, is that Hedy Lamarr was not just an actress. She was a mathematical and scientific genius. At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Anthyle developed a radio guidance system using frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology for Allied torpedoes, intended to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. The technology that she invented is largely responsible for the creation of wireless communications, including cell phones, GPS, Wifi and Bluetooth. She was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014. Our guest produced a fascinating documentary in 2004 called “Calling Hedy Lamarr”, and he also appeared in the 2017 documentary entitled “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story”.
Hedy Lamarr, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was an Austrian-born American film actress and inventor. Her father was born to a Galician Jewish family in Lemberg (now Lviv in Ukraine) and was a successful bank director. Trude, her mother, a pianist and Budapest native, had come from an upper-class Hungarian Jewish family. She had converted to Catholicism and was described as a "practicing Christian" who raised her daughter as a Christian.
Lamarr helped get her mother out of Austria after it had been absorbed by the Third Reich and to the United States, where Gertrude later became an American citizen. She put "Hebrew" as her race on her petition for naturalization, which was a term often used in Europe.
After a brief early film career in Czechoslovakia, including the controversial Ecstasy (1933), to avoid the Nazi persecution of Jews following the Anschluss, she fled from her husband, a wealthy Austrian ammunition manufacturer, and secretly moved to Paris. Traveling to London, she met Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio head Louis B. Mayer, who offered her a movie contract in Hollywood. She became a film star with her performance in Algiers (1938). Her MGM films include Lady of the Tropics (1939), Boom Town (1940), H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941), and White Cargo (1942). Her greatest success was as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's Samson and Delilah (1949).
During World War II, Lamarr learned that radio-controlled torpedoes could easily be jammed and set off course. She thought of creating a frequency-hopping signal that could not be tracked or jammed. She and a friend, composer George Antheil, drafted designs for the frequency-hopping system, which they patented on August 11, 1942.
In 1997, Lamarr received the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award and the Bulbie Gnass Spirit of Achievement Bronze Award, given to individuals whose creative lifetime achievements in the arts, sciences, business, or invention fields have significantly contributed to society.
The principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi. This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Dan Foliart, Film and Television Composer

    About Harvey's guest:

Dan Foliart’s music has been indelibly etched on the landscape of network television. He is serving his fifth term on the ASCAP Board of Directors, currently as the Writer Co-Chairman. He sits as the immediate past- president of the Society of Composers & Lyricists, after serving that organization for five terms over ten year, developing the New York chapter and instigating the Ambassador Program, recognizing excellence in the field of film music.

Included among his recent projects are George Lopez’s Saint George, ABC Family’s successful series, The Secret Life of the American Teenager and the eleven-year run of 7th Heaven, for the WB. Along with Emmy nominations, Foliart has garnered 38 ASCAP Film & Television Awards, including 16 in the ‘Most Performed Theme’ category. Although short lived, the reboot of Roseanne with Dan’s theme and underscore was recently the year’s number one show.

Of the 50-plus series he has composed for, many continue to air both in syndication and internationally. Beginning at Paramount Studios with then partner Howard Pearl, Foliart started an extended run that included such favorites as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Angie, Bosom Buddies, Joanie Loves Chachi, and cable’s first series, Brothers. Other series that he has composed for include Home Improvement, Beverly Hills 90210, 9 to 5, Guns of Paradise, Island Son, Carol & Company, Soul Man, Burke’s Law, Malibu Shores and 8 Simple Rules.

Growing up in Oklahoma City, he was proud to have his symphonic work Oklahoma Trilogy performed as part of the state’s centennial celebration. Currently he is completing a follow-up symphony based on The Trail of Tears. While enrolled at Amherst College, where he received his BA degree, he had the opportunity to write the song score for GD Spradlin’s film The Only Way Home. The songs were co-written with Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame writer Tom Shapiro, with whom he penned over 100 more. He and Tom have recently reunited on a retrospective of their songs. Other works in development include the musicals, “Back in the Game” and “A Lovely Part of Town” with collaborator Rob Dames.

He has served for thirteen years on the ASCAP Foundation Board, ten years on the Television Academy’s Music Peer Committee and sits on the Advisory Board of the Film Music Society. Along with Paul Williams, he served as the ASCAP representative on the MLC Writer Selection committee mandated by the Music Modernization Act. He believes that the relationships that he has nurtured through meetings with members of Congress, as well as friendships that he has fostered with his colleagues here and around the world, will be valuable components that he will continue to bring to the ASCAP Board, whether virtually or face to face. He is honored to have been part of ASCAP’s prestigious We Write the Songs program at the Library of Congress, where he performed his television themes before members of Congress.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Laura Hall, Author of “Affliction: Growing Up with a Closeted Gay Dad” Oct 24, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Laura Hall, Author of “Affliction: Growing Up with a Closeted Gay Dad”

    About Harvey's guest:

Laura Hall was born in a small city on the San Francisco peninsula to a straight mother and a gay father who lived in the shadows. She grew up in the post–World War II era of hopeful optimism and entered her teenage years during the rebellious sixties.

Laura’s father, it turned out, also longed to rebel, although social constriction prevented him from doing so. By the time he came out to her in 1975, she was a twice-divorced, twenty-four-year-old single mother struggling to make sense of how her “perfect” family of origin could have sheltered so many secrets.

Another three decades would pass before Laura would exam her own infidelities, multiple partners, night terrors, and fear of abandonment in light of the double life her father led throughout his sixty-five-year marriage to her mother. Affliction is a tender and frank account of how a father’s secret became his daughter’s inheritance and, ultimately, the path to her own healing.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Dara Horn, Author of “People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present” Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Dara Horn, Author of “People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present”

    About Harvey's guest:

Dara Horn is the award-winning author of six books, including the novels “In the Image” (Norton 2002), “The World to Come” (Norton 2006), “All Other Nights” (Norton 2009), “A Guide for the Perplexed” (Norton 2013), and “Eternal Life” (Norton 2018), and the essay collection “People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present” (Norton 2021).

“People Love Dead Jews: Reports from a Haunted Present” is a startling exploration of how Jewish history is exploited to flatter the living.

Reflecting on subjects as far-flung as the international veneration of Anne Frank, the blockbuster traveling exhibition called “Auschwitz,” the Jewish history of the Chinese city of Harbin, and the little known “righteous Gentile” Varian Fry, Dara Horn challenges us to confront the reasons why there might be so much fascination with Jewish deaths, as emblematic of the worst of evils the world has to offer, and so little respect for Jewish lives, as they continue to unfold in the present.

Horn draws on her own family’s life — trying to explain Shakespeare’s Shylock to a curious 10-year-old, her anger when swastikas are drawn on desks at her children’s school in New Jersey, the profound and essential perspective offered by traditional religious practice, prayer, and study — to assert the vitality, complexity, and depth of this life against an anti-Semitism that, far from being disarmed by the mantra of “Never forget,” is on the rise.

One of Granta magazine’s Best Young American Novelists (2007), she is the recipient of two National Jewish Book Awards, the Edward Lewis Wallant Award, the Harold U. Ribalow Award, and the Reform Judaism Fiction Prize, and she was a finalist for the Wingate Prize, the Simpson Family Literary Prize, and the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. Her books have been selected as New York Times Notable Books, Booklist’s 25 Best Books of the Decade, and San Francisco Chronicle’s Best Books of the Year, and have been translated into eleven languages.

Her nonfiction work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, Smithsonian Magazine, and The Jewish Review of Books, among many other publications, and she is a regular columnist for Tablet Magazine. Horn received her doctorate in comparative literature from Harvard University, studying Yiddish and Hebrew. She has taught courses in these subjects at Sarah Lawrence College and Yeshiva University and held the Gerald Weinstock Visiting Professorship in Jewish Studies at Harvard. She has lectured for audiences in hundreds of venues throughout North America, Israel, and Australia. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and four children.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Tony Mantor, Singer / Songwriter, Musician & Producer Oct 09, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tony Mantor, Singer / Songwriter, Musician & Producer

    About Harvey's guest:

Tony Mantor is an American singer/songwriter, pianist, and producer.

His career spans from the late 70’s, performing as an artist and touring sideman, to the present, consulting and working on shows for legendary performers.

In the studio he has produced both emerging and established artists plus, when time allows, his own personal music.

As an artist Tony had multiple nationwide releases. He charted in U.S. trade magazines, such as Cashbox, and internationally in Europe and the U.K.

This success led him to Nashville. Since that move he has produced and developed many aspiring singers, helping them pursue their musical dreams.

In 2005 his production/development company, Plateau Music, became an independent record label releasing select singers to radio in Country, R&B, AC, pop, and Jazz/Soft Rock.

During the next fifteen years Tony produced 35 nationally charted records… 25 of them reaching the top 40 and several going top 10.

Some other highlights of the past 15 years include:

2005 to 2009: Several successful records in the Country charts with one reaching #21 in MusicRow. It was the highest rated single by an independent label/producer at the time…a record that stood unbroken for 11 years.

2012-2020: He produced and managed legendary R&B singer Jackie Wilson’s son, Bobby Wilson with four top 10 Adult Contemporary hits… the last being a Top 40 Mediabase Hot AC hit in 2019.

2015: His productions reached radio in the U.K. with tremendous success. Since establishing Plateau Music U.K., he has continued releases to radio, which also has created touring opportunities for his artists.

2012-2016: Tony’s artist Sam Austin hit the Top 50 of MusicRow and Billboard country Indicator charts.

2017: He started production on a tribute to Glen Campbell with his daughter Debby Campbell, who performed with Glen for over 24 years on the road.

2018: Tony produced another top 40 Country record in MusicRow with Sam Austin.

2019: He announced signing a production deal with Happy Days star Donny Most, with a single due to radio in 2020.

Tony has won 3 awards in the United Kingdom. One for management and another for his label, Plateau Music in 2019

Tony has been on the Grammy ballot 4 times for producer of the year.

As a producer he has produced songs that have reached the top 40 in the national charts of FMQB AC, MusicRow Country, Billboard Indicator Country, Billboard Indicator Top 40, Mediabase Activator Country, Mediabase Activator Top 40, Hot AC, Billboard Monitored AC, Mediabase Monitored AC.

2018: Tony recorded a CD and hosted a documentary following Tom Cole, a singer who honored his songwriter brother Eugene Cole, who unfortunately lost his life in the line of duty as a Somerset Deputy Sheriff.

Tony is now active in the film world as host of a documentary, currently under production, and a TV show that is under contract to be produced later this year.

He is currently working on his first solo project as an artist since 1993, which was the year his single reached the top 50 in the Cashbox charts.

His current solo project titled “Why Not Me” features a single of the same name which will be released to radio in the U.S. and worldwide. Portions of the receipts from this single will be earmarked for selected charities, to be announced.

Also, in the works is a new touring show.

    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Zarna Garg, Comedian / Award Winning Screenwriter / Producer

    About Harvey's guest:

Proudly representing brown women everywhere, Zarna Garg is a mom and lawyer turned award-winning screenwriter and stand-up comedian, highlighting the immigrant and American experience with her own signature style.

Since the pandemic, she’s brought her comedy shows online, a move which was covered in the New York Times and outdoors to venues including Central Park and the MET. Zarna has taken TikTok by storm, with her comedy videos gaining more than 35 million views and counting!

Zarna performs for sold out audiences at top clubs across the country, and you can find her each month at the famous Caroline’s on Broadway with her second hit show “Sari, Not Sorry,” following her headlining debut, “My American Dream.” She is a featured comic on Kevin Hart’s Lyft Comic Series. She won Best Newcomer at Ladies of Laughter. She is also one of the winners of the #TY100 I Love NYC’s SMB’s 100 Small Business Owners. Zarna was the featured performer for the Outstanding Mother Awards in support of the Save the Children foundation with attendees including Halle Berry, Kate Hudson, Kris Jenner and more.

Her debut romantic comedy screenplay “Rearranged” won the Best Comedy Screenplay Award at the 2019 Austin Film Festival (placing #1 out of 11,000 scripts) and was also a 2019 Academy Nicholl Fellowships Semi-Finalist. The script has been optioned by Marginal Mediaworks.

She is one of a handful of female Indian comedians worldwide, and quite possibly the only one who publicly takes on her mother-in-law. Zarna is a rare voice tackling the type of humor few (if any) other Indian immigrant women have attempted before and represents a demographic with few comedic influences.
