Harvey Brownstone Interviews Julia Stern, Professor and Author of “Bette Davis Black and White” Dec 05, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Julia Stern, Professor and Author of “Bette Davis Black and White”

    About Harvey’s Guest:

Professor Julia Stern is an academic and a scholar who is an expert on the film career of the greatest movie star of them all: Bette Davis. Although Miss Davis received every accolade an actor can get, our guest asserts that Bette Davis has not been adequately recognized for her on-and-off-screen collaborative efforts to combat racism and support the African American community.

In her latest book, entitled “Bette Davis Black and White”, she provides an illuminating exposé of Miss Davis’ little known behind the scenes work, such as supporting and mentoring black actors, desegregating the dance floor of the legendary Hollywood Canteen, collaborating with Hattie McDaniel during the war to entertain black servicemen, and joining several black labour organizations.
Julia is the Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence and Professor of English and American Studies, and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of English at Northwestern University. She’s received numerous awards for her teaching and her writing.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Paul Williams, Legendary Composer, Lyricist, Actor and Author Dec 02, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Paul Williams, Legendary Composer, Lyricist, Actor and Author

    About Harvey’s Guest:

Paul Williams is one of the most beloved and respected music creators in the world today. A lyricist and composer who has won an Oscar Award, three Grammy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, an Ivor Novello International Award, and earned induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, his songs, from “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “You and Me Against the World” to “An Old Fashioned Love Song” and “The Rainbow Connection,” have touched millions of people for generations. As President and Chairman of the Board of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), he is also a leading spokesman for music creators in the digital age.

Williams’ standards have been recorded by such diverse musical icons as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, The Carpenters, Diana Ross, Luther Vandross, Willie Nelson, Gonzo and Kermit The Frog. Although Williams is widely known as an actor in dozens of films and on television, it is his musical legacy that continues to inspire. His songs and scores have received six Oscar, nine Grammy, six Golden Globe and two Emmy nominations. “The Rainbow Connection,” from the children’s classic The Muppet Movie, is one of two Williams’ songs that grace the American Film Institute’s List of Top Movie Songs of All Time; the second, “Evergreen,” is from the award-winning Barbra Streisand/ Kris Kristofferson remake of A Star Is Born. Additional song scores include the cult favorites Phantom of the Paradise and Ishtar, as well as The Muppet Christmas Carol, Bugsy Malone, and Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas, the latter of which has now been adapted for the stage. Paul created the story and wrote the songs for Disney’s Emmy-nominated A Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa and penned the music and lyrics for Garry Marshall’s theatrical sensation Happy Days. His recent work has remained wonderfully diverse, having co-written “Beyond” and “Touch” (which he also performed, receiving a Grammy as Featured Artist) on Daft Punk’s chart-topping, ‘Album of the Year’ Random Access Memories; and writing with Gustavo Santaolalla for the animated film, The Book of Life which received a World Soundtrack Award for their “Apology Song”. They also collaborated on Guillermo del Toro’s stage musical adaptation of Pan’s Labyrinth.

In addition to music creators’ rights, Paul is also passionate about recovery, and works tirelessly to destigmatize alcoholism and addiction. His career, life, and work in recovery have been chronicled in the acclaimed documentary, Paul Williams Still Alive, for which Paul wrote the critically acclaimed title track. Sober 30 years, his humorous observations of life, love, and creativity, augmented by the education and knowledge he gained through his studies and certification from UCLA as a Certified Drug Rehabilitation Counselor, has been shared in a best-selling book co-written by Tracey Jackson, entitled Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life which was featured on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday.

It is the lyrics from Bugsy Malone that aptly sum up his philosophy: “You give a little love and it all comes back to you; You’re gonna’ be remembered for the things that you say and do”. As a devoted husband to writer Mariana Williams and proud father, Paul considers his son Cole, and daughter Sarah, to be his best work.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Nhi Aronheim, Author of “Soles of a Survivor, A Memoir” Nov 26, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Nhi Aronheim, Author of “Soles of a Survivor, A Memoir”

    About Harvey's guest:

    #solesofasurvivor #nhiaronheim

Nhi Aronheim stands at only four feet, nine inches tall, but her story is immense.

Several anthologies including KENTUCKY WOMEN: TWO CENTURIES OF INDOMITABLE SPIRIT AND VISION, and a documentary that aired on PBS, VIETNAM 101, have profiled her harrowing journey as a child refugee who escaped war-torn Vietnam in search of the American Dream.

The soles of her feet still bear the scars of her horrific escape from Vietnam—where she trudged through the jungles of Cambodia as a child with a group of strangers seeking the land of opportunity: America. Her only possessions at the time were two pieces of clothing and a heart filled with hope.

Speaking very little English when Nhi arrived in Kentucky, thanks to the support from her teacher (who became her adoptive mother), Nhi excelled in school and became valedictorian her senior year. She later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Centre College in Danville, and a Master of Science degree in Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Nhi worked for four years as a telecommunications consultant during which time she met and married a Jewish man, and converted to Judaism in 2004. Nhi has two beautiful children who she has raised to embrace Vietnamese and Jewish cultures.

After transitioning to sales and marketing in the mortgage industry—where Nhi worked for over sixteen years—she retired from the mortgage industry as a marketing specialist at the age of forty-one to to begin her next life adventure. Since then, she has been a mediator and interpreter. She also volunteers her time as a mediator for courts and the Better Business Bureau as well as being an active member of Toastmasters.

In 2013, Nhi earned a Black Belt in Taekwondo, fulfilling a promise she made to her birth mom—who wanted Nhi to learn karate before she left Vietnam—in the event she came under attack during her escape, she could protect herself.

Having come full circle from prosperity to poverty and back, Nhi hopes to encourage others to believe that in spite of overwhelming odds, all things are possible if one has an intense desire, focused energy, and the audacity to grasp presented opportunities.

Her story isn’t just another inspirational survival story, however. It’s about the lessons she’s learned about humanity, diversity, and unconditional love since arriving in the United States. After she met her Jewish beau, they married and she now has a deeper appreciation for the parallels between the Jewish and Vietnamese cultures, and others.

Her website is an invitation, from her heart to yours.

There is light at the end of every tunnel.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Bruria Cooperman, Author of “For THIS I Survived? Children of Survivors Beyond the Trauma” Nov 24, 2021
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Bruria Cooperman, Author of “For THIS I Survived? Children of Survivors Beyond the Trauma”

    About Harvey's guest:

Her kindergarten teacher told her mother that she does not stop talking. There is nothing she keeps secret. (So be careful.) And nothing has changed. She still talks too much and she still loves to entertain people with her stories.

Various people have told her she should be on stage, she should do comedy, she should … Whatever it was, it was all true and perhaps her life would have gone in a different direction but she never stood still long enough. There was always one more adventure to try.

Her friends teased her because she would never hang up her pictures. They stayed on the floor, leaning against the wall, waiting to be packed up, just in case she needed a quick exit. Commitment for her was tough.

Her wanderings had begun early. The family immigrated to Canada in 1954, moving to Hamilton where she was given the name Brenda. No one could even pronounce her name nor would they try. That was the beginning of the countdown to get out of there.

She always knew that New York was the only place to be. At her first opportunity, she was out of there. First college then grad school at NYU. She returned to Toronto where she dabbled in film production – an iffy career that gave you status but little remuneration. With her tastes and dreams, teacher’s college could fill in the gaps and give her the summers off.

From the beginning of September to the end of June, she ‘pretended’ to be normal with a normal job – teaching high school. But it was always about the next adventure and she needed money for that. When July 1st came around, she was on a plane going somewhere. Wanderings around England, France and Switzerland. A semester in Sienna — with the Paleo a highlight. Italy was her favourite. If people asked her brother, his answer was always the same. “Still peripatetic.”

Still feeling the wanderlust, Japan was the next stop on her life journey. Six years living like a queen but even that began to wane.

As many times before, she returned to Canada. This time she decided it was time to get married. (She came to everything late!) On a dare, she placed an ad in The Globe and Mail. Earl Cooperman, of Ottawa, Canada, answered and it was a done deal, instantaneously. She moved to the nation’s capital where she shared a house with a husband, a teenager, two goldfish, a hamster and a dog named Kafka. After staring at the walls and missing her friends and family, she went back to school and received a doctorate at the University of Ottawa.

She now lives in Toronto with her husband and a mutt called Izzy, close to their three children, their spouses and eight grandchildren. It was time to write ‘the book’. Twenty years later but that’s par for the course. She does public speaking and is available to anyone who will listen. She loves to talk and make people laugh!

In her spare time, Bruria loves to work with paper in all its forms. Please check her Instagram feed to see her eclectic art that may be of interest to you!
