    Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide

Everyone sees a woman who has it together. What they don’t see is everything she’s holding in her head, running the house, the money, supporting everyone around her, with no instruction manual for any of it.
The Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide is for the woman who’s mistaken exhaustion for competence long enough to know busy isn’t the same as steady.
Each episode highlights experts in honest conversations about what actually runs a life: health, home, money, relationships, identity. The goal isn’t one more thing to manage. It’s trading the white-knuckling for a little more ease.

Common Myths about Kidney Donation Mar 15, 2023
    Show notes

There’s a chance at this point of your life, you might know someone with kidney disease, maybe someone who has needed a kidney transplant — or maybe you even someone who has made the decision to donate their kidney.
March is National Kidney Month. Last week, I introduced you to Kari Kirkland, a living kidney donor who not only made that incredibly courageous decision to donate her kidney to a friendly acquaintance, but who just last week climbed Mt Kilimanjaro to spread awareness, reaching the summit on World Kidney Day.

This week is the second episode in our two-part series. I speak with Dr Martha Pavlakis, the medical director of kidney and pancreas transplantation at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. In just an hour of your life, Dr Pavlakis will help us all understand kidney transplants and donations in a whole new way, as she busts some very common myths about the process that people continue to spread every day.
About: Dr. Martha Pavlakis is the medical director of kidney and pancreas transplantation at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where she has held that position since 1999. She is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Co-director of the BIDMC Kidney Transplant Fellowship. Dr. Pavlakis has written and spoken extensively about kidney and pancreas transplantation and is the current Chair of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Kidney Committee. She has led the OPTN effort to eliminate the use of race in eGFR formulas used for listing patients for kidney transplantation and the current restorative justice project to award more wait time to Black and African American transplant candidates whose wait time was impacted by the race variable. She also leads the development of a continuous distribution system for kidney transplant allocation. She is a former chair of the education committee for the American Society of Transplantation (AST) and on the IDEAL committee (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access to Life).

One Woman's Story of Courage Mar 07, 2023
    Show notes

While you’re listening to this episode, there’s a good chance today’s guest, Kari Kirkland, is getting close to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro — highest mountain in the world, standing at 19,341 feet. She’s joining dozens of others, some also kidney donors, organ recipients and advocates to bring awareness to the importance of living organ donation. The group is expected to reach the top on March 9, 2023, also known as World Kidney Day.

This episode is part of a series during March which National Kidney Month, a topic that’s very personal to me. My middle son is 17 years old and in the process of being added to the kidney transplant list, something that surprised us, and yet has been a long time coming. Since the moment we were told this was necessary, I’ve spent hours reading and researching, and have learned so much about not only what he’ll have to go through, but what being a kidney donor looks like, and what it may entail. And I have to tell you, it’s eye opening.
Approximately 100,000 people are on the kidney transplant list, 13 die each day waiting for an organ. Knowledge is power and when we’re educated, it not only helps decrease the amount of medical disinformation that’s out there in the world, but we can best support the donors and recipients in our lives, relatives, friends, co-workers and community members in a more impactful way. And there’s nothing more grown-ass than that.
Guest: Kari Kirkland is a living kidney donor who's lived a life of adventure -- artist, performer, wedding / event planner, private chef, flying trapeze artist and coach, Ironman triathlete... She's lived in 4 countries on 3 continents, and has traveled the world. Now she's climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro to bring awareness to living donation, reaching the summit on World Kidney Day on March 9, 2023. "This climb presents the opportunity to realize that even as a living organ donor, we can still accomplish incredible physical and mental feats! I look forward to watching the sunrise on the top of Kili, surrounded by living donors and advocates, and being a strong example of what is possible after living organ donation."

When You Find Yourself at the End of Your Marriage Feb 28, 2023
    Show notes

Jessica Ashley is a Certified Divorce Coach who helps women thrive through transitions with grace, creativity, and maybe some cussing. On TikTok and Instagram, Jessica posts videos daily to a rapidly growing audience of women seeking community and clarity. But she’s also getting some unwanted attention from an extremely opinionated and outspoken political commentator who recently blasted Jessica on his YouTube page, followed by millions, “canceling” her and garnering thousands of comments, which in turn encouraged some of those followers to harass her online through her social channels and website.

You don’t have to be divorced or even considering it to appreciate that there are men out there trying to silence women from sharing their personal experiences and using those experiences to help others — and make a living. But we are grown-ass women who will not be silenced. In fact, it’s the reason I chose to invite Jessica here today — to give her a platform for sharing her story, and to support her in sharing her voice, which in turn could support you in using your own.

This Episode Could Save Your Life Feb 07, 2023
    Show notes

Why are so many women misinformed when it comes to heart disease? According to the CDC, about 1 in 16 women age 20 and older have coronary heart disease, and about 1 in every 5 female deaths are heart related. It is the leading killer of women in the United States and globally. But even today, and despite an increase in awareness, only about half of women recognize that heart disease is their number 1 killer.

February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness of cardiovascular health. If we can make Heart Month half as popular as Breast Cancer Awareness month, I think we might just save some lives.

Guest: Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, FASPC, FESC is the President of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology and a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, where she is a professor of cardiology and the director of prevention, the associate director of the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center and holds the Anita Dann Friedman Endowed Chair in Women’s Cardiovascular Medicine and Research. She was formerly the inaugural Chief of Cardiology at the University of Arizona. She is the author of the best-seller, “Saving Women’s Hearts”. She served as the chair of the national chest pain guidelines that were released in late 2021.
Her exceptional commitment to the study of women and cardiac diseases has won her numerous awards and distinctions, including being named by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of Chicago’s Top 40 under 40. In 2011, she received the first CREDO (Coalition to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Cardiovascular Outcomes) Award from the American College of Cardiology that was given to honor her contributions to improve cardiovascular healthcare of women patients. In 2012, she was awarded the National Red Dress Award for her efforts in raising awareness of heart disease in women and advancing research in this field. In 2019, she was chosen as the most influential woman in Arizona and received the 2019 American College of Cardiology’s Bernadine Healy Award for her leadership and accomplishment in the field of cardiovascular disease in women.
She is the principal investigator of the St. James Women Take Heart Project, a study examining cardiac risk factors in women, which set standards for women’s fitness levels and heart rate response to exercise in women. She also is a co-investigator on the Women Ischemic Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) and previously served as a co-investigator on the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI). She has published articles in peer-reviewed publications, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). She has also been featured on Oprah.
Dr. Gulati is Canadian and completed medical school at the University of Toronto, Canada. She went on to complete her internship, residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Chicago. She received a Masters’ in Science at the University of Chicago and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the American Society for Preventive Cardiology & the European Society of Cardiology. She is board certified in cardiovascular disease.

Full disclosure, I am a new member of her community. We’ll talk about the community — I’ll share a link to her community as well as her newest workshop, but this is not a sales pitch. This is meant to be the conversation that after you hear it, you take even greater action toward your health - however that looks for you.

    • This is not an overhaul-your-life overnight challenge.
    • This is not a detox or a list of rules and regulations to follow.

The Secret to Staying Accountable Jan 24, 2023
    Show notes

If you've been waiting for a new episode of TGAWG, this is the one to hear! In October of 2021, I attended She Podcasts Live, a conference for women and non-binary podcasters. At that event, I ran into a couple of women I knew through work we had done with Elsie Escobar, one of the She Podcast founders. They were sitting around a table outside the pool area and immediately, we just started talking about the podcasting industry and creativity and a variety of other professional and personal topics.
15 months later, we're still having conversations sparked by that weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona. Jen Edds and Marion Abrams have become friends, confidants, creative sounding boards, truth tellers... They've brought so much to my life. And my favorite part? They're not afraid to hold me accountable.
That is one of the themes for 2023 for me -- personal accountability, something I used to struggle with. BTW If this is something you struggle with, I am working on creating a small accountability group in the coming weeks. Email me if you want to learn more!
    Guests:
Jen Edds is an energetic keynote speaker that delivers a memorable message using songs instead of slides to educate and entertain audiences. What else would you expect from a Gen Xer raised on School House Rock and VH1 Storytellers? When Jen isn’t speaking, you can find her working as a podcast consultant and producer - helping others share their voices and big ideas with the world. Jen hosts The Brassy Broadcast and also loves practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu and podcasting about it with her coach on the Beauty and the Gi podcast. You can tune in wherever you listen to podcasts.
Marion Abrams is a podcasting producer & consultant with deep experience in podcasting and content creation. She built Spartan's podcast from 0 to over 40 million views & downloads. She's worked on a range of projects from social media advisor on a gubernatorial campaign, to creating the documentary film "Flood Bound", to directing TV ads for Vermont Lottery. On her own podcast "Grounded Content" she explores what drives customer actions, and where the lines are between persuasion and manipulation. For 30 years Marion has helped businesses, organizations and individuals clearly convey their message. Marion is also the official podcasting coach for Hubspot's creator program, and helps other thought leaders, business leaders, and podcast hosts to design and elevate their podcast presence.

    Welcome to 2023, Grown-Ass Woman! Jan 10, 2023
    Show notes

Hey there! I’m Jackie, host of The Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide. I created this podcast to support all women in living as their most badass, grown-ass selves. Like many other women, I have had periods of time where I would live by default. Avoid the tough choices — hide from taking personal responsibility. But what I’ve learned is that is definitely not the path for me.

I was craving growth, expansion, confidence, connection. I wanted to show up like the grown-ass woman I knew I could be.

    • A grown-ass woman takes responsibility for herself and her actions
    • She handles her own stuff
    • Sure she may be kind and caring and nurturing and all that, but it’s not at her own expense.

The Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide is a collection of candid conversations focused on three areas — health, wealth and work. You’ll hear from women doing grown-ass things. Living grown-ass lives. And occasionally, you’ll get an episode with just me, sharing some of my own personal grown-ass lessons.

Being a grown-ass woman is a practice. It’s work in progress. It’s a movement. And it’s so much more rewarding when we share it together. Because when one woman lives her most grown-ass life, it creates a ripple effect and we all benefit.

Hit favorite or follow on your favorite podcast app and let’s make 2023 our most grown-ass year yet -- together!

The Grown-Ass Woman’s Guide will be back soon with all new episodes! Until then, enjoy this final “Best of” episode created just for you.
There was a time when rocking the latest trends meant fashion or beauty. But for Grown-Ass Women, the latest trends are focused on self care and personal development. For once in my life, I can actually be trendy. Listening to our own voices — and not the opinions of others requires a level of quiet and courage that more and more women are committed to reaching. On today’s episode, executive coach, communications leader and podcaster, Lara Dalch, shares tools for discovering what we really want by listening more than pushing.
