Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 067.
“I can barely manage my two children; how do you manage EIGHT?” is a question I hear quite often. During last week’s podcast episode I talked about how Jim and I intentionally parent our children. We try to spend more time as proactive parents than we do as reactive parents.

During this episode, I am joined by Kara Durbin, author of Parenting With Scripture*. We discuss how we use Bible verses as we train and raise our children. We share some of our favorite verses and give examples of what that looks like in daily life.

How to Parent Intentionally Mar 20, 2014
    Show notes

Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 066.
If you imagine that parenting styles form a spectrum, with reactive parenting on one end and proactive parenting on the other, you can think about where you usually reside.

    parent intentionally_blog_1

To intentionally parent means that you spend more time being proactive and learning how to move away from reactive parenting. During this podcast episode, I discuss the differences between proactive and reactive parenting styles. I also share seven principles that Jim and I use in parenting our children.

It’s important to understand your own parenting style. Reactive parents normally wait for their child to act before they react. Proactive parents normally act, and expect their children to react. By it’s very nature, reactive parenting tends to focus more on the negative behaviors of your children and how to discourage them. Whereas proactive parenting focuses on encouraging the positive behaviors of your children.

Proactive parents aren’t perfect. And children of proactive parents aren’t perfect. But you’ll find a lot more joy in your parenting once you are able to become more intentional and focused on the positive behavior you wish to develop in your children, as opposed to being focused on disciplining the negative behavior.

    7 Principles of Proactive Parents

    1. Proactive parents want their children’s hearts, not just their outward behavior.
    2. Proactive parents take into account their children’s strengths and weaknesses.
    3. Proactive parents train their children ahead of time how to behave.
    4. Proactive parents set house rules and consequences.
    5. Proactive parents are consistent with consequences.
    6. Proactive parents spend more time encouraging positive behaviors than disciplining negative ones.
    7. Proactive parents ensure they are meeting their children’s needs.

What kind of parent are you?

How To Stop Yelling at Your Children II Mar 13, 2014
    Show notes

Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 065.
I don’t know of any mom who wants to yell at her children. Yet so many moms are struggling with high stress levels. It often doesn’t take much to “push them over the edge” and they find themselves yelling at their children regularly. So how do you stop this cycle?

    DSC_0179_blog

This is the second part of my interview with the Orange Rhino mom. Two years ago, she decided she wanted to completely stop yelling at her children. But unlike most moms, she actually followed through on her desire. She set herself a challenge to go 365 days without yelling at her children. And then she started a blog to hold herself accountable.

If yelling is something you struggle with, you’ll find some great encouragement and ideas on how to actually make the change so you can “yell less and love more” during this podcast episode.

Do you yell at your children? Regularly? Does it bother you that your children don’t listen to what you have to say unless you’re yelling at them? Is yelling at your kids something you’re secretly ashamed of?

Do Your Children Feel Loved? II Feb 27, 2014
    Show notes

Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 063.
I don’t doubt that you love your child tremendously. But if your child isn’t FEELING loved, then the fact that you love them isn’t enough. Your child needs to FEEL that you love them so they can grow into emotionally healthy adults.

    Hewitt

The best way to insure that your child is feeling loved is to express your love to them using all five of the love languages.

The five love languages are – Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. You can find out more about them in the book The 5 Love Languages of Children* by Gary Chapman. The book also contains a series of questions that can help you discover your child’s dominant love language.

During the first part of this podcast series, I discussed the first two love languages – Words of Affirmation and Quality Time. During this episode, I cover the remaining languages – Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch.

You may be more comfortable with just one of these languages (probably your dominant one). But you neeed to show your family love in all of the love languages, not just your preferred language. By expressing your love with all of the love languages, you will help your children grow into adults who can show love in all of the love languages. That is important for healthy adult relationships.

And if you use all of the languages, while focusing on your child’s dominant love language, you will definitely make your child feel loved.

Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 062.
I love my children. And I’m sure that you love yours. But do you show your kids love in a way that they can understand? Do they actually feel like you love them?

    DSC_1233

During this podcast episode I discuss the concept of love languages from the book The 5 Love Languages* by Gary Chapman.

The book really made an impact on me when I read it years ago and I highly recommend it. I learned that it doesn’t matter how much I love my children if I don’t express it in a way that is meaningful to them.

During the first part of this podcast series, I discuss the first two love languages – Words of Affirmation and Quality Time. You’ll find out which Jonas children are dominant in these love languages and how I make sure that I am showing them love in a way that matters to them.

Please join me next week as I finish the discussion on love languages by discussing the remaining languages – Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. I’ll also talk about how you can learn which love language is dominant for the members of your family.

    Don’t Wish Away Today Feb 13, 2014
    Show notes

Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 061.
It is so tempting to look at the difficulties of our lives at this very moment, and to wish for them to be over. Or to be excited about the next thing that is happening in our lives.

    dont-wish-away-today_blog

And while it’s great to be excited and plan for the future, we have to be careful to not wish away today. Despite the difficulties, we need to fully engage in every phase of our life.

Can you relate to any of these comments?

I’m 38 weeks pregnant. In some ways I’m ready to have this birth over and a baby in arms. In others, I have so much to do and I know time with my two girls will never be quite the same again. But I don’t feel like doing much right now!
    – Andrea

Oh my gosh, PJ. I really struggle with this. I have two little ones under 3 and I just want to be done with diapers and crying and the little one not walking or talking… I know I need to cherish this time, but it’s so hard when I’m SO TIRED! (And when I usually have poop on me, LOL!)
    – Dana

I have been wishing time away for two reasons…One, I’m 39 weeks pregnant, and I just want my baby to get here! Also, the winter thing. I am so done with snow, ice and freezing temps. I want green grass and sunshine!
    – Jenna

I spent two years wishing time away. My husband was waiting for an organ transplant. When that day finally arrived I decided that I would no longer wish time away and enjoy EVERY day. That was 15 years ago. We thank God and his donor family for giving this precious gift.
    – Norine

During this episode, I share some of my struggles in this area and share some strategies to help you not wish away what you’re currently dealing with. My hope is that after listening to this podcast, you can find yourself relating more to these comments:

You know, I would find myself wishing it was the weekend etc… But then I realized I was wishing my life away and couldn’t reclaim those moments past. So I have been trying to ‘Live the moment’ so to speak, hard to do in a culture that rehashes past news event over and over and places such large emphasis on planning every moment of the future.
    – Susan

No, I am really working on living and loving the moment of time I am currently in. It has made winter much prettier to me and more enjoyable. I should have done this long ago.
    – Maureen

How To Create a Strong Family Unit Jan 23, 2014
    Show notes

Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 058.
For Jim and I, having a strong family unit is a very important goal. I have always wanted my children to be each other’s best friends, which is one of the reasons we had them so close together.

    family portrait_level balance_12_blog

I also know that Jim and I are not going to live forever. Some day my children are going to be grown adults without me there to unite them. The relationships they have with each other matter to me and it’s our goal to strengthen family bonds now, so that the children can always count on each other.

During this episode, I discuss why having a strong family unit is important and I give you ten steps to strengthening your family. Developing a strong family does take time, but it is an investment that is worth it! You’ll also get to hear Emery’s opinion on our family as he joins me to answer some questions.

    Listener Questions

Amie: Should you require your children to go to every game/event of their siblings? Some of these seasons are really long!

Amie: Should friends be included/allowed at an already planned Family Night?
