    GM Word of the Week

You can’t spell Game Master without “pretentious.” Well, you can, actually. But let’s pretend you can’t so I can make a point. My point is a good Game Master needs a lot of big, fancy words at their disposal to make their flavor text as confusing as possible. Oops. I mean engaging, not confusing. Thieves Tools Jun 25, 2016
    Show notes

What is it that the crafty rogue carries around in her thieves toolkit that makes her so adept at opening locks? And what is it about locks in D&D that we sort of get wrong most of the time? This episode takes you on a historical tour of locks and means of opening them and shows you just why it is that dungeons aren’t nearly as hard to get around in as you think they are.

    Tinder Box Jun 18, 2016
    Show notes

Let us spark your imagination with a science based discussion of the fundamentals of combustion and the lowly, humble tinderbox. Because wherever discerning adventures go, the only thing they want to know is how to make the pathway show in the growing dark.

    Ring Jun 11, 2016
    Show notes

Let us consider the small things. The odds and ends that adventurers pick up and carry around, perhaps without even realizing their significance. And let’s start with the ring. We should warn you, we cover bad riddles, Phil and Dixie, the French, and even some German opera. So be prepared.

City of Brass Jun 04, 2016
    Show notes

Let’s turn our gaze to the Inner Planes for this one, to one place in particular, The City of Brass. The grand tour takes us to the distant past, the not so distant 90s, and on to what may well be the most horrifying experience ever had by mankind. And a lot of it involves the color blue.

    Styx May 21, 2016
    Show notes

We know oh-so-much about the river Styx and it’s role in both D&D and classical mythology. At least, we think we do. I’m sure you could rattle off all sort of facts about the Styx. Sadly, a bunch of that might be wrong. But it’s okay, we’ll walk you through it, and along the way we’ll even come out of the closet. Well, sort of. There’s some radio involved.

    Yggdrasil May 14, 2016
    Show notes

Let’s travel through some Norse mythology on our way to some D&D mythology. We start with a Barbarian looking for Valhalla, stop by Odin to find out about lost eyes, and wind up talking about magic honey from the sky. Sounds good, right?

    Cosmos May 07, 2016
    Show notes

We talk about literally everything in this episode. So much stuff that only one word can adequately describe it all. But it all comes together really well. Come join us as we travel the Cosmos.

    Oghma Apr 30, 2016
    Show notes

Building entire campaign settings is a lot of hard work. There’s so much to do, from setting the basic assumptions to building out the dieties, it can get overwhelming for both players and GMs. Which is why, sometimes, strange connections to the real world creep in. And none is more strange and complicated than the appearance of Oghma in the Forgotten Realms. And what we learn about Oghma and his place in the Forgotten Realms and D&D is only a small reflection of what really happened with Oghma in the real world. It’s a fascinating and complex journey with many sidetracks. But when you understand the lessons of Oghma, you understand an important lesson about building worlds.

    Tiamat Apr 23, 2016
    Show notes

Obviously, once you bring Bahamut in, you must also consider Tiamat. But her history is even more complicated than his. And goes much further back. To some of the earliest writings we know about. Plus, there’s that cartoon. And those ghosts.

    Bahamut Apr 16, 2016
    Show notes

When we talk about dragons, and we do around here, talk often turns to the best dragon to ever have entered the Dungeons and Dragons pantheon. Bahamut, the king of the dragons. Benefactor of the metallics. And he’s got a long history within D&D to discuss. But, as so often turns out in these things, there something fishy going on.
