    GM Word of the Week

You can’t spell Game Master without “pretentious.” Well, you can, actually. But let’s pretend you can’t so I can make a point. My point is a good Game Master needs a lot of big, fancy words at their disposal to make their flavor text as confusing as possible. Oops. I mean engaging, not confusing. Monastery Dec 30, 2016
    Show notes

When you talk about the Monastery, you have to acknowledge that, by and large, there are basically two different types, the Western European type and the Eastern Asian type. The problem is, the things that are inside them? The Monks? They're all basically the same. "How can this be?" you ask? Easy, a monk is a monk is a monk. Look, we'll explain better when you listen. Just know that this is so and remember, when it comes to the Monk in Dungeons and Dragons, you're better off watching a 1985 action film starring Fred Ward for your inspiration.

    Saint Dec 23, 2016
    Show notes

Welcome to this holiday edition of the show. It's important to know that, even in D&D, saints play an important role. Or one saint, at least. However, did you know that not one, not two, but three real-world saints can be connected directly to Dungeons and Dragons? And it's not that hard to do. Along the way, we'll learn all about the saint who gave us a version of the jolly old fat man himself, solve a murder, and slap some folks around. Enjoy the show, and happy holidays.

Wattle and Daub Dec 16, 2016
    Show notes

When you want to explain what your basic medieval peasant or surf lived in, many people assume they already know. They've seen it at least, in certain kinds of movies, surely. But, if we've learned nothing else from GM Word of the Week, what we think we know often turns out not to be so. And so, we must explain that very few peasants lived in anything that might be described as wattle and daub. And, if you want to know what wattle and daub is, this is the episode for you. But be prepared for something of an education.

    Website Dec 09, 2016
    Show notes

It begins with a man who is so forgetful he needs a big solution and he needs it fast. Because he is a nuclear physicist, and forgetting isn’t good. But I promise you, it ends in cats. And a small announcement.

    Shrine Dec 02, 2016
    Show notes

Do you know the difference between a shrine and a temple? Well, you soon will. Plus, a brief discussion of sailing terms, sorting out theisms, and some discussion of philosophy. This must be GM Word of the Week.

    Lost Episode 2 Nov 25, 2016
    Show notes

Another selection of items from the cutting room floor featuring several bits we just didn’t have room for in the regular shows. Learn about glow worms, Jacks, and how to not die in the desert. Plus a lot more in this episode.

    Speleothem Nov 18, 2016
    Show notes

Whether they’re just hanging around or standing up straight, Speleothem are some of the most interesting things around. From humble beginnings come great things. None more so than the sorts of things you find in caves.

    Ignus Fatuus Nov 11, 2016
    Show notes

Join us as we push back the layers of muck and mire and mud and return to our series on Biomes. And we’ve got a doozy for you as it dives in, crosses the pond, and lights the way for you. Possibly these are good things.

    Vampire Oct 28, 2016
    Show notes

This is not a Halloween special. No, sir. We just need to mention a few things about a certain set of monsters that people take a greater interest in this time of year. More importantly, it behooves us to set the record straight about one or two little things that people frequently get wrong. Remember to bring the garlic.

    Lemming Oct 21, 2016
    Show notes

Let’s take the plunge with lemmings. Not really, of course. I mean, we all know THAT story. But, while we’re at it, let’s also talk about tundra and discover some things about specific kinds of plants. And finally get down to the real truth of those lemmings and that film.
