Would You Rather Trade Jaylen Brown or Fire Brad Stevens? May 07, 2021
    Show notes

Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman convene on the Celtics and ask whether or not the team needs to avoid the play in tournament, and what would qualify as a success or failure this season. If the season ends as a failure, Goodman stood by his take that something has to change, either moving on from Brad Stevens or a core player like Jaylen Brown in search of an upgrade. He said a player like Bradley Beal would fit better with Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker. They also talked about the rise of Aaron Nesmith and the significance of Jayson Tatum's 60 points game.

The Celtics blew out the Magic wire-to-wire as Kemba Walker thrived in his return following a four-game absence with an oblique strain, finishing where he left off with 32 points on 11-of-17. Payton Pritchard continued his 10-game run of shooting just under 50% from three, with 14 points. Marcus Smart dished nine assists after getting ejected in Sunday's loss vs the Trail Blazers, while Magic addition Moe Wagner failed to get any significant revenge against his old team. Evan Fournier, playing in Orlando for the first time as a visitor, scored 18 points on 8-of-14 riding off eight early Magic turnovers. The Celtics tied the Heat for the sixth seed ahead of their series beginning this weekend.

Aaron Nesmith Exclusive Interview May 04, 2021
    Show notes

Aaron Nesmith, the newest member of the New Balance family, joined John Zannis and Bobby Manning on the Garden Report Celtics Post Game Show to talk about the biggest week of his NBA career with big performances against the Hornets, Spurs and Trail Blazers where he averaged 58% from three.

His shot has arrived, but when it didn't Nesmith earned minutes earlier this season by reshaping his game and proving to Brad Stevens that he can contribute on defense, in rebounding and by chasing loose balls.

That was a slight adjustment, he told the Garden Report, that involved learning to fall correctly, take a back seat during his DNP games and figuring out what is needed. Nesmith also discussed the leadership of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, what it's like to be the locker room this season and his coaching relationship with Stevens.

Nesmith is working on his own design for New Balance as the newest member of their brand endorsement, while also participating in the company's partnership with the Celtics on social justice and inclusion.

The Blazers won 129-119, separating late on a pair of CJ McCollum and Carmelo Anthony breakout threes after the referees ejected Marcus Smart following a collision with Jusuf Nurkic where they deemed he hit Nurkic in the groin. Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum collided after the threes and twisted each other's ankles, sending both to the locker room in a scary final moment with the game out of reach. Evan Fournier and Aaron Nesmith hit nearly all their shots, but Tatum cooled off following a 24-point first half and both Brown, Smart struggled from the field as Boston turned the ball over 16 times and allowed the Blazers to shoot 50% from the field and from three.

Jayson Tatum Scores 60, Celtics come back down 32 to beat Spurs May 01, 2021
    Show notes

The Celtics made a miraculous 32-point comeback vs the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night, winning 143-140. Jayson Tatum led the way with a career-high 60 points. This effort was also good enough to tie Larry Bird's franchise record for most points scored in a single game.

The Garden Report reacts to this historical performance, as well as the team's comeback. Tatum is one of only three players in NBA history to score 60 points with no turnovers. The crew breakdown how important this comeback was for the team's season, and just how impressed they are with Tatum. Tatum was the only Celtic who could get things going early on, scoring 14 of the team's 16 first-quarter points. He also added eight rebounds and five assists to go along with his point total. He shot 20-37 from the field and 5-7 from three. Tatum also managed to shot 15-17 from the free throw line.

The Celtics bounced back with a career night from Aaron Nesmith in a game where Marcus Smart was suspended hours before tip-off for his altercation with an official during a disastrous loss vs the Thunder. Jaylen Brown exploded in the first quarter by hitting 8-of-11 and finished with 38 points for the second consecutive game. The Garden Report reacted to a bounce back win, the ability of Brown to lead consistently stay involved and the Smart suspension, before Bobby Manning announced a big guest on Dome Theory.

The Thunder, who had lost 14 straight games, led throughout vs the Celtics and by as many as 11 points with two minutes remaining in the fourth as Ty Jerome scored 15 points in a strong fourth quarter, Darius Bazley flushed a clutch dunk and a Boston comeback spurred by three late steals did not reach the finish line. It marked rock bottom and sunk the Celtics to three straight losses with Kemba Walker expected out until the weekend, Robert Williams still out indefinitely and Evan Fournier continuing to do little through a pos-COVID fog with only four baskets in three games since his return.

The Hornets struck early and led throughout, blowing out the Celtics by getting out in transition, attacking the rim and going small to decimate Boston's bigger lineups. They dished 39 assists in one of the best passing efforts of the past 25 years. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown committed eight turnovers, including Tatum's worst of the season as he threw the ball right to a charging Terry Rozier in the opening minutes to allow a layup. Evan Fournier missed every shot again. Tristan Thompson struggled. Kemba Walker got hurt, before returning minutes later, in an odd Sunday game where Boston again showed little life. Is this team bound to keep reverting to this?

The Celtics turned the ball over 19 times, surrendered an early lead and struggled to stave off Nets runs throughout as they fell behind by 17, surrendered 32 points and a handful of late miscues after rallying to within three points late cost Boston the opportunity to beat a Brooklyn team atop the east missing Kevin Durant and James Harden. Jayson Tatum turned the ball over five times while scoring 38 points, including two late miscues. Marcus Smart struggled in the first half then salvaged his game with a trio of shots in the paint that pulled Boston close after halftime. A barrage of young players with Kemba Walker and Jaylen Brown out failed to impact the game, while Bruce Brown, Jeff Green and Joe Harris secured victory for the Nets handily.

Kemba Walker had his best game of the season and one of his best with the Celtics, torching the Suns for 10 points in the first six minutes and hitting his first six field goals on the way to a 32 point, 11-of-17 performance from the field that led Boston past Phoenix 99-86 with relative ease. Jayson Tatum struggled again, shooting 3-of-17, but he made up for it on the boards, in the passing game and collectively on the defensive end with his teammates in holding a top-six offense to 86 points while shutting down Devin Booker for 15, as he fouled out midway through the fourth quarter largely on charges. Romeo Langford got the spot start with Jaylen Brown down with shoulder pain, while Robert Williams III missed his fourth game in a row amid growing concern about his knee inflammation. Late in the show, the Celtics and our show received news of Terrence Clarke dying in LA at 19, a close friend of various Celtics, a Boston native and 2021 NBA Draft prospect.
