019: Boston Celtics vs Detroit Pistons: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Jan 07, 2016
    Show notes

BOSTON – The Celtics and Pistons lived and died at the free throw line Wednesday night. But it was the Celtics who missed the crucial free throws that cost them the game. They fell to Reggie Jackson’s 24 points as the Pistons won 99-94.

The third quarter was marred by a slew of foul calls early on that stunted the offensive pace. While many of the calls on both ends were questionable, it led to Andre Drummond hitting the bench after Stevens successfully implemented the Hack-a-Dre gameplan.

Drummond made some big plays to help Detroit come back in the fourth, but he watched the closing minutes from the bench with Aron Baynes at the five due to injury.

Isaiah Thomas was having the worst shooting night of his career until the final four minutes of the game, as he single-handedly led a Celtics run to regain the lead with 2:30 left. But Anthony Tolliver nailed a three to regain the lead followed by a Jae Crowder offensive foul.

Stanley Johnson broke the back-and-forth deadlock when he drilled an open corner three early in the shot clock with just under a minute left. With Thomas missing one of his free throws on the previous possession, the Celtics had the ball down two possessions with a minute left.

Stevens ran an ATO play to get Marcus Smart a post up right under the rim. But he threw up a quick spinning reverse layup, which wasn’t close to going in.

Isaiah Thomas missed another critical free throw in the final minute as did Marcus Smart, leaving the Celtics down two with just over 30 seconds left. After getting a crucial stop, Marcus Smart was called for an over the back foul on the foot taller Baynes on the rebound, giving Detroit a four-point lead. The Celtics would never recover and eventually were done in by the Pistons' free throws.

018: Boston Celtics vs Brooklyn Nets: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Jan 03, 2016
    Show notes

BOSTON – Brook Lopez made the Celtics feel the pain of not having a powerful low post defender, as he led the Brooklyn Nets to a 100-97 win.

The Celtics came roaring back to open the fourth quarter, going on a 12-2 run to tie the game. But with Stevens using an ubersmall lineup with Jonas Jerebko and Jae Crowder as the bigs against Brook Lopez, the game slowed down and the Nets chipped away.

Lopez was phenomenal, scoring a season-high 30 points with 13 rebounds. The Celtics double-teamed him throughout the second half, with his kick out passes invariably resulting in good looks for his teammates. With Stevens experimenting with different defensive schemes after Avery Bradley went down for the day with a hamstring injury, the Celtics never found a strategy that worked for more than a few minutes.

But there was a sudden spark, as Amir Johnson checked in and Isaiah Thomas, of all people, took over defensively. Marcus Smart got back to his role as defensive catalyst in the fourth quarter and suddenly the Celtics were running laps past Brooklyn. Isaiah Thomas was pick pocketing ball handlers being trapped by Jae Crowder.

But the Nets were eventually able to break the Celtics’ full court press. With 26 seconds left and the Celtics down three, the Nets swung the ball around until Brook Lopez was open under the hoop. As he threw it down, the Celtics chances began to fade.

After a circus of Marcus Smart steals and saves to give the Celtics one last chance to tie it, Jonas Jerebko short armed a wide open corner three with two seconds left. Marcus Smart flung the save to Jae Crowder 30-feet out, who couldn’t get a shot off in time.

The Celtics head down to Brooklyn for a Monday grudge match to attempt to tie up the season series.

017: Boston Celtics vs LA Lakers: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews - Kobe Bryant final game in Boston Dec 31, 2015
    Show notes

Kobe Bryant flashed some of the great moves and tenacity that made him a legend, as his Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in his final game in Boston.

BOSTON - Kobe Bryant went out just the way he wanted. After an earth shattering ovation when he was introduced pregame, the Celtics crowd showered him with sarcastic boos every time he touched the ball. But every time he made a dazzling play, the fans exploded like he was in the Staples Center. It was a typical late-career Kobe night. For every handful of vintage fadeaways or up and unders that failed, he would hit a step back jumper to remind everyone who he once was (and still thinks he is). He finished with 15 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and hit double digits in "KO-BE!" chants. BONUS FEATURE: Video of Garden Report, Kobe Bryant Coverage. In Boston section of episode.

016: Boston Celtics vs NY Knicks: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews - The Garden Report Dec 29, 2015
    Show notes

Marcus Smart makes his return to the Boston Celtics Sunday after missing the last 18 games with a knee subluxation.

BOSTON – With the knee subluxation injury in the past and a month of recovery and rehab behind him, Marcus Smart returns to the floor for the Celtics Sunday night against the New York Knicks. Smart missed the last 18 games with a subluxation of the proximal tibfib joint, with the Celtics going 10-8 in that span.

The engine of the Celtics’ defense will make a gradual return, coming off the bench in short stints with an unofficial minutes restriction.

We’ll probably throw him in and see how he looks,” coach Brad Stevens said pregame. “He hasn’t played a five-on-five game in aw while. He’ll be on limited minutes. So he’ll come off the bench and we’ll play [him] short stints. There’s really not a number attached to that, but he hasn’t played in awhile and this will be his first five-on-five action in quite a bit.”

Smart will have to learn to take things slow, something that is definitely not in his nature.

“I kind of have to [take it slow] now. My body can’t; I can’t, even though I’m used to playing at one speed. This is an important time for me to just kind of really gradually gain my confidence back on the floor and trust that my body is in.”

Smart has been working hard to return before the new year, but this will be his first five-on-five experience since the injury. It’s gonna take a lot of rust-shaking to get back to being a crucial rotation...[READ MORE]

015: Boston Celtics vs Minnesota Timberwolves: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews - Kevin Garnett Farewell Tribute Dec 23, 2015
    Show notes

Kevin Garnett got the most emotional DNP of his life. As he watched his Minnesota Timberwolves fall 113-99 to his former Boston Celtics, KG got the love from the fans that only an absolute legend could enjoy. Jared Weiss of CLNS Radio is joined by Gethin Coolbaugh to reflect on KG's evening and break down the Celtics' solid win on The Garden Report Post Game Show.

BOSTON – It didn’t matter if they knew he was declared out before the game. It didn’t matter that Sam Mitchell does not let him play the second game of back-to-backs.

The fans wanted to see their Celtics legend.

"We want KG!" echoed off the parquet floor, ricocheted off the banners and landed softly on the Minnesota Timberwolves’ bench. The process repeated over and over.

"I really wanted them to stop that because I didn’t know if Sam was going to actually put me in," Garnett said. "I was like, please, please. But it was cool. Like I said, the unconditional appreciation is overwhelming. So thank you guys for that. I appreciate that."

Sometimes the chant started because one fan in the back of the loge started screaming it. Sometimes because Kevin would flash on the jumbotron. But it was all a buildup to the one moment everyone in the building was waiting for.

    Gino Time.

With 1:02 left in the game, a familiar groove started to leak out of the Garden speakers. Within seconds, the whole place was screaming. As Garnett walked onto to the court and started throwing his hand up to his muse Gino, the ghost of championships past was alive and well. The KG chants echoed throughout the Jungle one last time as the Bee Gees faded into the background.

Last time he was in Boston, KG told CLNS Radio that...READ MORE

The King put the crown on and put on a show for everyone watching with a double pump reverse slam on the break. His Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Boston Celtics 89-77.

    BOSTON – Drive. Kick. Repeat.

The second half got pretty repetitive for the Celtics, as they watched Cleveland Cavalier ball handlers slip through the perimeter defense, get to the paint and rifle a pass to a wide open corner shooter. The Cavs hit four of them in the third quarter, as they won the third 29-15.

The run started after Kevin Love hit the first three of the third quarter at the 7:46 mark. The Cavs proceeded to go on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes.

In the end, the Cavs shot 14 percent better than the Celtics. Boston attempted 9 more shots, but shot a pitiful 32.2 percent. Cleveland looked like the team Boston remembers from the first-round last year. Their perimeter defense was swarming. They stopped almost everything at the rim. Open shots for the Celtics were rare to see and rare to...READ FULL STORY

012: Boston Celtics vs Golden State Warries: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews - The Garden Report Dec 12, 2015
    Show notes

Steph Curry and Draymond Green survived foul trouble and the Celtics' best effort to continue their record winning streak.

BOSTON – Somehow, the streak continues. The Warriors came to the Garden without Klay Thompson and Harrison Barnes, facing an intense effort from the Celtics. But the longest streak to open a season in American sports history could not be stopped, despite the Celtics taking them down to the wire in two overtimes.

Although they barely got a breather over the last 20 minutes of play, Steph Curry and Draymond Green were incredible forces. Curry finished with 38 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists while playing the stretch with four fouls. Green kept pace with MVP, putting up the league's first 5x5 (At least 5 points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks) in three years.

Green had 24 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks. The only other players to get a 5x5 with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds were Hakeem Olajuwon and Derrick Coleman, per the Washington Post's Tim Bontemps.

The Celtics could not have defended Curry better. Avery Bradley made his life hell for the first 3 quarters. With foul trouble sending both players to the bench for different stretches, Evan Turner and Isaiah Thomas were called upon to...READ MORE

David Lee, Boston Celtics straight up salt Chicago Bulls 105-100

BOSTON – Before the game, David Lee was asked a series of questions about moving on from the Warriors’ championship run. Something clearly clicked, because he resembled more Draymond Green than the plodding and struggling Lee from the previous few weeks.

Although Jae Crowder was having a strong game through three quarters, coach Brad Stevens elected to stick with a front court featuring Evan Turner, Lee and Jared Sullinger for most of the fourth quarter. It blew open a stagnating game with a 12-6 run in the first 7:16, featuring an ironic blend of high pressure transition offense and incisive drive and kick passing. As the Celtics went back to their starting lineup, while flexing in Crowder as a stretch four, they continued to keep the pace high and execute on offense.

After Jared Sullinger hit a 20-foot pick and pop jumper with a minute left that had him pointing to the rafters for 20 seconds straight, Fred Hoiberg called timeout. The Bulls came back out on fire, with Jimmy Butler scoring 5 unanswered points to cut the lead to four and foul Amir Johnson out of the game. Time ran out for the Bulls, as the Celtics won out through the free throw game.

Isaiah Thomas drove the lane hard and...READ MORE
