041: Boston Celtics vs Charlotte Hornets: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Apr 13, 2016
    Show notes

Jeremy Lin pulled out a monster performance in the second quarter as the Hornets hammered the Celtics throughout their 114-100 win. The Garden Report was on the scene to break down his performance and the Celtics possible playoff match-ups.

BOSTON - As the Hornets and Celtics take the floor with first round seeding on the line, it looked like a battle of emerging point guards was to take place between Kemba Walker and Isaiah Thomas.

But Jeremy Lin stole the show, becoming the first player in the NBA this season to come off the bench and score 25 points while swiping five steals.

His dominance was established during a Charlotte run over the second quarter that saw their halftime lead balloon to 63-41.

"We laid an eight-minute egg at the end of the second quarter and we just couldn't overcome it," Brad Stevens said. "We tried to dribble through traffic and it was like we were driving through 5 guys and 10 arms."

That leaves the Celtics with a must-win game Wednesday against the Miami Heat if they want to secure home court advantage. But while the game is crucial, the overall state of the team is an even bigger question.

"This is part of competitive sports, right? You get your butt kicked. Do you get back up or not?"

The defense that has been so reliable this season has shown cracks since Jae Crowder's injury. Even with him back, teams are scoring at alarming rates while the Celtics' turnovers forced declines.

"Do you have all your T's crossed and I's dotted is the question we have to have answered," Stevens said. "Are you able to adjust on the fly and is everyone ready to compete on a high level? I do know this: everything rests after Wednesday. So obviously we do want to be playing better on Wednesday night than we did tonight."

So after Wednesday, Stevens will have to sit down, pick apart his opponent and look to his own roster. He has ran with a 9-10 man rotation most of the season, but he knows that he has to tailor it even more tightly to work in the playoffs.

"We'll talk about what we need to fix. Whether it's personnel or what we are doing. Then we'll go from there."

035: Boston Celtics vs Orlando Magic: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Mar 22, 2016
    Show notes

Little Man showed off the skills as he danced his Celtics to a sparkling win over the Orlando Magic.

BOSTON – The Isaiah Thomas Mixtape Tour filmed its latest volume against the Orlando Magic in a 107-96 win for the Celtics.

It started with a spin to ball fake fadeaway, climaxed with a through the legs pass on the break and culminated with a hook shot over a seven-foot Jason Smith to ice the game with 38 second left.

The Celtics are still a lost collection of dribble handoffs and Kelly Olynyk reaching fouls without human epoxy Jae Crowder, but they have won two games in a row to end a potentially detrimental standings free fall.

Isaiah played like that former Division Three player at the Y, throwing up absurd floaters and pulling off unnecessary ball fakes that worked half the time. But when he went cold in the fourth, Avery Bradley came through with 8 of his 22 points and four of his nine rebounds on the night.

The Celtics survived a 16-point fourth quarter by hammering the Magic in the paint during the third, scoring 20 of their 35 points in the paint. Evan Turner looked like a sharpshooter for a change, knocking down jumpers from the perimeter and getting to the rim. He scored 11 in the third.

034: Boston Celtics vs OKC Thunder: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Mar 22, 2016
    Show notes

The Celtics were overmatched by a superior Thunder squad as they lost 130-109 Wednesday night. WEEI's Sam Packard joined CLNS Radio's Jared Weiss on the Garden Report for a breakdown of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook dismantling of the Celtics.

BOSTON – I feel like I’m moving faster than we thought.

Those were the words of Jae Crowder before the Celtics hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder for an ESPN Wednesday night marquee. After a rude awakening to their place in the NBA several shelves below top, the Celtics will hold on to those words for dear life.

Faster may not be fast enough.

Brad Stevens has tried throwing Marcus Smart at a pair of hall of fame 6’10" swingmen two nights in a row and it has proven to be insufficient. The Celtics had three steals against the Thunder and lost the fastbreak points race 14-4. Even the JV squad couldn’t get a fastbreak score during the entire fourth quarter.

Smart and Crowder’s defensive presence above the break is what forces teams into making mistakes, which is the Celtics’ bread and butter. Without either of them playing the trap game, the Celtics defense relied on its switching and interior presence. But those are two tasks at which it overachieves because of Crowder’s motor and footwork.

So they watched as Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook buried shot after shot, combining for 52 points in 56 minuted. Isaiah Thomas’ 29 points epitomized the typical valiant effort he is known for, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

“They punked us. We played soft as tissue,” Thomas said.. “That third quarter, they took advantage of every little thing they could have. With a good team like that, you can’t have that happen. So, whoever is playing, whether Jae’s out, Kelly’s back, they punked us. That was basically what it was. They were the tougher team, no question.”

Although the Celtics held their own in the rebounding column for most of the night, the Thunder’s physical dominance was woefully apparent. Enes Kanter and Stevens Adams moved mountains while Durant and Westbrook took a cleaver to the Celtics’ zone defense.

Amir Johnson held up well against a flurry of bodies, contributing to Serge Ibaka’s mediocre night in the post while keeping the Celtics alive on offense with five offensive rebounds.

While the Celtics dealt with horrific timing, getting the two toughest matchups in the league for an undersized defender at the three – outside of LeBron James – the absence of their identity with Crowder going down is a red flag a month before the playoffs. There is plenty of time to recover from what should be an anomaly for a Stevens team, but the vulnerabilities that have always been under the surface are bubbling to the sky.

026: Boston Celtics vs Milwaukee Bucks: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Feb 26, 2016
    Show notes

    Written by Jared Weiss

BOSTON – Steal would be a generous word. It was more like handoff.

As Evan Turner ran away with the ball that Michael Carter-Williams was kind enough to toss to him at the top of the key, the Bucks watched another chance to close the gap run away.

MCW fumbled it again a couple minutes later, with a red hot Isaiah Thomas eventually getting the ball and draining a dagger from three over Khris Middleton.

The Celtics beat the Bucks 112-107 despite key players surviving foul trouble and starting the game 2/18 from three.

Credit Jabari Parker for making it a contest, as he took advantage of Jae Crowder’s five fouls and took over the paint in the late fourth quarter. Parker scored eight points at the rim in a row to bring the Bucks within five with five minutes left. But Isaiah Thomas responded with seven points to help bring the Celtics’ lead back to 11 points.

The Bucks forced a pair of turnovers and came roaring back, cutting down the deficit to four points and forcing a Brad Stevens timeout with 1:12 left.

The Celtics looked like they were going to throw up a prayer coming out of the timeout and that’s exactly what happened. But BAE Crowder answered that prayer.

Isaiah Thomas threw a slew of crossovers, drove left and was met with too many bodies to handle. So naturally, he threw a blind behind-the-head pass to Crowder in the opposite corner. The pass was somehow on the money and Crowder somehow drilled the corner three.

“I seen him before I threw it.” Thomas claimed. “But when I threw it, I couldn’t see him no more, so I’m glad he stayed in that corner and made me look good. It’s just something, I made an adjustment, like I said before I picked the ball up, I had seen he was in the corner. So I knew that was going to be my bail-out pass. Then luckily he stayed in the corner and it got there.”The

025: Boston Celtics vs LA Clippers: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Feb 11, 2016

BOSTON – The Truth was finally set free. After what may have been his final game in the TD Garden, Paul Pierce walked off the court with his hand held high.

But it was Isaiah Thomas and Evan Turner who stole the show, leading a memorable comeback to grind to an overtime win 139-134. Thomas scored 36 points with 11 assists while Turner scored 7 of his 14 points in the overtime run that gave the Celtics the lead.

It was one of the first true playoff tests for a Celtics team that has been waiting for an opponent to push its offensive capability to the breaking point.

“I just thought they got to every loose ball,” Doc Rivers said. “They’re so athletic and I just thought that their athleticism won out at the end of the day.”

But the Celtics’ fight got only stronger in the closing minutes, as Isaiah Thomas yet again scored incredible buckets to narrow the gap in crunch time. This was partnered with incredible hustle plays from Marcus Smart, who nearly gave the Celtics three possessions in a row when he was erroneously called for a loose ball foul on JJ Redick.

“I’ve never seen a little guy—other than Spudd [Webb] – that makes his living in the paint,” Doc said of Thomas. “You very rarely see one that gets in the paint and makes shots. And he does it consistently.”

After forcing a Chris Paul missed three with 24 seconds left, Jae Crowder was hit with...READ FULL REPORT

023: Boston Celtics vs Orlando Magic: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Jan 31, 2016
    Show notes

Spurred on by a Balanced Attack and a Fourth Quarter Run, the Boston Celtics Dismantle the Orlando Magic, 113-94

With Floyd “Money” Mayweather in attendance for Friday night’s game between the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic, the Boston Celtics waited until the fourth quarter to deliver the finishing punch, besting the Magic 113-94.

The Celtics, who have now won five straight, and 8 out of 10 games, were paced by a bench that outscored the starters by a 62-51 margin.

Kelly Olynyk continued his ascension as an offensive force, tying the team-high with 16 points on 7-12 shooting. He was also a team-high +29 on the night.

Since a loss back on January 12 against the Knicks, Olynyk has averaged 14.1 points on 51% shooting from the floor, including a robust 62% from three-point.

In addition to Olynyk’s aggressive offensive output tonight, the Celtics bench closed the door on what had yet to be a decided game with a 22-4 run to begin the fourth quarter, which included a lead as high as 27 points.

“We were just moving the ball and getting out in transition, getting easy stuff to the hoop,” Olynyk said of the team’s success to begin the fourth. “You can’t go on a 15 to 0 run without getting stops.”

In what ended up being Boston’s 11th straight game with 100 points or more scored, it was the defense that rotated quickly and efficiently, forcing the Magic into 40% shooting on the night.

“They [the Celtics] get up, they get into you, they try to make it difficult, and you try to run something [and] they just blow right through it.”

Isaiah Thomas posted an efficient 14 points and 8 assists in 27 minutes of action in front of his friend Mayweather, Jae Crowder had his outside shot going with 3 made three-pointers, and Jared Sullinger put up points early with an advantageous matchup to start the game, however, it was the bench that made the starters night an early one.

Marcus Smart made the Magic ball handlers’ nights a living hell with a game-high three steals. Smart, who also tied Olynyk with a game-high 16 points on the night, helped instill an intensity that made bedlam in the Garden on Friday night.

“Our intensity on both ends is good to see out there and we have a big test coming up Sunday playing the same team again, especially after beating them here on our home court they’ll be hungry for a win,” Smart said.

Boston will visit these same Magic Sunday at 6 p.m.

022: Boston Celtics vs Chicago Bulls: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Jan 24, 2016
    Show notes

BOSTON – The Cardiac Celtics gave plenty of scares Friday night, but Brad Stevens’ team held on for their lives as they escaped with a 110-101 win over the Chicago Bulls.

It was one of the less common than not instances in which the Celtics executed on both ends in crunch time and actually pushed away an oncoming stampede.

“Guys were sharing the ball, guys were executing, getting into the right spots at the right time,” Isaiah Thomas said describing the late game performance. “And we played, overall, a pretty good game against a really good Chicago Bulls team. Hopefully we can build on that and get some momentum and get some more wins.”

The team’s defense was effective, but the Celtics continue to count on Isaiah Thomas to lead the charge late in games. For a team that was labeled as without a star, it seems its Nebula is growing into a White Dwarf.

When Jimmy Butler led the Bulls all the way back to a one-point deficit, Thomas was given the ball with the responsibility of making a decaying Celtics offense come back to life. After Jared Sullinger missed his fourth midrange jumper of the half, the Celtics received a gift.

Nikola Mirotic beat Kelly Olynyk down the lane in transition for what should have been an easy layup to take the Bulls’ first lead of the game. Derrick Rose rifled in a Magic-esque bounce pass, but it caromed off of Mirotic’s hands and went out of bounds.

Thomas took the inbound, quickly went up court, faked a post-up on Aaron Brooks to open up the baseline and attacked the rim. The rest of the game focused on getting Thomas good looks at the rim.

“Just wanted to be aggressive and get to the hoop,” Thomas said. “Like I said, I thought we were settling for a lot of jump shots that we weren’t making and they were the more aggressive team. I just tried to make something happen, get in the paint and see what I had.”

The Celtics dominated the first half with flashes of brilliance from Winter Storm Jonas Jerebko and should-be-starter Kelly Olynyk. Although Jimmy Butler responded to Dwyane Wade stealing his All-Star starting spot by doing his best vintage Wade impression en route to 28 points and 13 rebounds, the Celtics maintained a consistent double-digit lead.

Their defensive effort was persistent, as they forced the Bulls into mediocre shots on most possessions and handled Pau Gasol decently with a frequently changing rotation of bigs.

“Well we were guarding them. That was pretty clear,” Stevens said post game. “Usually when you guard, you’re locked, you’re engaged. And then good things can happen offensively. We were pretty focused on defending at a better level than we’ve defended in the past week or 10 days.”

Their lead continued after halftime as Isaiah Thomas and Avery Bradley took over scoring duties.

But then vintage Derrick Rose showed up to the party. The former MVP scored 16 points in the third quarter on 6-for-9 shooting. He scored in every way, hitting both of his deep jumpers from the left elbow and scoring on three of his four shots at the hoop.

Rose’s explosion late in the third quarter narrowed the Celtics lead to 90-82 entering the fourth quarter. It seemed like the Bulls were finally turning the tide before Tyler Zeller broke through.

Zeller’s persistence on the pick-and-roll and hustle on the offensive glass helped the sputtering Celtics offense maintain its lead through the early fourth quarter. He grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds in the run as part of the Celtics’ collective 15 rebounds. This was two more than the Bulls, the top rebounding teams in the league.

The Bulls made another run to grind the lead down to one. But the Celtics responded with a 10-2 run down the stretch before the Bulls started intentionally fouling. Every time the Celtics found themselves with their backs against the wall, they successfully punched their way out.

The Celtics will attempt to travel to Philadelphia at some point this weekend to play their newly scheduled Sunday evening game. But Winter Storm Jonas threatens to ruin those plans.

“If there’s a window that opens up for us to travel [Saturday] night, we will,” Stevens said. “If not, then we’ll just figure out how to get there Sunday as quickly as possible. Obviously, the NBA and we want to be there overnight. But like we talked about before, safety is the number one issue and we’ll make sure that’s prioritized. Certainly not a lot of people traveling into Philly and DC like we are this weekend.”

Besides a few crazy Celtics fans, of course.

021: Boston Celtics vs Phoenix Suns: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Jan 16, 2016
    Show notes

Marcus Smart recorded his first career triple-double while Kelly Olynyk proved the manbun is a myth in a blowout win over the Suns.

BOSTON – Marcus Smart earned his first career triple-double as the Celtics crushed the Phoenix Suns in a 117-103 wire-to-wire blowout Friday night. Smart had 10 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks in 32 minutes.

The Celtics won out with their usual high pace game, taking 96 shots while assisting on 30 of their 42 field goals. Smart did everything Friday, from holding Brandon Knight to 16 points in 40 minutes to picking up Mirza Teletovic in the paint.

Smart chased down three offensive rebounds, from pretty much out of nowhere, in the fourth quarter to ensure the Suns’ brief run wouldn’t get them close.

The Celtics had seven players in double figures, with Kelly Olynyk scoring a game-high 21 points.

The second half closed with a Klynyk from the Manbun, sans bun that is. Olynyk lost his mind and his bangs when he went on a 13-0 run by himself to close out the first half. The run was capped off by a Jared Sullinger transition three and an Avery Bradley putback on a missed open layup by Jae Crowder that went down a tenth of a second after the buzzer.

The Celtics made their last four threes of the half and finished with a 16-2 run in the final four minutes to go into halftime with a 68-47 lead.

020: Boston Celtics vs Indiana Pacers: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews Jan 14, 2016
    Show notes

The Celtics went on an incredible 14-2 run to close out the game as they beat the Indiana Pacers 103-94. WEEI's Sam Packard joined CLNS Radio's Jared Weiss to break the game down.

BOSTON – For first time in three weeks at home, the Celtics did not need to walk off in dismay after the final buzzer. Brad Stevens’ squad has been growing accustomed to fending for their lives as they watch a seemingly insurmountable lead crumble beneath them.

But Wednesday night was the contrarian result, as Marcus Smart and Jae Crowder led a head-spinning pit bull attack that caused four straight steals and four straight fast break baskets. When the dust settled after a 14-2 run in the final 2:31 of the game, the Celtics emerged with the confidence earned from such a dramatic stamp on a game.

"That was like a video game," Isaiah Thomas said. "I’ve definitely seen it on one of the video games I’ve played. That was crazy."

It was remarkable and rare, but more importantly vital for a team that has been drowning in its early but unsustainable success every game.

"We’ve been struggling with that, closing out games," Smart said. "That was a big point for us tonight was make sure we close out the game. We knew Indiana, what they wanted to do and they were gonna try to push it down our throats and get in the paint and score the ball. We just have to bite our teeth and guard them."

The Celtics have gone 6-9 over the past month after spending most of the early season chasing Cleveland for the top seed in the East. But after scoring a season-low 77 points to those Cavaliers in the Garden on December 15, the entire organization has been trying to reestablish its identity.

This may look familiar if one were accustomed to the pace and space team that ran rampant on the NBA in November by forcing more turnovers than any other team in the league.
