Fuel Her Awesome — Mental Health, Aging, Nutrition & Healing Your Relationship With Food: gut-brain connection, emotional eating, women’s hormone health, food freedom, empowered eating

Most women don’t have a nutrition problem. They have a relationship problem — with food, with their bodies, and with themselves. And until someone addresses that, no meal plan is going to stick.

Welcome to Fuel Her Awesome — the podcast where mental health and nutrition finally meet. I’m Jess Brown, registered dietitian, certified eating disorder consultant, certified sports dietitian and your guide to understanding why you eat the way you do — and how to change it without shame, restriction, or starting over.

Each episode goes beyond the food to explore the root causes most providers miss: the gut-brain connection driving your mood, the stress hormones shaping your cravings, the nutrient gaps nobody tested for — and what you can actually do about it. Science-backed, judgment-free, and built for the woman who is done treating symptoms and ready to heal the root.

This isn’t another wellness podcast. It’s the one that finally connects the dots.

    Subscribe for weekly episodes on:

→ The gut-brain axis and how your microbiome affects your mental health

→ How cortisol, blood sugar, and stress hormones drive your eating behavior

→ The nutrient depletions linked to depression, anxiety, and ADHD that nobody tested for

→ What your body is actually communicating — and how to listen

→ Science that’s real, actionable, and completely judgment-free

You’re not broken. You’re just missing the full picture. Let’s build it together.

Should I Reach For Bigger, Healthier Goals or Be Happy Where I Am At? Aug 14, 2023
    Show notes

You know how some days you're raring to go and ready to see how far you can push your body, and how much stronger you can become? Then, other days, you are totally content in some baggy sweatpants on the couch with a pint of Ben and Jerry's? I know you feel me!

This balance of discipline and flexibility, intentionality and freedom, is a great example of my new favorite motto - grit and grace. As we transition from a season of routine reset, into a new season of more structure and goal setting, I thought it would be perfect timing to break this 'grit and grace' mentality down in an effort help guard against the 'all or nothing' mentality.

Understanding the nuances between grit and grace or discipline and flexibility can further protect us from feeling stuck in disappointment. And, when we grow from a place of peace in our body in trusting the process, we can be more focused on our goals and more motivated to keep moving along our empowered eating journey.

So, in today's episode we're going to take a look at whether you lean more towards a 'grit and grace' mentality, or an 'all or nothing' mentality. Then, we'll discuss how to be centered and mindful enough to better appreciate, and not be so afraid of, this common mindset swing.

    Cheers, and happy eating!

Setting Your Routine Up For The Long Haul. 4 Steps For A Fail Proof Routine Reset // Routine Reset Day 7 Aug 12, 2023
    Show notes

This week has been packed with tactical tips and lots of awesome! But, how do we make these changes something that we just naturally do?

Aristotle said it best: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."

To help you turn your new routines into habits, today we are breaking down the habit loop which includes: the cue, the routine, and the reward. Understanding this loop can help you reengineer your habits.

The battle with behavior change is that the reward may not be as instant, or arguably, the reward isn’t what we are used to. The trick is to know how to find the new reward, and practice the new habit, so your brain starts to crave the new reward.

Enjoy today's episode as we dive into breaking down the habit loop and re-working this technique to better support your goals.

Thank you so much for joining me in this Routine Reset Challenge! We no doubt accomplished a lot of work, and the best part is each reset paves the way for empowered eating.

    Cheers, and happy eating.

How Much Exercise Do You Actually Need? The 3 Things You Need To Make It Happen // Routine Reset Day 6 Aug 11, 2023
    Show notes

I was sitting with a new client this week. She is a beautiful young woman. The kind of woman with a body that doesn’t fit our culture’s expectations. And yet, she possessed an aura of beauty about her.

She came to me because she said she was bigger than all her friends and she struggled with this. She said she was trying to like her body, but it feels like a losing battle because the fact of the matter is, she is in a bigger body.

We addressed a lot in our conversation, including a lot of the skills we work through in the Empowered Eating Method such as: body image resiliency, the body image scale, and values work. But, at the end, we had a particularly interesting conversation about exercise.

I asked her how she felt when she moved her body- and she said she felt better! She said, when moving her body it felt stronger and more energetic - and even though her body doesn’t physically change when she moves it for a few days, she has more confidence.

Then, I asked her why she doesn’t move her body more regularly. Her answer was something I think so many of us can relate to. She said, because when she misses a day, she feels like a failure and so she falls off the wagon. This all-or-nothing mentality, with an undercurrent of diet culture, insinuates that exercise is something that must always meet a certain expectation, or criteria.

Today in the routine reset we going to identify the top three barriers to regular, fun exercise, and discuss how to overcome them.

    Cheers and happy eating!

Protein Power! The Foundation for Strength // Routine Reset Day 5 Aug 10, 2023
    Show notes

Once upon a time there was a girl who thought too much protein would make her look like The Rock.

Then she drank the protein juice (literally... there were lots of protein shakes) and she never looked back. What she didn’t know then (that she knows now) is that protein provides a continuous stream of amino acids to the body that builds not just muscles, but also builds enzymes, hormones and powerful neurotransmitters. This synergistic combination maintains healthy hair, skin, and nails while keeping your immune system strong.

Let’s talk about protein power! It's no secret that protein is a dietary superstar, the problem is we as women still don’t get enough of it. And, we don’t understand the importance of timing our protein intake to really reap the most protein power packed benefits for our body.

To learn more about your protein needs tune in to today's show!

    Cheers, and happy eating!

How do I manage to wake up daily at 4:15 AM... with a smile?!?!? I learned to sync up my circadian rhythm, with my metabolism, based on my biofeedback.

In today's Routine Reset Challenge we are setting you up for circadian rhythm success!

Should You Eat On A Schedule? // Routine Reset Day 2 Aug 07, 2023
    Show notes

Should you eat on a schedule? I don’t prefer the word should, so first things first, let’s reframe this question: Is it helpful to eat on a schedule?

As a sports and eating disorder dietitian, I have found scheduling meals, especially in your initial empowered eating stages, can be extremely beneficial.

Here is why: Sometimes our hunger and fullness cues are off and we need to reset them. We either get too busy, and skip meals and snacks, or we only eat when starving. And when we practice this type of eating style - we usually end up overeating, and typically end up trying to reduce intake at the next meal.

So, the very first step I recommend clients take as they reset their eating routine, is to make a plan to eat every 2-4 hours. This is actually the first food step we tackle in my program, The Empowered Eating Method.

To learn more about how to fight hunger and keep from overeating, tune in to today's show!

    Cheers, and happy eating!
