Fuel Her Awesome — Mental Health, Aging, Nutrition & Healing Your Relationship With Food: gut-brain connection, emotional eating, women’s hormone health, food freedom, empowered eating

Most women don’t have a nutrition problem. They have a relationship problem — with food, with their bodies, and with themselves. And until someone addresses that, no meal plan is going to stick.

Welcome to Fuel Her Awesome — the podcast where mental health and nutrition finally meet. I’m Jess Brown, registered dietitian, certified eating disorder consultant, certified sports dietitian and your guide to understanding why you eat the way you do — and how to change it without shame, restriction, or starting over.

Each episode goes beyond the food to explore the root causes most providers miss: the gut-brain connection driving your mood, the stress hormones shaping your cravings, the nutrient gaps nobody tested for — and what you can actually do about it. Science-backed, judgment-free, and built for the woman who is done treating symptoms and ready to heal the root.

This isn’t another wellness podcast. It’s the one that finally connects the dots.

    Subscribe for weekly episodes on:

→ The gut-brain axis and how your microbiome affects your mental health

→ How cortisol, blood sugar, and stress hormones drive your eating behavior

→ The nutrient depletions linked to depression, anxiety, and ADHD that nobody tested for

→ What your body is actually communicating — and how to listen

→ Science that’s real, actionable, and completely judgment-free

You’re not broken. You’re just missing the full picture. Let’s build it together.

    Show notes

To eat the Halloween candy, or not eat the Halloween candy.. that is the question.

Halloween kicks off what I call 'the food holiday season'! From today, until Valentine's Day, there will be food EVERYWHERE. This can bring up so many thoughts like..

How do I navigate the extra food?

    What if I overeat?

What happens if I gain weight?

How can I stay focused on my goals?

Should I stay focused on my goals?

Here is the thing about empowered eating - there is no off season because you are always in the drivers seat. To be an empowered eater means you are aware, you are awake, and you are intentionally choosing how to take care of your body.

With this in mind, I know it is possible to enjoy holiday foods while setting appropriate boundaries and continuing to feel good. In today's episode, I share three to-do’s to kickstart your empowered eating holiday season!

    Cheers, and happy (holiday) eating!

Live in Your ”Imperfect” Body (and Stop Apologizing For it!) + 3 Steps to Beat the Inner Body Bully Oct 09, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back friends! Today, we're talking about a very important topic.. body image and your 'inner body bully.' We have all struggled with this 'inner body bully' at least to some degree, and we may even be carrying it with us still to this day, and probably more than we'd like to admit.

One of the things that keeps coming up in my coaching sessions, inevitably, are these intense emotions around food, in relation to our body image, and how it makes us feel. These feelings can often evoke shame, we find ourselves apologizing, and you may even sense a pit in your stomach or a tightness in your throat.

If you feel this way when you talk about body image, and how you view your body, you are not alone! This is a struggle that so many of us have. So today, my mission is to bring this body image conversation out in the open and talk about it, so that it doesn't hold so much power over us anymore.

Listen in and get ready, because I'm about to give you some hands on tools, to help you beat the inner body bully, and learn to move towards a healthier more empowered relationship with the very vessel you have - your body! After all, our body is the one thing we live in our entire life, so let's get empowered and learn to treat our body the way it deserves to be treated, with kindness and loving care.

    Cheers, and happy eating!

    Show notes

Hey friends, today is a very special interview! My friend Erin Osbourn shares her story on how she overcame her battle with food, and is now serving others in this realm.

Erin is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in eating disorders, body dysmorphia, OCD, substance use disorders, and trauma work. What I love about Erin is that, while she is now on the other side, she hasn't forgotten what it's like to be in the thick of the struggle.

So today, Erin will be talking about her journey and we'll be discussing: Where do we people please, and at what point do we lose ourself in that people pleasing? She'll also be sharing advice on how to bring ourselves back from those people pleasing tendencies. And how, when we do bring ourselves back, the beauty and empowerment that comes with it, allows us to have even more to give to the world!

I know you're going to love today's episode and come away with some practical tips and strategies to help you stop wasting time, and make the most of your time so you can take better care of yourself.

The Best Way to Understand Your Body’s Biofeedback for the Perfectionist, All-Or-Nothing Thinker Aug 28, 2023
    Show notes

I love talking women into swapping the scale for biofeedback. Say adios to the scale and chains of entrapment, and hello to some mind-body connection!

This swap is paramount for your empowered eating journey. However, there is one major mindset shift that has to come with it, and that is one of PSYCHOLOGICAL FLEXIBILITY. If we pull in the perfectionistic, all-or-nothing thinking - we are missing the point of what the connection is doing in the first place.

In today's episode, I am sharing with you the psychological flexibility formula, so you can learn biofeedback, without getting stuck in all-or-nothing mentality.

    Cheers, and happy eating!
