FTN Episode 383 – Can You Stop The Drukhari Menace? May 01, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Who can’t love a 75% win percentage? Honestly, the Drukhari are benefiting from being the new codex on the block and do have some great rules. A handful of folks are calling for change but what is really the answer? As always it is a mix of things and we talk about it.

    Hey all,

Last weekend the Dark Eldar codex did really well in the few events that did happen around the world. This isn’t surprising for lots of reasons. Some long time tournament sharks switched to the new codex, the codex is new, and not a lot of players have experience against them.

These are just contributing factors though. The codex is strong and the FAQ didn’t do a lot to dull that shine. Should we have expected it to? I don’t think so. The game is an ecosystem. Things are going to appear strong until we as nature, or the environment, figure out a way to deal with it.

Much how Scatter Lasers once ruled the day and then Damage 2 weapons had to be added to answer new marines and then quickly fell back out of favor due to Death Guard, we’re in another pickle. What do we do now?!

Ahhhhh! Honestly that’s part of the fun and just something you have to deal with if you want to play ‘competitively.’

Throw Dice, Have Fun. Later in the show we talk about making 500 point events a thing. Is it possible? Some of us think so.

FTN Episode 382 – Do We Need Active Judges in Organized Play? Apr 25, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We talk a little bit about tournament prep in this episodes and it leads us to a discussion on the potential need for active judging. Of course we are a long way from large scale organized events but what if.. What if we build back in a different way from where we left off?

    Hey folks,

This is an interesting one.. Active Judging means a lot of things to a lot of people. I think a fair number of us still think of our individual experience shared between two people and even when that is nestled in a round of a multi-day tournament. Should what goes on during that game be looked over by a third party?

Sort of in line with the whole episode Paul sits down with Val Hefflefinger to talk about the Rightful Ruler kickstarter going on right now. Please check it out and if you have the means to kick in a few dollars this really might help push broadcasting of organized events even more enriched. You may find some good stuff for your personal games too – both competitive, narrative and casual.

Personally, I do think the idea of active judging when the stakes are high is a good thing. There can be a LOT going on and maybe we could all benefit from a neutral party to help keep us all straight.

Where does it stop though? In the course of most games we are allowed to give grace to our opponents. We let people do a take back every now and then or an out of phase action. Will an active judge let us keep this as part of our experience?

Ultimately this is something that the TO has to decide if they want this to be a part of their tournament culture. We’re adding this to the list of Culture Crafting we plan to talk about soon.

FTN Episode 381 – Can Vehicles Get A Cover Save? Apr 17, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

With the current Keyword can Vehicles receive a benefit of a cover enhanced save? We answer this question and many more on this show. Unless you have a rule book handy right now I guess you’re just going to have to tune in….

    Hey all,

A buddy hit me up this week to talk about the differences in cover saves and the things that get them from the previous edition to the this one. We walked through it on the phone but it still didn’t sit ‘right’ with him.

On the show we talk about how cover is largely a Pass/Fail thing in tournament settings. Is that a good thing? It’s easier for us as players but on your home table are you free or empowered to make the rules be whatever you want them to be? The answer is, of course, on that but we don’t get that far into it.

I know we’ve talked a ton about terrain recently but it’s such a huge element of the game I think it’s worth it to continue to riff on it a bit. It’s a chore for some to put it all together, make it look good, and then store it from game to game but we need it!

On the back half of the show we talk about the upcoming changes to the Adeptus Mechanicus weapons previewed on the Warhammer Community page this week.

The changes may seem subtle but we believe they will have a huge impact to the battlefield roles the units currently hold on the battlefield.

FTN Episode 380 – What Is the State Of 40k 9th Edition? – Who Is Getting Games In? Apr 10, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We have fun with this episode and talk very generally about the state of 40k in this edition. We can’t wait until it’s safer to get out to events again and we spend a little time discussing what changed from 8th that we like the most. We also talk that even with fewer games being played the meta is still shifting.

    Hey folks,

There is a point in the show where I completely forgot I used a squad of terminators in 4th Edition for Blood Angels. Other than that brief occurrence of 3 Thunder Hammers and 2 Lightning claws Terminators haven’t been the same since 2nd edition. Ohh my has that changed. Its so cool that even in the world of Primaris Marines that Terminators look like they are here to stay.

We discuss the ‘state of play’ with 40k in this edition and wax on a bit about the things we like the most and what stands out to us about the ways we’ve had to adapt our thought process to account for the biggest changes.

This leads us to a cool conversation about Secondary Objectives and how they are being introduced in Codexes and Supplement books. When these first hit the scene there was a brief outcry to disallow these things from matched play events. I’m so thankful this hasn’t taken hold.

I believe these things are going to help players feel like they have a fighting chance when they roll up to any and all tables. That isn’t something you can say from all missions in previous editions.

Games Workshop is seemingly no longer turning a ‘blind eye’ to competitive plat. Honestly I don’t think they ever did. I think the rules sets are getting a little tighter and we are getting closer to having a – dare I sat it – Balanced Game.

FTN Episode 379 – Is the Book of Rust a Must Have – Yep Apr 03, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

I guess I shouldn’t answer the question to the catchy title in the title but hey… maybe I saved you a click. If you play the factions represented in the Book of Rust you know you want it. For others, what you’ll find is a really well thought out book with a lot of cool lore, campaign ideas and awesome art. Get it!

    Hey all,

I play two of the factions represented in the Book of Rust and I couldn’t be more pleased. With the Adeptus Mechanicus we see some pretty nice upgrades to struggling units and army types.

For the Death Guard we see a way of playing that doesn’t (and also prohibited from if that matters) center around Mortarion. I love playing with the giant figures but they aren’t for everyone. Some folks don’t prefer using them and some people prefer not to play against them. Either way – the rules presented for Death Guard here are pretty novel and allow for a style of play that harks back to when the idea of a Chaos Legion came about as a powerful concept all the way back in 3rd edition. (3.5)

The same idea holds true with the Admech. The concepts here give what I consider the minimum amount of rules buffing to add a WHOLE new playable list type back to the faction. I like playing with the Robots and happen to have a fair amount painted so my eyes list up when I got a chance to look at the rules. The rules are good, but not too good. Why does this matter? I think people will be pleased and not feel like they were a victim or benefactor of codex creep. It feels weird to even type this!

We kick off the talk about a potential overpowered thing with the Druhkari being able to stack multiple on top of multiple for attacks from a single character model. Wow.. this could be big but I honestly don’t read it the way that some people are reading it that benefit from certain interpretations. With that said – I do see where they are coming from so I’d put this point on FAQ Watch.

Watch this space for more hobby stuff.

FTN Episode 378 – Will Codex Drukhari Change The Game? Codex Review Part 2 Mar 28, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We dive deeper into Codex Drukhar this week exploring many of the changes and new things possible from the new codex. There is a lot that’s different. Squad sizer requirements might be a big deal. We think the book has a lot of teeth but it won’t be easy to use.

    Hey folks,

The codex is a scalpel. You won’t be able to clumsily slog through a game with two big blobs of Grotesques in this book. The Dark Eldar are back to be super sleep and super deadly but in my opinion you’ll need a lot of practice to find the right combos and mix of each unit on the table top.

I honestly feel like this is what the game ‘should be’ anyway and the core of my opinion is that the Drukhari have lot of tools. When the game changes around them they will be able to hang in there an adapt right out of this codex.

We’ll end up seeing more vehicles on the table out of this army than we’ve seen in a while. Long time players may be able to take their Venoms right off the shelf and put them on the table. This is a very similar thing Craftworld players have been able to do with their Wave Serpents.

We kick the show off with a Hobby Segment once again talking about when and how to seal your models. If you don’t do it yet.. do it!

The key is finding a method that you can work into your hobby routine or is the best for your average climate. I know I’ve got a squad I’ve been waiting to seal until Spring. HA!

FTN Episode 377 – GW Preview Reactions and Drukhari Review Part 1 Mar 21, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

The hottest of hot takes on this episode right here… We waited to record until directly after the Games Workshop preview on Saturday. I’m g lad we did, we saw a ton of brand new miniatures. Will this new Ork change the game?! We also run down our initial thoughts on the new Drukhari Codex.

    Hey all,

There is a lot to go over from the GW preview. We saw releases across the board and I can honestly say I think I want to buy it all. It’s a blessing and a curse, ha!

Necromunda isn’t incredibly big in my area but it has dedicated followers and we have a consistent play group. I’ve always been a fan of the Redemptionist and the new figures do not disappoint. I can’t wait to get them in my hands. On the show we also talk about other uses for some of these incredible models.

The Sisters are getting a new model we didn’t even know they needed. It looks like they are getting some sort of Predator variant. The Sisters have no shortage of models but it’s neat to see the range so fleshed out and no doubt adding to their army build variations.

After the break we jump into our initial thoughts on the Drukhari codex. Red is a long time player of the faction and has plenty of things to share.

The additional rules around the Blades For Hire keyword and special rules will absolutely please long time players have that struggled to fit in beloved units that didn’t benefit from Army rules in the past and had hence been left on the shelves. No More!

FTN Episode 376 – Do New Models Mean New Rules? We Hope So! Mar 14, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Be’lakor is back in a big way. I promise that’s not a pun. This model is the latest from the Daemon line to get a massive makeover. This begs the question – will we see new rules? We hope so. In this episode we talk about the model but then drift off into the lore..

    Hey folks,

I’ve said it once, I’ve said it 100 times – The game is better when we have strong bad guys that can handle the the strong good guys. We all know that Marines will always be the focus of the lore and they drive tons of sales on the model side. That’s cool with me.

That doesn’t mean there is some mandate to make them better rules wise, of course though. I think the game is much more enjoyable on some tangible level when the bad guys give as good as they can get. Is this model going to be what sets off that powder keg? I hope so.

We discuss the origins of Be’lakor model wise originally being from Warhammer Fantasy Battle and eventually making his way to 40k.

It’s so cool that we can have these amazing Daemon models in both game sets. I know I plan to magnetize the casualty on his base in order to give him the ability to pull double duty.

We got the fact about the first female Necron wrong last week. Thanks a lot for keeping us honest, folks. We make that correction in this episode.

FTN Episode 375 – Do You Have To Worry About Heavy Intercessors? Mar 06, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We kick off the show talking about Heavy Intercessors and their impact on the game. Like many of the Marine units they are a big deal for certain Chapters. We spend a little time talking about where these fit in as must-haves. Later we talk about a cool new lore tidbit for the Necrons.

    Hey all,

If you play Imperial Fists of Ultramarines I can see you being pretty excited for these Heavy Intercessors. They synch really well with those Chapter Traits. These have been the missing piece in a few potential list builds and should end up being pretty powerful on the tabletop.

Another standout use is the Deathwatch. With the Heavy Intercessors being a troop choice if you’re a player of one of these Chapters you should ask yourself ‘why not’ if you aren’t considering these.

Sadly the price point of Pariah Nexus will prevent them from being a ‘value buy’ from those looking to nab and split the box on the reseller sites. You’ll end up paying close to retail to get these on your table early. I’m sure a full separate release isn’t far behind but I know a lot of players enjoy these windows where they can pick up new models on the cheap sometimes.

Later in the show we talk about how these new Necron Cryptek is referred to as a she. I mean.. of course there were female Necrontyr but I guess we never thought about it. The Necrons are becoming a force to be reckoned with on the tabletop and I think we’ve just scratched the surface on their lore.

We round out the show talking about things and games we could wish into existence.

For anyone who has read this far down we’ve recorded the first video with myself and Oscar Lars where we review a listener submitted model. It should be produced and ready to go mid November. Please keep checking back and if you have a model you’d like us to review for how it would stack up vs the Battle Ready standard and the Artists Standard, hit us up in a private message with a pic. This is coming soon- I promise!

FTN Episode 374 – What Happens When World’s Collide? MTG and 40k? YES!! Feb 27, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Exciting news from Wizards of the Coast and Games Workshop this week with the announcement of Warhammer 40k IP is coming to the Magic the Gathering format. Wow. I guess I always wanted this and never knew it. I’m prepared to tippity tap my way to your face – and ears on this podcast.

    Hey folks,

It is pretty strange when two giants of intellectual property and fandoms come together like this. I wasn’t sure how I felt at first. The purist in me clutched my pearls, as it were, but the more I thought about the more I was interested.

The idea of having a complete 40k based Magic experience seems pretty cool to me. I plan to buy it and I hope it’s supported in a way that gives it some life in the form of being able to break this out every now and then to play with my friends or kids for years to come.

I don’t mind saying that I hope it keeps the same land/color mechanic so I can use 40k lands in my Magic decks. I don’t play very frequently at all but when I do… I’d like to tap the Emperor’s Palace to cast Ravages of War.

We ooh and ahh over the Cursed City figures a bit more later in the show.

After that we go into full speculation mode about the Drukari and what we hope they bring to the table. Adam goes deep in the tank theory crafting what a glass cannon in 9th will look like. Red is a long time DE player and has some thoughts as well.
