FTN Episode 393 – How Do YOU Beat Ad Mech? Jul 11, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We ask the question everyone is wanting to know. How do you beat Ad Mech? This new army has hit the scene in a big way and are proving to be a tough nut to crack. It will take a bit for folks to adjust and we offer some suggestions on how to speed that process up. In the second half we do a teaser on the Book of Fire up for pre-order now.

    Hey folks,

Games Workshop was kind enough to send us preview copies of the Book of Fire and the new Crusade book up for pre-order now. In the back half of the show we start our coverage of the new campaign chapter.

We kick off the show with the full cast asking a very important question – How On Earth Do You Beat Ad Mech? This actually comes up with every explosive release for a signature faction. The new rules and abilities are disruptive to the status quo. This isn’t a bad thing as it injects something new in the mix that allows for other things to change keeping the cycle flowing and fresh.

I truly believe this will be the case every time we see a major faction released as each of them are distinctive by design. There will be something that we, if we care about those sorts of things, have to adapt to. I like this AS LONG AS each codex has the depth of tools to dip back in to.

I feel like this is the case with most of the codexes we’ve seen for this edition. Every time something new comes up it is an excuse to go back to the well and see what is left in the bucket. On the hobby side of things is an excuse to expand the collection and paint up some additional units. On the tournament side this is easy for us to forget as a major driving force in this hobby.

In the back half of the show it is Adam and Paul breaking down the top level info for the Book of Fire. The first Daemon Prince makes his way back to the 40k table in a pretty impressive way. Find out how inside!

FTN Episode 392 – What Is A Gaming Gotcha Moment? How Do you Manage Them? Jul 03, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

This episode gets deep. We diagnose what a ‘gotcha moment’ is and what it is not by relating it to real world examples and the spirit of a cooperative game. Did I mention we get deep? You have been warned. Enter if you dare….

    Hey everyone,

Adam sends us down a rabbit hole with an amazing question about gotcha moments. We position this to Red to describe what some of those things look like in real life and when it is technically acceptable or should at least be expected.

We then swing it back to how it manifests itself in our gaming moments. We try to cover as many aspects of this without coming off like we are telling someone how to play or in relation to any sort of expected behavior.

The complexity of the game almost automatically lends itself to us not expecting to know every single rule or every trick that our opponents can legitimately do. There are ways to ask questions in table talk that can help but that’s just one way and only something you come to with experience after you’ve sort of been exposed to gotcha moments or know that you have your own to spring on folks. That’s just part of the game…

We don’t get to the end of the discussion before having to take a break but this is definitely something we’ll revisit in the future.

The last part of the show we focus on one aspect of how to play test. We try to get our hands on making sure you are actually considering all the variables when you are getting ready to pack up your models and head to the tournament venue.

    FTN Episode 391 – MSU vs Horde – What is a better in 9th? Jun 27, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

It looks like we may see a shift in this edition that allows for larger units of base troops. We discuss the virtues or min squads vs max squads and everything in between. We try to figure out if the game is pushing us in one direction or the other.

    Hey folks,

Are big units the best? We jump right into a discussion we about what the best unit size is and how that may influence your play style and secondary choices. With the way Sisters and Ad Mech have gotten larger troop unit sizes we also speculate a little bit on what might happen with the Guard.

I think we come down on the side of larger units there is a big case to be made for transports and how their use may influence the squads you ultimately take.

After the break we talk about the real world concerns and implications surrounding team tournaments.

Most of us on the show have a lot of experience with these type of events. We speak about the obstacles that you may not ‘think’ you have to worry about but can greatly contribute to your overall success during these weekends.

Team Tournament contenders need to get good at logistics, HR, project management and a list of other task but even though there are weighty words why is this so fun? Ha!

FTN Episode 390 – How Quickly Should Organized Play Events Adopt FAQs? Jun 19, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Events around the world are beginning to use the most recently updated FAQs and allow the new codexes. We ask the question ‘when’ should this happen? Should there be a delay from publish to acceptance for independent events? Are we stuck in the past because we don’t allow them at events as soon as they hit the web?

    Hey all,

Please note that we do not wish to solve this for any organizers. We just want to talk about it and introduce some talking points and that we strongly feel like the organizers should do what they feel is right for their attendees.

Organizers take all the risks and it is often largely a thankless and zero sum job. They don’t need the additional heartache of trying to predict web releases from Games Workshop.

GW does an amazing job turning around FAQs and making the information available to anyone. If you care to stay up on the latest rulings and clarification you can do so absolutely free on the GW Community page.

Later in the show Paul whines a bit about putting together Iron Stiders but contends they are soooooooo worth it. This use is stellar and with just a little savvy on the table they will work wonders.

Towards the end of the show Adam asks us what our three favorite Heresy Characters are. While this is completely subjective it gives us some pretty cool talking points and it’s always fun to stroll down memory lane remembering these characters and stories.

FTN Episode 389 – Fire Up Those Immolators – Prepare for Dominiation Jun 13, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We keep going with the Adepta Sororitas codex. We continue to discover the way the Codex plays is a little different than it was before, unit that used to outclass certain army choices now find themselves in competition. This is great, we don’t think you’ll see two Sisters army ever be the same.

    Hey all,

As promised we start the show from lasts week’s cliffhanger talking about the Battle Sanctum. I’m kidding about the cliffhanger of course but we spend a little time on this unit. It’s not something to discount out of hand because it’s a terrain piece.

We then talk a little about how a few units have seen some significant improvements and my opinion the ‘most improved is the Dominion Squad. These models get an impressive upgrade with a damage 2 storm bolter with Stratagems that further buff up their damage potential.

It is extremely lethal. It is a bit of a glass cannon strategy but what a cannon… The Dominion squad gets a little razzle dazzle from the olds days being able to scoot up their transport before the game starts. That transport can also be an Immolator.

The Immolator can be a mid field bully unit to be sure. Now it gets a little bit more of a nudge when you can move it’s 18 inch flame cannons a little closer to the enemy. There will be no where they can hide!

We go over a few combos and then close the show out speaking about a couple of our favorite Orders in this new book. Really, this is an elegantly designed dex with lots of options that should keep players entertained for a long time.

FTN Episode 388 – Adepta Sororitas NEW Codex Review – Get Ready For Holy Fire Jun 05, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Take your first looks at the new Adepta Sororitas codex with us. The Sisters have been a dominant force on the tabletop for a while now and we can expect more of the same – just a little bit differently. The function and synergy from mainstay units has changed a bit and there are new competitive options to throw into the mix that makes the army selection a little more tricky. Take a listen to our initial impressions.

    Hey folks,

We have the whole crew back this week thankfully! We head right to the new stuff with the codex. There are some impressive new units that should instantly make their way to your tabletop – or not – I mean.. We aren’t going to tell you how to play!

I’m mostly kidding here but the truth is that the new units have mostly just added NEW ways to play the codex without making the old ways obsolete. This makes me pretty happy.

What we do see is that a few of the built in abilities of the units have been removed from the dataslates seemingly to put more of a focus around the army functioning in layers like we’ve seen with other codexes and less about the units being a complete package all to themselves. Of course there are still some powerhouses but some of the more infantry based squads now need a little support from HQ or Elite units or otherwise work in tandem with your generalship.

The Paragon Warsuits are flashy and powerful, with no doubt but we actually put a lot of attention on the Sacresants. If you haven’t ordered some already you will want to do it now because these will no doubt sell out.

Sisters fans have a lot of look forward to in this codex including impressive Character upgrades similar to what we’ve seen with the Marines and other dexes. Seriously, there isn’t a bad one in the bunch.

FTN Episode 387 – Yes We MeChANicus! – Get Ready To Data Tether May 29, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We’ve seen some Codexes come out of the gates guns blazing but this one may be the best yet. There is an incredible amount of layers to this codex where you can stack buffs, trade abilities without the sacrifice of much durability. Weirdly though, it seems pretty balanced. You can’t have it all and this codex will have generals scratching their head to figure out the most optimal build.

    Hey all,

It’s just Adam and Paul again this week as we’ve had to juggle some scheduled around and people are out of pocket. Thanks for sticking in there with us and the regular folks should be back next week.

It is easy for us to say that ‘everything is good’ but there are tons of strong choices in this codex. You can’t get it all due to points and the ‘brutal’ stuff is seemingly pointed appropriately. Doesn’t mean you won’t see people flocking to a few choices early on though.

The Ironstriders with Las Cannons will be one of these choices. They hit like a ton of bricks from range and can threaten ever square inch of the board. They move fast with a stratagem that allows them to move a little faster so not only will they punch hard they will also help you with board control.

The Skitarri have an increase unit size now with may be one of the biggest stealth upgrades since you can flood the board with fairly point efficient dudes with blasters you can buff with the new Marshal.

We close the show out speaking about the Marshal and how insanely good he is for his buffing ability and gets even more deadly with a Relic. This army looks cool, will be fun to play and you will certainly see it on the tabletop. Will it have what it takes to assault the meta by storm? I think so.

FTN Episode 386 – How Can Your Army Beat Drukhari? May 22, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

Short show this week. Sorry in advance. Even though we were pressed for time we tell you pretty much how every army in the game can take a chunk out of Drukhari. The Drukhari are incredibly powerful, and meanie heads, but all is not lost! You’ll have to listen quick as we burn through the solutions.

    Hey folks,

I do apologize in advance for this episode being shorter than we normally run by a few minutes but it was unavailable next week. Tune in next week for a full sized show talking about the Admech.

We elude to it on the show but the Drukhari saw astronomical win percentages over the last couple of weeks but we’re seeing that degrade a bit at the time of recording.

This can be attributed to lots of things but I think the primary thing is that – players are adapting. The hype of the internet is dying down and people are taking some hard looks at what they can change up a little bit in this forces to handle these new threats.

Point 1 – the Drukhari basically fly over everything and come get you or they sprint across the field and engage. This is coupled to the fact they have some deceptive durability with their improved transports. It can present some pretty annoying problems with what most armies have been taking so far in 9th.

We run down a host of factions and detail what we believe to be the best counter to these obstacles.

FTN Episode 385 – Revenge of the PrimOrks May 15, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We kick the show off talking about the Orks and what they may mean for the range. It’s neat to see the more ‘savage’ side of the range. We discuss a little bit if this will functionally turn into a new way to play or will they be better off as a combined force with the legacy Orks. Probably a mix of both but hey, its fun to speculate.

    Hey hey,

The Beast Snaggas will for sure make it onto most Ork table tops if they are good at hunting fast moving vehicles. We don’t know anything about their stats at this point but just the idea of being able to rush across the table and jab a bunch of Drukhari airplanes.

After the break we switch to talking about Sigmar a bit and ooh and ahh over the new models and stats.

It is hard not be excited about the new edition of Sigmar especially since we’ve seen some of the concepts make their way from game into 40k. It will be neat to see if that is still the case this time or just if there are new concepts in this edition or not.

Next week we’ll be back to our standard fare of of tactics and army talks. We will tell you how to stop the evil Dark Eldar.

FTN Episode 384 – Was Warhammer Fest 2021 What You Wanted? I’m in Love! May 08, 2021
    Show notes

    FTN small square

We’ve seen a load of reveals this week. It’s staggering to see everything that’s coming out this year. We’ll cover all of it! In this episode we basically oogle over the amazing models coming down the pike and we can’t wait.

    Hey folks,

Do you have some favorite models previewed from Warhammer Fest? Those new orks and Gravelords look amazing to me.

We recorded this show before conclusion of the daily event so I have no doubt that we missed stuff so we’ll have to make it up next week.

It sounds like we wrap the show up, because we did, but then we come back with just Paul and Red to talk about the new Tanith figures. We absolutely could not wait another week on that!

While we don’t know much about the rules we also see the Sisters are continuing to have models rolled out for them. These are freaking awesome and this is going to be one of those truly fleshed out ranges that collectors and players and enjoy for years.

Next week we’ll be back to the normal fair!

We’re delighted to continue to represent Discount Games Inc as sponsor of our show. They are helping bring FTN to you. Please check them out and support the organizations that support us. Discount Games Inc. offers Games Workshop products at 15% off the suggested retail at their website here. You can send an email to the owner Jay. These guys run a podcast too! Check them out.

The hobby segment this week is about the application of magnets and what not to try at home.

Forge the Narrative is mostly a Warhammer 40k Podcast. Each episode is about an hour long. This ideally gives you something neat to listen to on your way to work, or on the way back home. Maybe you can even listen while you are painting or modeling!

Please follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!
FTN mostly focuses on 40k, but again you will see in the first few episodes we take a severe deep dive into nerdom. These have been a blast to record and I hope they help pass the time for you. We are now on Pandora!! If you’re looking for another place to listen or you’ve shifted to that platform you can find us there. FORGE THE NARRATIVE (iTunes Page)
Alternatively you can subscribe via your own iTunes, and it should update our podcast when we post a new one.
