Finding the Throughline with Kate Hanley

Finding the Throughline: Conversations about the Creative Process invites you into the minds of writers and other creatives as they open up about their process, their doubts, and what kinds of changes they’re thinking about making. The questions are mildly invasive, honestly, and the answers are unvarnished…and so refreshing!
Whether your creative work is writing, painting, making music, parenting, or simply living, Finding the Throughline can help you get—and stay—inspired. Invigorated, even.
For detailed show notes on each interview, visit katehanley.substack.com. And if you’d like to hear these interviews in one ad-free episode (as opposed to broken up into three shorter episodes with a few ads sprinkled in to keep the lights on), become a paid subscriber once you’re there.

This week on the podcast is all about finding comfort and coziness. It’s just the time of year when it’s cold and dark (at least here in the Northern hemisphere), so craving feeling all toasty in snug is natural. [Thinking Straight]: 3 Ways to Get Clarity on What’s Troubling You, Ep. 1015 Dec 01, 2023
    Show notes

This one’s for all you verbal processors–people who have to talk about something in order to figure out what you really think about it (raising my own hand here). There’s just something about how you say stuff to another person that can come straight off the truth, like a wind that comes down a mountain. You’re not overthinking, you’re just talking and boom, there it is.

Today I’m sharing three ways to get your verbal processing fix–one free, two that you pay for. For those times you need help thinking clearly, you’ve always got these three tools at your disposal!

[Thinking Straight]: 2 Questions that Help You Hear What You REALLY Think, Ep. 1014 Nov 29, 2023
    Show notes

When you can tell that you’re not thinking clearly about something it can be so frustrating!

Here’s what I’ve learned–it’s not trying to think the same thing, just harder, that helps you think more clearly. It’s thinking differently. Which…how do you do that exactly?

I’ve got two questions to ask yourself that help you do just that.

[Thinking Straight]: An Easy Morning Ritual to Clear Your Head, Ep. 1013 Nov 27, 2023
    Show notes

Sometimes there’s just so much stuff rattling around inside your head that it’s hard to sit with one thought. Today I’m sharing the morning ritual I’ve been doing that has helped me extract all that noise from my brain and put it somewhere where a) I don’t have to think about it anymore and b) get some objectivity on those thoughts.

It’s part of a week of episodes dedicated to thinking straight–something that can feel really hard when life is moving a million miles an hour.

This practice comes from the classic self-help book, The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. Grab a notebook and a pencil!

[Pump Up Your Partnership]: How to Be Less Annoyed by Your Partner’s Quirks, Ep. 1010 Nov 20, 2023
    Show notes

What if the things that your partner does that drive you crazy suddenly didn’t annoy you so much anymore? Because we all have things about our partner that make us nuts. Today’s big idea is that the flip side of the things that initially draw you to someone and that you value about them the most is often exactly what drives you the craziest. It’s the yin and yang of life--the very thing that draws you to someone is also the thing that repels you.

[Your Thorny Qs, Answered]: How Can I Stop Spinning My Wheels?, Ep. 1009 Nov 17, 2023
    Show notes

Ever felt like you’re running as fast as you can, but you’re still not getting anywhere?

That’s how a listener named Nicole was feeling. She wrote:

“At the end of every day I feel like even though I was busy all day, I didn’t do anything that’s getting me any closer to my goals. After going to meetings, running errands, making dinner, walking the dog, answering emails–I’m wiped out but don’t feel like I really have any progress to show for my efforts. Sometimes I find myself wondering, how do I stop spinning my wheels?”

I talk Nicole through a little audit where you answer 8 questions about what’s going on in your life right now. Those questions are:

    1. What am I enjoying the most right now?
    2. What am I enjoying the least?
    3. What feels really gratifying right now?
    4. What feels like a waste of energy?
    5. When I think about my life over the next year or so, what excites me?
    6. When I think about life over the next year or so, what weighs me down?
    7. Is there something I need to keep in mind about this particular point in time?
    8. Is there something that would really help at this particular point in time?

At the end of the day, it’s up to each of us to stay focused on what matters to us. I hope these questions help you do just that.

[Your Thorny Qs, Answered]: How Do I Stop Getting Too Involved?, Ep. 1008 Nov 15, 2023
    Show notes

Today I’m answering a listener question that I think a lot of women can relate to.

Camille from Canada writes, “Lately I’ve realized that I spend a lot of time–too much time–and energy on worrying about other people. I love being a good friend and family member to others, but I’ve been feeling really frazzled lately, and like I’m not paying enough attention to my own life and needs. Does it make me a bad person if I want to do less for the people I care about? How do I stick to my own lane?”
