Modern Fertility Co-Founder Carly Leahy on disrupting the future of fertility for women and tactical advice for starting a startup Aug 25, 2020
    Show notes

Today I’m joined by someone I’ve been admiring from afar for a very long time, Carly Leahy, co-founder of Modern Fertility. Modern fertility is a women’s healthcare company that set out to launch the world’s first at home fertility hormone test in 2017 alongside Afton Vechery. Since launching they’ve successfully gone through Y-Combinator, raised 22 million dollars in funding, been named as Fast company’s number 1 company for innovation in healthcare and expanded their product range to a pregnancy test, an ovulation test and an app for women to track their cycle. Their mission is to empower women to understand their bodies and their fertility in an easy to digest manner, that takes out the fear you can experience when going through this important milestone in a woman’s life.

Carly’s background in lead creative roles for huge companies like Uber and Google has been a major factor in the success of this business. Her skill in creating and marketing a brand for the modern day woman really shines through and in this discussion you’ll find so many tactical pieces of advice and information that you can take directly into your own venture.

How to finance a brand without giving away equity & overcoming adversity, with Vivian Weyll, Founder of Joie de Viv Aug 23, 2020
    Show notes

After losing her first business through a relationship breakdown, Vivian got straight back in the game working on her second and most cherished jewellery brand Joie de Viv. After learning about the jewellery industry and the dark side of gold and diamonds, she set her intentions to create a brand full of transparency, being completely ethical and sustainable.

Viv invested 1 million dollars of her own money and started creating her new venture, but what she didn’t expect was to launch and be met with zero sales. She shares the real heartache of going through major ups and downs in business and how she came out the other side.

We also talk about a company that’s been critical in her success, Wayflyer. They offer revenue based growth financing for commerce brands of up to 500,000 to support inventory purchases and scaling through performance marketing without taking any equity. It’s a great solution for brands who are doing well and need cash injections on an ongoing basis.

How this Kickstarter campaign raised $2M and created a world-first product, with Emma Rose Cohen, Founder of Final Aug 19, 2020
    Show notes

Joining me on the show today is Emma Rose Cohen, the founder of Final - the company who advocates for sucking responsibly.

In 2018 Emma set out to create the world’s first collapsable straw and make an impact on our oceans and the planet. She launched her idea on Kickstarter with the goal to raise around $12,000 and instead it went absolutely bonkers, raising 2 million dollars in total with around 100,000 straw orders. You might think it was a good enough reason to celebrate, but there were plenty of hurdles that came with it’s success.

Today we’re chatting about what makes a good kickstarter and what happened after the campaign went viral. Why it’s important to protect your intellectual property against the manufacturers who are out there specifically to steal your ideas and flood the market with cheap knock offs, and how to set your own campaign up for success.

Driving global change with Mera McGrew, Founder of Soapply Aug 05, 2020
    Show notes

Joining me on the show today is Mera McGrew, the founder of Soapply. Soapply is a purpose driven business that’s doing good in the world both on a local level and a global level.

Mera started Soapply to make the best soap for your skin and our planet, and they use every sale to help improve and save lives around the world. Every ounce of Soapply is tied to a direct donation that funds water, sanitation and hygiene around the world. More specifically, every 8 ounces of Soapply sold is tied to a $1 donation— that goes towards a local grassroots organisation in Ethiopia called REST.

Mera started this brand with a big idea and a mere $5,000, and has grown it into what it is today entirely through partnerships, experiential events, word of mouth marketing and hustle.

And if you’re inspired by this episode and want some Soapply for yourself, Female Startup Club listeners can get 20% off their first Soapply purchase and unlock a double donation attached to their order when they use the code FSC20 at checkout at soapplybox.com.

Talking the power of female leadership & how we need to evolve, with Susan Griffin Black, Founder of EO Products Jul 28, 2020
    Show notes

Susan is the founder of a company called EO, which stands for essential oils. They produce body, skin and hair products made from active botanicals that are scented with essential oils. They also have a sister company called Everyone, which is the more accessible line that’s affordable and for everyone.

Susan’s been in business for a very long time, 25 years to be precise. She launched EO as a 4 piece collection to Bloomingdales from her garage in 1995, all while being a a single mum and hustling every single day to pay the bills and keep the lights on, fast forward to today the business still remains independently owned by her alongside her co-founder Brad and pulls in around 50million dollars in revenue each year.

If you’ve been listening to my podcasts you’ll already be familiar with the kinds of topics I touch on; we talk about the origin story, the marketing, the challenges, the money… and all that good stuff is totally jam packed packed into this episode, but what I loved most about my conversation with Susan is the key pearls of wisdom dotted throughout. Like the importance of pursuing the journey and the actual day to day of building a business rather than the pot of money at the end, and the why it’s critical as we move forward in the world to have women in complete control of their lives and being at the forefront of leadership.

This was such an amazing conversation and I’m so excited for every ear that finds this episode. And please do share it with anyone you think will benefit from this story.

How the founder of LASHIFY built her empire through innovating in the lash industry (with 70+ patents along the way!) with Sahara Lotti Jul 23, 2020
    Show notes

Sahara Lotti is the total badass inventor and founder behind the award winning DIY lash extensions company, Lashify. And when I say that this is a must-listen episode - I truly mean it. It’s real and it’s raw and Sahara shares so much of her journey and the challenges she’s faced along the way; if there’s only one podcast you listen to this week - please make it this one.

We talk about the absolute importance of patents and the ins and outs of how people can screw you over in any industry, how she actually found her manufacturer. (Spoiler alert: it involves karaoke and Celine Dion hits), the controversy that surrounded her brand in the early days that almost ended in a cancel culture moment (not ok) and the effects that had on her life and her mental health and investing $100,000 into a black-owned hair care brand. Plus so many incredible pieces of actual gold. Actual gold!!

These are the learnings of a woman who has a clear mission and isn’t afraid to chase her dreams.

Full disclaimer: the audio quality is questionable, but hey...tech can be a nightmare sometimes and this episode is more than worth it. Your ears need this. Trust me.
