Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

Using Breathwork In ED Recovery with Samantha Skelly (Outweigh) Jun 04, 2022
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Samantha Skelly, Pause Breathwork CEO & Founder, is our guest today. She shares with us her eating disorder journey and how breathwork led to healing & recovery. Samantha had been on 50 different diets in 4 years, she was always excited about going to bed so that she wouldn't think about dieting & anxiety…not a fun place to be…but so many of us can relate! She then started reading books and listening to people who had gotten past their ED, and then found breathwork, which was the final piece of the puzzle to get her into full recovery! Breathwork can be a great tool for those with eating disorders or disordered eating behaviors.

Breast Cancer, Garth Brooks, & Living Life to the Fullest with Lesly Simon Jun 02, 2022
    Show notes

Amy’s guest today is a dear friend from the music business: Lesly Simon! We are so thankful to have Lesly on sharing her breast cancer journey and the motto she adopted for herself the day her world changed: "This is a wonderful day. I've never seen this one before." - Maya Angelou

Lesly also spoke candidly about what it's like working for Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood and ended the chat doing '4 Things Gratitude' with Amy. We love Lesly's spirit and we hope by listening to her story it will: encourage us all to be proactive with our health, do self-exams, and life to the fullest each day.

This episode shares several listener emails from: Katie (about gratitude), Amanda (about a God hug), Aimee (jeans question), and Janet (about an Instagram DM Amy shared on the podcast a few episodes ago)!

What To Do When Loved Ones Display Eating Disorder Behaviors (Outweigh) May 28, 2022
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Week 3 with Crystal Lunenschloss (MS, RDN, LDN, CEDRD) is all about addressing this listener email that Amy recently received:

Amy, I have a good friend who, pretty clearly, is battling an eating disorder. When we go out to eat somewhere, she often asks the server many questions about what’s in the food and then orders something and doesn’t eat any of it. She makes excuses saying she’s “never hungry”, but I, as her friend, am worried. She is underweight and I have noticed some of the behaviors you have talked about from your days with disordered eating. Do I gently say anything to her, perhaps that I am concerned? Or do I not say anything at all? I just hate seeing her this way and want to let her know that I am concerned, but in a loving manner. Do you have any idea on how to approach her about the situation? I would love your thoughts!!! Thanks, Anonymous (we omitted her name for privacy)

Crystal became a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian to help people reconnect and heal their relationship with food and their bodies and we are SO THANKFUL that she joined us the last 3 weeks with her wisdom. We look forward to having her back on!

What Is Breathwork & Why We Need It with Samantha Skelly May 26, 2022
    Show notes

CEO + Founder of Pause Breathwork, Samantha Skelly, is Amy's '4 Things' guest today and she's here to enlighten us on what it would look like to incorporate breathwork into our daily routines. After a life-changing trip to Bali, where she was introduced to breathwork, she made it her life's mission to teach the world to breathe...and she says that breathwork will be bigger than meditation & yoga!

She even leads us through some breathwork during the episode. We hope you enjoy this and add breathwork to your tool box of things you can bust out if you're feeling anxious &/or stressed.

"Sometimes a deep breath and a loud scream is the perfect remedy." - Samantha Skelly

The Power of Empathy + Are You Oversharing? (5th Thing) May 24, 2022
    Show notes

Welcome to the '5th Thing' with Amy & Kat!! Today’s quote: “Power of empathy: I’m in it with you. I’m not here to fix you. I’m not here to feel it for you. I’m here to feel with you and let you know you’re not alone.” -Brene Brown

Amy reads a few listener emails: one about connection & sharing things, one about a co-worker conflict, and another about evolving (which FYI: if you’re not evolving, you're dead!)

Kat gives us something to keep in mind when it comes to what we share publicly (like on social media or other platforms): “There is this culture that our whole lives can be exposed if we want them to be.” (Sometimes just sharing a small detail is more powerful than giving it all.)

Walker & Laney Hayes: The Best Love Song. Blessing Others. Grieving the Loss of a Child. Practicing Gratitude. May 20, 2022
    Show notes

We’re revisiting our conversation with Walker and Laney after having such a special conversation with Walker earlier this week!

Singer/song-writer, Walker Hayes (who wrote our theme song! + the #PIMPINJOY song 'Joy Like Judy') and his wife Laney join Amy for all 4 things this episode. You might laugh. You might cry. The parents of 6 kids let us in on a lot and we are so thankful that they took the time to share it all. FIRST THING: Amy is obsessed with Walker's song “Don’t Let Her”, which was written about Laney. Every girl would love for a guy to write her a song like this. Its genius. Sorta sad. But genius. And very sweet. A must listen!!! SECOND THING: Blessing others is fun. Walker & Laney have been on the receiving end, but now they are on the giving ned. They are paying it forward with their "Be a Craig Fund" that was inspired by their friend (named Craig) that blessed them with a van for their big family at a time when they were financially strapped and they didn't have a car with enough seatbelts for everyone. "Be a Craig Fund" now allows them to pass the blessing of a new car on to other people that need a little help. THIRD THING: Walker & Laney open up about the heartbreaking journey of losing their daughter Oakleigh during birth. They share about how they are getting through the grief process in hopes that it can be helpful to others who may be going through something similar. FOURTH THING: “Life ain’t always pretty, but hey its pretty beautiful thing!” Through the good and the bad...Walker & Laney practice gratitude...so they each share 4 things they are thankful for.

Be sure to check out WalkerHayes.com for his music, more information on the Be A Craig Fund, as well as the awesome merch mentioned in this episode.
