Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

The Reason Amy Has Trust Issues (5th Thing) May 16, 2023
    Show notes

Today's quote is from Annie Gottlier: "When some things go wrong, take a moment to be thankful for the many things that are going right." Amy pulled this from the '4 Things Gratitude Journal' along with this one from Jessica Honniger: "What if all you ever wanted is what you have right now? Gratitude is the byproduct of contentment." Both quotes are so good...Jessica's got Amy thinking about contentment and what that really means. Her favorite definition of it is: peaceful satisfaction!!! However, she did NOT have peaceful satisfaction the other day when she found out how much it was going to cost to fix the leaking pipe at her house OR when she realized there were raisins in her oatmeal cookies. Kat gives her opposing stance on raisins and they both share 4 things they are grateful for in this episode. Focusing on gratitude is a game changer. It doesn't ignore the situation, but redirects things.....to get back to that peaceful satisfaction faster!

They also go over a couple of listener emails from Julie and Katie. Julie wanted to get the 'Lucky Days' poem that Amy's sister, Cristi wrote because she wants to frame it in her house. It's such a special poem, so Amy decided to read it again for those that have never heard it or may need to hear it again. Katie wanted to know where to get the buffalo necklace that was mentioned a few weeks ago!

Hope you enjoy the episode & have the day you need to have!

P.S. The '4 Things Gratitude' journal is a great way to practice gratitude and a thoughtful gift for someone too! ALL proceeds go to Project Medishare in Haiti where they provide education for children and prenatal and postnatal care for moms & babies. Haiti is really suffering right now, so they could use our help. If the journal is something you've been thinking about getting...now is the time. There are two cute color combo options. Why You Stopped Trusting Yourself (and how to earn your own trust back) (Outweigh) May 13, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: Have you ever gone to start a new plan or program, and on the surface you're gung- ho -- ready to take it by the reins, deeply committed, and hoping (praying!) that this time really IS different -- that this will be the 'the thing' that changes everything for you...

...but secretly in the back of your mind, you're WAITING for it to fail?

Perhaps you're even outright EXPECTING it to fail, because you know in your heart-of-hearts that even though the plan or the program itself might be different....

...you know deep down that YOU haven't changed -- that you haven't gotten your mind, your head, your brain, and your heart aligned in a way that WOULD cause things to be different?

Don’t worry, you are SO not alone. This is one of the most common struggles that women have today when it comes to their relationships with food, their bodies, and themselves.

In this week’s episode of Outweigh we are going to get you clear on exactly why this happens (why you lose trust in yourself or in the possibility that it will ever get any better), and how you can finally shift this for good.

    Link Mentioned:

Watch the Stressless Eating Webinar where Leanne walks you through her exact 5 Step Game Plan her clients use to heal themselves from the all-or-nothing diet mentality for good....but WITHOUT restricting themselves, punishing their bodies, (and definitely WITHOUT ever having to use words like macros, low-carb, or calorie burn) 😉

Affection In Relationships. Being Misunderstood. Stress & Digestion. Aging Positively. May 11, 2023
    Show notes

FIRST THING: Have you ever just sat and stared your partner or a friend in the eyes? You might end up trying it out after listening to this episode. Affection in a relationship with a partner or a friend (or even a pet!) might mean trying new things like the "slow blink" method to connect. It also might require conversations or research because not everyone shows affection in the same ways. We all need affection. Giving it, as well as receiving it, helps us feel good!

SECOND THING: Do you feel misunderstood on text at times? Amy had a communication mishap over text this week and she realizes that it all could have been avoided if the person could have heard her tone from the beginning. Misinterpretation is caused by perception. And because perceptions are unique to each of us, it’s inevitable that misinterpretation will happen to us all…so maybe having difficult conversations on text should be avoided?!! Amy also defines the true meaning of an emoji that she is always confused by when people send it.

THIRD THING: Do you want less stress and more flow? Less stress and better gut health? Amy shares 5 holistic ways to reduce stress from a doctor and then a 6th way with Tina Anderson, founder of Just Thrive. Amy takes (and pays for with her own money) the Just Thrive probiotic every day and has for the last 2 years (along with their Gut-4-tify). She recently added their Just Calm to the mix. Tina joins Amy to talk about Just Calm because stress is impacting our digestive system and our cognitive health. We are all about anything that can help us stay calm and clear when we feel stressed...and that's where Just Calm comes to the rescue. Tina has given ‘4 Things’ listeners a code…just enter 4THINGS when you check out HERE & you’ll save 20%!

FORTH THING: Are you okay with aging? If you’re not, you should start being okay with it. Why? Because researchers from the Yale School of Public Health discovered that thinking positively about the aging process can slow cognitive decline in older adults. They found that people who held “positive age beliefs” were more likely to recover from mild cognitive impairment than those who didn’t. Amy used to not be okay with aging, but now she’s into it and can’t wait to see what her 40s and 50s bring!! Just remember no matter your age…you are useful to society, work, family, etc…

Hope you’re having the day you need to have!!

New Beginnings & Enough With the Overthinking...Nobody Gives a Crap (5th Thing) May 09, 2023
    Show notes

Two ducks showed up in Amy's backyard and she thinks it's a sign. Kat isn't so sure about it though...she thinks Amy needs to call animal control. Amy tries to convince her by sharing the meaning of seeing ducks, as it totally matches her life right now:

"Two ducks are also generally seen as symbols of new beginnings or change. This is because they have the ability to adapt to new environments easily and quickly. They are also known for being able to find food and shelter in even the harshest conditions. As such, they can be seen as a reminder that no matter what challenges we face in life, we always have the potential to overcome them."

The two in Amy's yard are clearly in love and going to have ducklings....similar to Kat & Big P!!

Obviously the quotes (yes, multiple) for this episode are duck related, like this one: "Be like a duck. Calm on the surface, but always paddling like the dickens underneath." - Michael Caine

Amy even shares a handful of duck jokes. This is our fav: Why did the duck go to the chiropractor? To get his back quacked.

A listener named Sarah emailed in to share that she's so thankful that she learned about Mel Robbins by listening to the 5th Thing! Mel posted this quote the other day and we love it: "Enough with the overthinking. Nobody gives a crap. Do it." Amy & Kat go over a few recent posts from Mel including one about ADHD & and one about knowing that you need to do something, but being too scared to do it!

Thanks & Have The Day You Need To Have!!!

Is Social Media HELPING or HARMING Your Self Esteem? (And Your Relationship with Food and Your Body) (Outweigh) May 06, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: I believe that I can tell a lot about a woman's emotional health based on how much time she spends on social media. I know that might sound a little bit weird, but social media has a bigger impact on your mind, brain, self-esteem, and self-image than you might think.

And THAT is the elephant in the room that I bring up on today’s podcast: Facebook and Instagram and other forms of social media (if you allow it) can be used as powerful tools to connect, share parts of your life, and keep your finger on the pulse of the lives of people that matter to you. But if you're not careful, they can easily become a weapon of comparison-itus, unattainable standards, isolation, and loneliness.

On top of that though, for people out there that ALREADY struggle with self-esteem, body image, or self-worth, I believe it can be even MORE dangerous. And that’s why I felt called to simply have a conversation about it and take a look at how it is TRULY impacting us.

In this episode of Outweigh, I teach you some valuable distinctions that will help you discover if you are the one influencing it, or if it is the one controlling you. I even give you an action plan on how you can take back ownership of your Social Brain and how to ensure that you have a healthy ‘relationship’ with social media.

    Show notes

Does it ever feel like food or sugar has a magnetic pull over you when you’re bored, sad, lonely, or stressed?

If you’ve ever felt out-of-control when it comes to food and sugar, then this episode is for you!

    We will cover:

    • How you’re not really weak-willed, a self-sabotager, or a sugar addict – even if you THINK you are.
