Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

Use This ONE Word for a More Fulfilled Life + Say This ONE Phrase For Emotional Peace + Do This ONE Thing to Spread Joy Jun 08, 2023
    Show notes

How do you feel about your self-awareness? 95% of people think that they’re self-aware, but only 10-15% actually are! Amy shares a simple fix to increase your self-awareness for a more fulfilled life. This "simple fix" is based on research done by Dr. Tasha Eurich and it all boils down to one word. Amy's cousin, Amanda, joins in on this chat and they both share their experience with this one word and how it's impacted the way they look at their lives.

The "Let Them Theory" is so simple, you’re going to start using it right away!! It’s a simple phrase that will give you freedom! When you say "Let Them" - you're giving yourself permission to let others do whatever it is that they want to do. You are free from trying to control them. This phrase creates emotional peace for you and a better relationship with the people in your life. Shout out to Mel Robbins for teaching this to us!

Spreading joy is another thing that can lead to a more fulfilled life. We’ve teamed up with BUILDING HOMES FOR HEROES to help veteran USMC Corporal Aaron Mankin and his 2 children. Our LIMITED EDITION Patriotic PIMPINJOY Line is on sale tomorrow (FRIDAY, June 9th) at BobbyBones.com and TheShopForward.com/pimpinjoy – 10a eastern / 9 ct / 8 mt / 7 pt.

United States Marine Corps Corporal Aaron Mankin enlisted in the military out of his hometown of Rogers, Arkansas in 2003, right at the onset of the war in Iraq. He proudly served his country until he was medically retired in 2008. On May 11, 2005, while deployed near the Syrian border of Iraq, Corporal Mankin’s vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device (IED). Since then, he has undergone 70 surgeries throughout his recovery to better his face, hands, and arms. He sacrificed so much and deserves this new home so much. Thank you for shopping PIMPINJOY if you're able to help...and you will get these items in time for 4th of July!

    Amy's Near Death Experience (5th Thing) Jun 06, 2023
    Show notes

This chat ended up being a PSA to set up your emergency contacts in your phone ASAP if you haven't already done it. However, you might want to make sure that you select people that will actually respond if an SOS gets sent out. Amy for sure needs to rethink hers...since she basically could have been murdered or kidnapped this weekend...and nobody would have saved her.

    - Don't sleep on Facebook Marketplace, it has some good finds!

    - Is Amy supposed to change her name because Brown isn't her maiden name?

Learning to Love My Body Will Take Time, But I'm Okay With That (Outweigh) Jun 03, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: We're bombarded with pressure to look a certain way. It can be overwhelming and constantly worrying about your appearance can distract you from living your life. Amy wants you to feel empowered by rejecting these thoughts and to start practicing radical self-love! To help you REFRAME things, Amy shares positive affirmations/mantras that will help you on your journey towards loving yourself more: mindy, body and soul! The goal of the affirmations is to train your brain to overcome self-sabotaging thoughts. Reframing takes time, but you are worth it, and it can start with 1 simple affirmation (although Amy shares several for you to work with!) Amy also closes this episode out with 2 journaling prompts that will help you have more positive thoughts about yourself and gratitude for your body!

Unprocessed Pain Will Make You Sick (5th Thing) May 30, 2023
    Show notes

Amy once went away for a 3-day intensive at a hotel with a therapist that she had never met before because she was so desperate to process an immense amount of pain she was dealing with. She knew that avoiding it would eventually make her sick…like cheesecake zipped up in a Chanel purse. Our negative emotions get zipped away when we don’t deal with them and sit rotting in our bodies. Pain is a part of life, but suffering doesn’t need to be, so finding a way to process negative emotions is imperative.

Watch the ‘Cheesecake in a Chanel Purse’ analogy HERE !!

Amy and Kat also talk about brainspotting, EMDR, The Body Keeps the Score, Kat’s feelings about Starbursts (because of the quote for this episode: “Never let anyone treat you like a yellow starburst, you are a pink starburst!”), Blinkist (a way to “read” a book in 15 minutes), manifesting an interview with Mel Robbins & co-hosting Good Morning America with Robin Roberts, and more + bonus quotes!!

Are You Using Food & Exercise As A Weapon? (Outweigh) May 27, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: I’ve been on diets and weight loss programs since the age of 7.

I got really good at outsmarting whatever plan or program I was on.

I got really good at “fake it till you make it” and motivational pump-me-ups.

I got really good at tricking the scale, tricking my stomach, and tricking my mind.

I got really good at living my life hungry, tired, miserable and restricted.

Yup I mastered them alright, but there was a major cost.

Food was the boss of me.

    And...

I was a slave to my brutal workout routine to ensure that I didn’t gain anything back.

Because no matter how motivated or disciplined I got myself to be on a day to day basis, food and exercise still ruled my every move.

So how can YOU tell if you’re using food and exercise as a tool to get yourself healthy? Or...

...if you’re using it as a weapon: a weapon of punishment, control, restriction, or shame.

In this episode of Outweigh we talk about four tell-tale signs to help you discover if you too are using food & exercise as a weapon AND if so, how you can change that!

This One Thing Changed Amy's Life for the Better May 25, 2023
    Show notes

Amy's friend, Chase, joins her for this talk because this same "one thing" has changed his life for the better too! This one thing = stillness!! What is stillness? Well, achieving stillness looks different for everyone, but it requires the mind, body, and spirit to slow down!! All three parts of us have to slow down so much that we quiet our minds enough to receive intuitive guidance, hear from God, and get into the flow.

Amy's preferred methods to get still are mediation, prayer, journaling and this mantra from Gabby Bernstein: "Stillness is my key to success." This mantra/belief has been a game changer for Amy. She thinks more clearly, surrenders with ease, feels more peace, sees the bigger picture, is more fulfilled, and the list goes on!!!

In a nutshell, this episode is simply Amy and Chase having an open and honest conversation about stillness, aligning with God, faith, love, fear and more. Hope you enjoy it!!

Intuition 101: God, May I Be a Vessel of Service? May 24, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome to Soul Sessions! Amanda Rieger Green invites you on a journey to explore your intuitive development- deepening your connection with your higher power, the universe, God, or faith in an effort to better know yourSelf and feel aligned with your soul’s evolutionary path.

Intuition takes courage, practice and dedication. As children, we come onto the planet highly intuitive and curious. For some people that sticks, and for others it’s underdeveloped or halted at times based on life experience. Amanda is going to show you how to build and strengthen your intuitive muscles while developing a community where we can get curious and have fun together in our own self-exploration.

This week, Amanda shares her journey through the dark night of the soul, which blocked her from the sunlight of the spirit. Dealing with old traumas through alcoholism, addiction, depression, and anxiety, Amanda wasn’t living an aligned life or feeling connected to God and source energy. When she came to a place of compassionate surrender, she started developing hope and the desire for peace- wanting to heal, live clearer and more aligned with something greater.

While her gifts are organic, they didn’t happen overnight. Amanda was using her intuitive gifts in a leadership capacity in the healthcare field and eventually could not deny her soul’s calling to support others in channeling and focusing their divine spark. Amanda wants to share practical tools & techniques to help you learn to embody your innate wisdom. She tells the story of her first time reading spirit for someone she didn’t know which affirmed her God-given gifts, sparked deeper personal meaning, and helped her know that we are not alone.

Join us on this journey – be curious, ask questions, get your spiritual light turned on, and learn to live authentically yourself!

Amy's Weird Bet with Her College Boyfriend (5th Thing) May 23, 2023
    Show notes

Careful planning that ensures a consistently good mood = curating anticipatory joy. Kat is all about this, but Amy is a proud type B and isn't trying to control or plan out her fun/joy. Anticipatory joy is so important to Kat's well-being that she plans her life in such a way that she almost always has something to look forward to!! Are you like Kat or like Amy??

Speaking of planning things, Kat is working on her bachelorette party and Amy is feeling her "Coastal Grandma" theme. They want it to be cool and a good time, but also not be out late, as that would result in exhaustion upon return and nobody has time for that. ha.

QUOTES FROM THIS EPISODE:“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if you let them be. When I look at a sunset, I don't find myself saying, "Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner." I don't try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” ― Carl R. Rogers

"Anticipatory joy is often greater than the joy brought to us by experiencing the very things we anticipate. This is often because what we expect an experience to be like is often not what it's like and the difference between our expectations and reality mutes our experiential joy. But it's also because anticipating a pleasure is itself intrinsically pleasurable." ― Psychology Today
"Did you know a loving, connected conversation with someone will turn on genes that shut off inflammation? Your mind is the most potent pharmacy ever , and it will either drive inflammation or it will stop inflammation simply by your thoughts." ― Dr. Mark Hyman

EMAILS: April reminding us to not downgrade big things that we're doing in life!! From this note Amy & Kat realized that they both ran the same exact St. Jude half marathon/full marathon back in 2013 before they ever even knew each other!

    - Lauren who gave us a good whey protein recommendation that is lactose free so Amy doesn't have to only use her "goat's whey" powder! This leads to a memory from Amy's college days and a weird bet she made with her college boyfriend that involved a protein powder oatmeal situation.

Why Weekend Self Sabotage Is ‘A Thing’ (And What To Do About It) (Outweigh) May 20, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: For the first (near) 30 years of my life, my relationship with food had 2 'modes'.

    ✔️ On

    -OR-

    ❌ Off

There was no middle ground for me. I was either walking around day-in, day-out as:

👮‍♀️ My Inner Food Police: 🚨

Micromanaging every morsel of food I ate or thought about eating. Controlling myself, restricting myself, punishing myself, and persuading myself not to eat certain things because they were "bad" or "not healthy". Obsession. Harsh judgments. All that shame, blame, guilt, comparison, and perfectionism...

    -OR-

🍨 🍕My Inner Rebel (See also: Inner Glutton!) 🍩🍔

Carefree abandonment – eating whatever I could get my hands on. Gluttonously over-stuffing myself. Binging on the weekends. Utter lack of care of my body, what I ate, how I moved, and my health in general. But also feeling like I had to "get it all in" over the weekend before I went back into "Police" mode on Monday.

And THIS was my life for nearly 30 years!

Bouncing from one extreme to the other: I would diet and restrict until I couldn’t possibly take it anymore, and then....I would TOTALLY let myself go.

But the day came that I hit my 'enough is enough' point, and I realized that if I didn't change my STRATEGY and change the STORIES around food and my body that were keeping me stuck, this is how it would ALWAYS be!

And that scared the crap out of me, and THAT is when I knew I had to set out to change it.

    Because...

★ I was SICK of all the dieting and restricting and constantly playing 'food police'.

★ I was SICK of all the judging and shaming and EMOTION that came alongside food.

★ I was SICK of hating what I had to DO, who I had to BE, and how I had to FEEL to get the "body I always wanted".

It was EXHAUSTING. And I was the OPPOSITE of FREE.

So if YOU are still stuck on that on-again, off-again roller coaster with food or your body or your emotions, I'm here to tell you:

There IS a better way! And you don't have to live like this!

And that’s why I break down what’s happening deep down in your BRAIN when this happens...and how to stop it in its tracks.
