Feeling Things with Amy & Kat

Feeling Things with Amy & Kat is a podcast for anyone who’s ever had feelings—or wants to. Hosted by Amy Brown and therapist Kat Van Buren, this is a space where nothing is off-limits. From deep reflections on childhood to pop culture obsessions to what’s happening in the world, all feelings deserve a seat at the table—big, small, awkward, joyful, confusing, and everything in between. At its core, it’s real friends having real conversations about real feelings. Some episodes go deep, some stay light, but all are rooted in curiosity, honesty, and connection. In a world that moves fast, sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause… and feel things.

    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: In the first episode of "Beyond the Mirror: Fashion's Role in Self-Love and Body Image," Leanne brings on Sarai White to take you on a journey into the world of fashion as a powerful tool for healing your body image. Drawing inspiration from iconic makeover shows like Oprah, Sally Jessy Raphael, and Ricki Lake, Sarai shares how she first explored the art of dressing for the body you have -- rather than feeling shame about the body that you DON'T have.

Sarai shares her personal journey from "fitness to fashion" and how it played a role in experiencing herself and her clients (where she witnessed firsthand) the profound impact of choosing clothing that complements and celebrates your unique beauty.

They'll uncover how it's not just about having a stylist or a massive budget; it's about selecting clothing that enhances your natural features AND contributes to your own healing journey with your body. The best part? You can do the same for yourself!

Throughout this episode, they discuss the importance of understanding your unique body, using clothing as a confidence booster, and providing practical tips on selecting outfits that suit your body type and personal style.

They'll also talk about the incredible transformation that's possible when you look through the lens of fashion as a tool to discover more self-love & healing.

    Show notes

Do you share your location with friends or family/spouses?? Amy & Haley sit down for an OG episode with all 4 things being different and the FIRST THING is tracking locations of loved ones! Haley has location services on for all of her friends...too much true crime has made her this way. There's also a girl on TikTok going viral for her "controversial" rules that have kept her relationship strong and 1 of those rules is that both of them have their phone location turned on "at all times" for "convenience and safety." SECOND THING: Amy shares an easy thing you can do to make new friends based on research. This leads to a conversation about pet peeves and common daily stressors that annoy us! THIRD THING: A Stanford neuroscientist claims THIS morning routine "makes you better at everything" so Amy goes over his step-by-step rules for an "optimized" morning routine! FOURTH THING: When you go for a walk, do you always have your earbuds in? You may want to leave them at home next time. Amy & Haley talk about why "silent walks" are good for you and why psychologists are encouraging people to take walks sans music, etc...

The Cost of Skinny (The Truth About What the Diet Mentality is REALLY Costing You) (Outweigh) Sep 16, 2023
    Show notes

OUTWEIGH: In this eye-opening episode of Outweigh, we take a deep dive into the untold truths about the "Cost of Skinny."

Leanne reflects on a pivotal moment in her own life, a major spine surgery at just 25 years old, which she endearingly calls the "Cost of Skinny." It's a powerful reminder of how the relentless pursuit of an idealized body image can lead to devastating consequences.

For years, Leanne was fixated on attaining a 'skinny,' 'lean,' 'toned,' or 'hot' body, drowning out the critical signals her body was sending her. Ignoring the screams for self-care, she pushed herself to the brink until her body couldn't take it anymore.

But that wasn't the only cost she paid. The "Diet Mentality" she had embraced for decades had inflicted additional invisible wounds:

★ A Food Prison: Constantly toggling between restrictive eating and carefree indulgence, caught in a cycle of obsession and guilt over every morsel of food.

★ A Body Prison: Feeling trapped in a body that didn't align with her true self, hiding behind oversized clothes, and allowing her body to dictate her life.

★ A Shame Prison: Carrying the burden of shame for struggling with food and body image, believing she was fundamentally flawed.

★ A 'Fat Head': A self-image tainted by negative self-perception, no matter how much weight she lost or how successful she became.

Leanne knows that her experience is far from unique. Every woman stuck on the diet and weight loss roller coaster is unknowingly paying their own "Cost of Skinny." In this episode, we dissect the ins and outs of how to break free from this destructive cycle, providing insights and strategies to help you avoid your own "Cost of Skinny" and embark on a journey toward self-acceptance, self-care, and genuine well-being.

    A Bacon-Loving, Hebrew-Speaking Jew Steps Into A Church Sep 12, 2023
    Show notes

In this next episode Leanne takes you on an unexpected and deeply personal journey of spiritual discovery. She shares a bit about her upbringing, and what caused her to feel a yearning for something more, leading her to explore her own spiritual path. She emphasizes the importance of embracing one's unique journey and adapting language to fit your own personal experiences and beliefs.
Throughout the episode, Leanne explores the diverse paths to faith, drawing from her experiences working with clients from various backgrounds who grapple with their relationship with their own connection with God and spirituality. She reflects on the power of words and the significance of inner experiences over specific faith-based terminology. Leanne's connection to her Jewish heritage and love for Israel sets the stage for a twist of fate that propels her toward faith, highlighting the transformative power of surrender and the impact of worship music.
The episode truly comes to a head when Leanne shares a pivotal moment on a paddleboard, where a song's lyrics lead her to straight to her knees, praying for help and discovering a deeper sense of the concept of "surrender" she had been searching for. This experience prompted her to make a brave and profound transition from the fitness industry to a faith-based approach to emotional transformation, ultimately trusting in God's guidance (even if she wasn't calling that presence 'God' at the time).

Leanne shows us the importance of stepping into the unknown, embracing uncertainty, and finding trust in God, even when the concept is new. As she explores Christianity and attends Crosspoint Church in Nashville, her open-hearted approach to worship music and teachings shows us that there is this universal search for connection and completeness.
