FOF #2961 - Karen Lewis’ Big Mouth is Big Trouble May 25, 2021
    Show notes

Karen Lewis’ big mouth is getting her into big trouble. Designed like a giant mouth with fangs for the Burning Man festival in 2005, Karen’s giant interactive sculptural bed is just waiting for some lucky owner to sink their teeth into it.
Titled “The Bed in Your Head” this big bed piece of art looks like a set piece from a Rocky Horror Picture show themed Disney park ride. Measuring 11 x 13 feet, and 12 feet tall, this bed is looking for a new home, and lots of folks are demanding she hand over the toothy sleeping sculpture.
Today artist Karen Lewis joins us to talk about “The Bed in Your Head,” her big fluffy mouth shaped bed sculpture that’s got a life of its own, and why people are obsessed with this big giant mouth.

FOF #2960 - Henry Cavil and the Curse of Superman May 21, 2021
    Show notes

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a curse? Doing something great often comes with a heavy burden, because when you’re seen as divine, people expect miracles all the time. Just like the actors who have played Jesus on TV or film, the people who brought Superman to life have often been plagued with terrible misfortune.
Henry Cavill, the latest to portray the Man of Steel on film, recently tore his left hamstring during a shooting of the Witcher and posted a graphic x-ray of his thighs and booty to the thrill of his fans on social media.
But more bafflingly is his latest cry for help when he shared a photo of his girlfriend Natalie Viscuso, saying that people’s “harmful speculations” about his “private life” just aren’t true. Great Caesar's ghost! What in pink kryptonite is he talking about?
Unlike Ben Affleck, Chris Evans or Hugh Jackman, who seem to enjoy the speculation that they are gay or bi, Henry Cavill is taking a more regressive approach by declaring that the rumors, whatever they may be, are “causing harm” to the people he cares about most: himself.
Today we’re taking a look at the Superman and the Jesus curse: the misfortune that follows actors who bring these “perfect” god-like figures to life for entertainment.

    FOF #2959 - I’m 50 and I Like to Kick! May 19, 2021
    Show notes

When it comes to aging, nothing makes us laugh like Molly Shannon’s endearing Sally O’Malley character from SNL triumphantly stating “I’m proud to say I’m 50 years old, I’m not one of those gals who’s afraid to state her real age, and I like to kick, stretch and kick!”
We love the character for embracing her silver years with panache. But for many gay men, aging can filled with fear and worry about loneliness, isolation and lack of visibility.
Today therapist and relationship expert Damon L Jacobs joins us to look at turning 50 with power, purpose, and pleasure. Damon just hit the 50 year mark himself and wrote a fabulous collection of blogs on growing older with style inspired by the movie The Breakfast Club.

Ménage à What? Tristan Taormino on the Myth of Equality in Relationships May 19, 2021
    Show notes

How many are in your party? For some people monogamy is just right, but for a growing number of people, open relationships is where they find true happiness.
We are raised on fairy tales of a handsome prince rescuing a fair maiden and then they live happily ever after, but how close is this image to real life?
As gay people, we try to reinterpret that image of monogamous marriage in our fight for gay rights and marriage equality. There is even a new study that shows that GLBT youth want to be married and have kids by the age of 30.
How many people are truly satisfied by having one lover for their entire life?
Tristan Taormino - Opening UpTristan Taormino, award-winning author, columnist, pornographic film director joins us to talk about her new book “Opening Up: A guide to Creating and Sustaining Open Relationships.”
    BUY THE BOOK: https://amzn.to/3ykpzBb
Tristan studied over a hundred polyamorous people, in a sort of Kinsey Report on non-manogamy. Tristan interviewed in person, over the phone and by email, people who were content and settled, and others who were at a crossroads in their relationships.
She discovered that all the people engaging in this lifestyle “exude an above-average level of sexual and emotional satisfaction -something that in my experience and observation seems to elude a lot of people.”
Tristan Taormino loves her FOF tSo how do you convince your wife to have a three way with the nanny, or the pool boy?
Well, it can be a very difficult topic to bring up because relationships are often viewed as sacred and some people are not going to react well to even bringing the topic up. Tristan recommends you start slow and put little feelers out there to see if they are the same wavelength. Of course, you have to make sure the person you are currently involved with has good self esteem otherwise you are in for a lot of trouble and soul searching.
Join us as we chat with Tristan about the tips and tricks on open relationships. We talk about how you design an open relationship, the pitfalls of an nonmonogmay, keeping it fresh five or ten years later and what to do if one person is kinky and they other is not.
There is a lot to take into consideration if you are going to turn your relationship into an open one. For example, what do you do if one person is attracted to it and the other isn’t? Is coming out as polyamorous like coming out of the gay closet? What do you do when someone reacts negatively to your identity? And what about the children, do the kids even care?
Tristan Toarmino is the niece of famous American author Thomas Pynchon, so of course we just have to ask her what he thinks of her work.

FOF #2958 - Eartha Kitt and The Divas Who Raised Us May 18, 2021
    Show notes

A mother is anyone who channels feminine energy to nurture people and love them unconditionally. For many LGBTQ+ folks, we’ve had to seek out that energy when we didn’t get enough from our own mothers. Sometimes we found it in an auntie, a friend or mentor, but oftentimes, it was the divas in showbiz that raised us.
From the singing divas like Eartha Kitt to Shirley Basey, to open lesbian stand up comedians like Sandra Bernhard and Moms Mabley, to the hilarious redheads of television like Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball, these women cranked up the mother goddess factor like no other and brought up generations of queer youth.
Today Alexandra Gray joins us to reflect on all the great mommies who loved us, from Diana Ross who taught us to stop in the name of love to Madonna who told us to justify our love.

Lady Vera Parker aka Thomas John as a Scam Psychic May 14, 2021
    Show notes

One of the more outrageous moments on Feast of Fun was back in 2009 when our friend Teri Yaki told us the tale of Lady Vera Parker, a drag queen who got getting arrested and pleaded guilty to fraud for posting fake apartment ads on Craigslist and stealing the security deposits from renters. When she was caught, Lady Vera Parker was living in a UHaul truck with all her drag.
Local Chicago folks were shocked by the news and it wasn’t long before the scene gave Lady Vera Parker the cut.
We never thought we’d hear from her again, then almost a decade later, Lady Vera Parker popped up and she was still scamming people but now as psychic Thomas John.
Today, skeptic and psychic buster Susan Gerbic joins us to talk about how she and a group of colleagues created Operation Pizza Roll to prove that Thomas John was not a psychic and that he based his readings off of information he gleaned from social media.
Listen as we take a look at how people double down when they realize they are being scammed, why drag queens love campy psychics like Sylvia Browne and Miss Cleo, and why most psychics find it hard to walk away from robbing people.

    Show notes

One of the most talked about episodes of our podcasts was this outrageous moment where Chicago drag queen Teri Yaki talked about the scandalous life of drag queen Lady Vera Parker. Here’s an encore presentation, enjoy!
Drag queen Lady Vera Parker moved to Chicago with the hopes of making it big as an entertainer. Last week, her dreams were dashed when she was pulled over in U-Haul truck she allegedly stole in Kentucky. When the police pulled up her record they found a laundry list of check fraud and deception warrants. She’s now being held in Cook County Prison awaiting trial.
What happened? On today’s show we’re talking to Kevin Pipkins, best known as Chicago drag queen Teri Yaki.
Kevin’s worked with the now infamous Lady Vera Parker and is here to explain in detail, what, to the best of his knowledge, happened and what the future holds for this John Waters villain come to life.
If you think we’re being too hard on her, remember the crimes she’s being accused of and the people she allegedly robbed.

FOF #2957 – James Fritz Takes on Cryptocurrency and Safe Spaces May 12, 2021
    Show notes

Cryptocurrency: anything can be used as cash if you get creative enough. Cigarettes in prison, jugs of Tide detergent to pay your dealer, your body and soul at work, or cryptocurrency. When something is highly desired and in limited quantity, it can be used as money, honey.
Cryptocurrencies use computing power to create a finite amount of coins, then rely on an online ledger with strong cryptography to secure all online transactions.
We all heard supervillain wannabe Elon Musk yap on and on SNL about Dogecoin and Bitcoin. Even Tiger King’s Carole Baskin is in on the act with her $cat coins. But why does this all sound so shady?
Today James Fritz, who was called the funniest comedian in Chicago a decade ago, comes back on the podcast to look at the weird world of cryptocurrency and the controversy surrounding Elon Musk hosting SNL.

Chris Crocker on How Leave Britney Alone Happened May 05, 2021
    Show notes

Chris Crocker turned to the internet to escape the torment of being chased by gangs of boys at the mall.
The internet helped him connect with the greater world around him when he couldn’t create a gay-straight alliance in his school and he left to be home schooled. To grow up a gay, eccentric and flamboyant teen has never been easy especially in a small conservative town in Tennessee.
If it weren’t for the internet where would Chris Crocker be?
    {Best of Feast of Fun, FOF #756 - Chris Crocker Tells on You - 05.08.08}
Today Chris is one of the most watched and imitated video bloggers online. His iconic video of himself weeping and imploring the public to “Leave Britney Alone” made him a household name.
Chris’ videos represent the dramatic change we’re seeing in how we create and consume media.
Chris’ videos are just as popular as the YouTube Presidential debates or the evening news. For millions of people everywhere, his opinion matters.
Despite this, old media companies are threatened by Chris popularity because of his bold desire to express himself at any cost. They can’t control him and he doesn’t need them.
Chris Crocker and a big giant V Chris Crocker takes on the Bible - who will win? Chris Crocker looking fierce
It’s easy to question the authenticity of Chris’ videos because he’s just that good. He’s eerily in touch with his dark emotions and quickly cuts through the hypocrisy of the “haters” with his wit and words.
Chris Chrocker looking eerily looking like Matthew Sheppard“Leave Britney Alone” proves to be one of the most emotionally over the top videos I’ve ever seen online. I believe Chris cried not so much for Britney Spears but rather to express the pain and suffering he endured having gone through the hell of homophobia as a teenager. In many ways, Chris Crocker represents the tortured gay youth who fought back and lived.
Chris Crocker really is a huge fan of Britney Spears, even though she has conservative leanings and a complete lack of interest in gay rights of any kind. Remember, she was FOR the War in Iraq and said in many interviews that we should “stand by our President” despite his reckless policies.
Chris sees something bigger inside of Britney. He believes her to be a liberal person trapped by the conservative world around her.
Chris Crocker is a divaPeople can’t leave Britney alone or any other tragic celebrity for that matter because they help us cope with our everyday problems. When we see someone richer, more attractive and more powerful than us struggling to hold on, it makes it easy to come to peace with our place in the world.
On today’s show Chris Crocker joins us to talk in-depth about his popular video blog, his passion for following people’s horoscope and how he may team up with Puerto Rican TV astrologer Walter Mercado to reach a hip, young new audience. We also talk with Chris about how he personally deals with the vicious hate online and offline, what he thinks of all those parody videos of his work and where in Los Angeles you should hang out if you want to hook up with Chris.
And we put to rest the rumors surrounding Chris’ HIV/AIDS conspiracy as a government biological weapon gone wrong and being vilified for simply being himself and being good at it!

FOF #2956 - Translocas: Puerto Rican Art Gender Warriors May 04, 2021
    Show notes

With the high visibility of drag queens on TV and social media and (even this podcast) there’s an idea that drag is just another form of show business, but it’s so much more.
For Puerto Rican queens or “Locas” as they are known, the call to do drag often stems from the pressure to survive as an artist in a very dangerous world.
Larry La Fountain’s new book Translocas: the Politics of Puerto Rican Drag and Trans Performance gives us a deep look at how Puerto Rican performers use drag to explore race, class, poverty and gender.
Today Larry La Fountain, professor of queer and Latinx studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor joins us to take a look at the Translocas we love: from Ru girls like Nina Flowers and Monica Beverly Hillz to trans pioneer Sylvia Rivera to other fabulous performance artists like Barbara Herr, Lady Catiria, Javier Cardona, Freddy Mercado and even Larry’s alter ego Lola Von Miramar.
    Plus--

➤ With POSE on FX wrapping up the third season, what’s going to happen to the careers of trans Latinx actors like MJ Rodriguez and Indya Moore?
➤ Vejigantes, the horned masked tricksters from carnival celebrations in Puerto Rico. Are they drag queens too?
➤ And singing and dancing Puerto Ricans come to Hollywood with two major motion pictures hitting the big screens this year: In the Heights and Steven Speilbergo’s remake of West Side Story.
