Leon Benjamin is running for the Congressional seat in Virginia's 4th District, which is the home of the Faithful Politics Podcast! Will (Political Host and a Democrat) has a conversation with Leon about his candidacy. While these two men may not agree on much politically, their conversation models the same behavior the show seeks to encourage. Civility.
Leon talks about his America First focus and what life was like as a spiritual adviser to the former President Donald Trump. The current incumbent is Donald McEachin (D), and Leon makes it clear how he would be a different candidate by discussing his platform centered around issues of faith, prosperity and the lifting of all peoples. Will also asks Leon some questions submitted by listeners, and they end the conversation by talking about the prospects of Trump running in 2024!
Whether you live in Virginia's 4th district or not, Leon Benjamin is a name that you'll likely hear again, whether or not he wins in November. Make sure to stick around to the end to hear Leon rap for the show!

"Reading Evangelicals: How Christian Fiction Shaped A Culture and Faith" w/Daniel Silliman, Christianity Today Jul 05, 2022
    Show notes

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com

Who are evangelicals? And what is evangelicalism? Those attempting to answer these questions usually speak in terms of political and theological stances. But those stances emerge from an evangelical world with its own institutions—institutions that shape imagination as much as they shape ideology.

In this unique exploration of evangelical subculture, Daniel Silliman speak with Will and Josh about how Christian fiction, and the empire of Christian publishing and bookselling it helped build, is key to understanding the formation of evangelical identity. With a close look at five best-selling novels—Love Comes Softly, This Present Darkness, Left Behind, The Shunning, and The Shack—Silliman considers what it was in these books that held such appeal and what effect their widespread popularity had on the evangelical imagination.

Reading Evangelicals ultimately makes the case that the worlds created in these novels reflected and shaped the world evangelicals saw themselves living in—one in which romantic love intertwines with divine love, humans play an active role in the cosmic contest between angels and demons, and the material world is infused with the literal workings of God and Satan. Silliman tells the story of how the Christian publishing industry marketed these ideas as much as they marketed books, and how, during the era of the Christian bookstore, this—every bit as much as politics or theology—became a locus of evangelical identity.
    Guest Bio

Daniel Silliman is the news editor for Christianity Today. He earned a doctorate in American studies from Heidelberg University in Germany and has taught US history and humanities at Heidelberg, Valparaiso University, and Milligan University.

Cassidy Hutchinson, former senior aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, testified that President Trump said, “You know, I don’t even care that they have weapons. They aren’t here to hurt me.” Her testimony came during the January 6 Committee hearing on the investigation of the attack on the U.S. Capitol. This is the sixth in a series of hearings - after months of closed-door investigations - detailing the committee findings on the January 6 attack. Ms. Hutchinson shared her experiences of the days leading up to and after the attack, including President Trump’s alleged altercation with Secret Service in the back of the presidential limo because the Secret Service refused the president’s demands to go to the Capitol after his rally speech

    "Let's Talk About Sex...ahem...I mean Gender" w/Dr. An Pham Jun 28, 2022
    Show notes

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com

In the last and final installment of our Pride Month special called, "Be Curious, Not Judgemental", we speak with a doctor who provides gender affirming care for children.
During the Supreme Court confirmation hearing for Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) asked “Can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman’?” as she questioned Jackson about a transgender athlete. Depending on where you sit politically will likely determine your level of response to her answer, “Can I provide a definition? No. I can’t,” responded Jackson.
In this episode, we discuss several issues regarding gender that have made their way into mainstream media. To start us off Dr. Pham discusses the important role of providing gender affirming care to children, and dispels some often cited myths about what that care actually includes. We then have a much broader conversation about gender, and how we should view it. Lastly they discuss how transgender issues aren't just a new phenomenon but rather something that has always existed, but is just now getting the attention it deserves.

The House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol held the fourth of a series of hearings. Members focused on an alleged effort by former President Donald Trump and others to pressure officials in key battlegroup states in an attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. State political leaders and election officials from Georgia and Arizona described the pressures they faced from the former president and his allies to decertify the election, as well as the harassment and threats they, their colleagues and families have experienced from supporters of the former president. The hearing also featured videotaped depositions from election officials who shared their stories, as well as never-before-seen footage of protestors outside an election official’s home.

"Colorful Conservatism" w/Casey Flores, President Log Cabin Republicans, Richmond Jun 20, 2022

Despite what you’ve heard, did you know that the Republican Party has a caucus of folks with a proud history of fighting to build a stronger, more inclusive Republican Party? LGBT Republicans and straight allies have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside, working to overcome the forces of exclusion and intolerance with a group called the Log Cabin Republicans.

This is the third installment in our four-part pride month series called, “Be Curious, Not Judgmental”.

In this episode Will and Josh speak with Casey Flores, the Log Cabin Republican President of the Richmond, Virginia chapter. They discuss what it’s like being a member of the Republican Party, especially when there are numerous instances that would make this membership counterintuitive. The way that Casey explains it, is that their membership actually helps the broader LGBT community. The guys then pivot to discussions about the "Parental Rights in Education", colloquially known as the “Don’t Say Gay” Bill, and how the Log Cabin Republicans actually helped craft some of the language.

The Log Cabin Republicans have been around for a long time, and Casey helps explain its origins. You might be surprised to learn about which President is linked to its founding!

This was a fun episode to record and definitely highlights the diversity in the Republican Party!

For more information about the Log Cabin Republicans visit: https://logcabin.org

    LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS HISTORY

Log Cabin Republicans have a proud history of fighting to build a stronger, more inclusive Republican Party. LGBT Republicans and straight allies have chosen to transform the GOP from the inside, working to overcome the forces of exclusion and intolerance.

The name of the organization is a reference to the first Republican President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, who was born in a Log Cabin. President Lincoln built the Republican Party on the principles of liberty and equality under the law. The party should return to its roots. When the organization was founded, the name, “Lincoln Club,” was already taken by another GOP group, so organizers instead chose the name Log Cabin Republicans.

President Trump's Campaign to Influence Vice President Pence

January 6 Committee Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) said “ Thanks in part to Mike Pence, our democracy withstood Donald Trump’s scheme and the violence of Jan. 6.” The chair’s remarks came as he delivered his opening statement during the January 6 Committee hearing on the investigation of the attack on the U.S. Capitol. This is the third in a series of hearings - after months of closed-door investigations - detailing the committee’s findings on the attack. While testifying on the pressure then-Vice President Pence was subjected to by former President Trump and attorney John Eastman, former counsel to Vice President Pence, Greg Jacobs said that the vice president was urged multiple times by the president and Mr. Eastman to reject the electors prior to the joint session of Congress, even though the vice president consistently said he did not have the authority to do so. Also testifying before the committee was Judge Michael Luttig (ret.), an unofficial adviser to Vice President Pence.

Note: This episode was recorded before Bishop Megan resigned from the ELCA
Continuing on in our Pride Month series, "Be Curious, Not Judgemental" we talk with Bishop Megan Rohrer. Rohrer (who uses gender-neutral singular they pronouns) was the first openly transgender minister ordained in the Lutheran tradition. In this conversation we hear Bishop Megan talk about their early life, and how "coming out" isn't just a singular event, but rather an evolution that occurs over time. Pastor Josh then asks Bishop Megan about their hermeneutics (Bible interpretation) and if that poses any challenges to the lifestyle they live. The show ends with a powerful testimony from Bishop Megan about their concerns for their own safety and the safety of their kids. This conversation was deeply inspiring and we hope that people of faith who have traditionally wrote off people of faith in the LGBTQIA community listen. We were blessed to have spoken with Bishop Megan and feel that the work they do is vitally important!
    Guest Bio:
The Rev. Dr. Megan Rohrer served as the Bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod (ELCA). The first openly transgender Bishop in a major Christian denomination, Megan is an award winning filmmaker, musician and historian, Megan was a finalist for the Lambda Literary award, received an honorable mention as an Unsung Hero of Compassion by Wisdom in Action, with His Holiness the Dali Lama and has been featured on Queer Eye, Cosmo (see the video to the right), People and in Wittenberg, Germany for the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.
