"Benghazi!" w/Ethan Chorin, Former Diplomat to Libya Sep 06, 2022

From 2004-2006, Ethan Chorin was one of a handful of US diplomats posted to Libya in the wake of rapprochement with Colonel Gaddafi. Six years later, he was in Benghazi (planning to meet the next day with Ambassador Chris Stevens) when the U.S. mission came under attack—an event that still reverberates through American domestic politics and foreign policy in disturbing and unexpected ways, as Chorin explains in his new book BENGHAZI! A New History of the Fiasco that Pushed America and its World to the Brink.

Despite hundreds of hours of Congressional hearings, a deep dive into Hillary Clinton’s personal email, and the trial of two suspects (ultimately acquitted), there are many unanswered questions about what happened in Benghazi on September 11, 2012. Until now.

To tell this story, Chorin draws on his own bone-chilling experience during the Benghazi attack, his expertise as a former diplomat and scholar of Libyan history, and new interviews with Libyan insiders, eyewitnesses, and various senior Obama officials, including Hillary Clinton. Democrats and Republicans agree on little when it comes to Benghazi, but both sides are likely to find themselves feeling vindicated by some of Chorin’s revelations and conclusions, while strongly contesting others.
His new book, "Benghazi! A New History of the Fiasco that Pushed America and its World to the Brink" is available for sale September 6, 2022.

    Guess Bio:
Ethan Chorin is a Middle East and Africa-focused scholar and entrepreneur. He is known as a leading analyst of Libyan affairs, and for his applied development work in the Middle East and Africa, in the area of environmental science and healthcare.

"Dark Seid of the Courts" w/Andy Kroll, ProPublica Investigative Journalist Aug 30, 2022
    Show notes

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com

Barry Seid (pronounced “side”) and Leonard Leo are two names you likely have never heard of but is worth your time becoming familiar with. Mr. Seid was the former CEO of Tripp Lite, an electrical products manufacturer before donating a record $1.65 billion to a new conservative nonprofit led by Federalist Society co-chairman Leonard Leo. Mr. Leo was an integral part in shaping the conservative courts during the Trump administration, with over 200 Federalist Society appointees, and played a huge role in the Supreme Court’s super majority. This week we chat with Andy Kroll (investigative journalist with ProPublica) who broke this story, and we have him break down what all of this means for the courts in America.

Here's the article we referenced: https://www.propublica.org/article/dark-money-leonard-leo-barre-seid

    Guest Bio:

Andy Kroll is a reporter for ProPublica covering voting, elections and other democracy issues. He was previously the Washington bureau chief for Rolling Stone. His reporting there about a series of cyberattacks on congressional campaigns helped lead to the indictment of a California political operative. Before that, he was a senior reporter at Mother Jones, where his work on self-dealing during the Trump presidency sparked multiple congressional investigations. Earlier in his career, his investigation of a powerful law firm that profited from pushing borrowers out of their homes helped shut down the foreclosure mill and spurred Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to cut ties with similar foreclosure law firms across the country.

In September, Kroll will publish his first book, “A Death on W Street: The Murder of Seth Rich and the Age of Conspiracy,” a true-crime investigation about U.S. politics, viral conspiracy theories and one family’s fight for truth.

**This is a special midweek episode!**
In a unprecedented act, the DOJ performed a search and seizure on former President Trump's Mar-a-lago property in Florida. The search came after months of failed attempts by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to retrieve protected documents covered under the Presidential Records Act. To help us better understand what the laws mean, and how it may affect the presumptive 2024 Presidential nominee we speak with one of the country's top attorneys who specializes in National Security, Bradley Moss. Mr. Moss has represented a number of clients in the federal government, media and defense contracting industry and has been a trusted voice in making sense of what happened at Mar-a-lago. He recently wrote an op-ed on Fox News arguing why the search was justified. https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/trump-mar-a-lago-search-justified
    Guest Bio:
Bradley P. Moss specializes in litigation on matters relating to national security, federal employment and security clearance law, as well as the Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act. He is a frequent media commentator in print, radio and cable news, addressing pending policy and legal issues in the national security and government transparency arena. Mr. Moss is a member of the Bars of the District of Columbia and the State of Illinois, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and the U.S. District Courts for the District of Columbia, the District of Maryland and the Northern District of Illinois.

"Before the Religious Right" w/Gene Zubovich, Professor of History Aug 23, 2022
    Show notes

Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.com

When we think about religion and politics in the United States today, we think of conservative evangelicals. But for much of the twentieth century it was liberal Protestants who most profoundly shaped American politics. Leaders of this religious community wielded their influence to fight for social justice by lobbying for the New Deal, marching against segregation, and protesting the Vietnam War. Gene Zubovich shows that the important role of liberal Protestants in the battles over poverty, segregation, and U.S. foreign relations must be understood in a global context. Inspired by new transnational networks, ideas, and organizations, American liberal Protestants became some of the most important backers of the United Nations and early promoters of human rights. But they also saw local events from this global vantage point, concluding that a peaceful and just world order must begin at home. In the same way that the rise of the New Right cannot be understood apart from the mobilization of evangelicals, Zubovich shows that the rise of American liberalism in the twentieth century cannot be understood without a historical account of the global political mobilization of liberal Protestants.
    Guest Bio:
Dr. Zubovich is the author of Before the Religious Right: Liberal Protestants, Human Rights, and the Polarization of the United States.

He is Assistant Professor of history at the University at Buffalo, SUNY and a 2021-22 Kluge Fellow at the Library of Congress. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley.

He is a historian of the modern United States and writes about the history of US and the World, religion and politics, and human rights. His writings have appeared in leading academic journals and in public-facing newspapers and magazines. He is now writing a global history of the US culture wars.

This week Will and Josh speak with Professor Kate Carte about the early rise of religion in America. Starting from the earliest colonizers to present, religion has played a key role in shaping the fabric of society. In some cases for the good, but unfortunately more so to the detriment of others. In this conversation Professor Carte takes us on a journey through some of these highs and lows, to include the origins of the term "witch hunt"; a phrase we've heard used quite often in the past several years!

We know what we're saved from, but what are we saved for? Join us today as Faithful Host Josh interviews Jake Meador, editor in chief of Mere Orthodoxy as we talk through his book “What are Christians For?” Where we take an in depth look at what Christianity could look like in our new culture today.
    Bio from Jake Meador:
I’m a fourth-generation Nebraskan and lifelong Lincolnite. I studied at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, finishing a BA in English and History in 2010. I wrote my thesis about Kwame Nkrumah, a mid-20th century Ghanaian politician. In the time since then, I’ve written about place, politics, culture, and the ways that Christian faith speaks to all of the various questions that those topics raise.

My writing has appeared in First Things, Books & Culture, Christianity Today, Commonweal, Front Porch Republic, National Review and Fare Forward. My primary online home is at Mere Orthodoxy, where I serve as the editor-in-chief. I am the author of two books, In Search of the Common Good: Christian Fidelity in a Fractured World and What are Christians for?: Life Together at the End of the World. I also have the pleasure of serving as a contributing editor with Plough and as a board member with the Davenant Institute.

When I am not working, I enjoy following Premier League soccer (my team is Tottenham Hotspur), college football (go big red), attempting various cooking and baking projects at home, and spending time with my wife, Joie, and our four kids. We are members in a local PCA church, which has been my denominational home since 2007.

Faithful Politics wanted to ensure that everyone had the chance to hear the case that is being presented to the American public by the January 6th Committee . We will be posting the episodes unedited, with the exception of the breaks.
“For 187 minutes on January 6th, this man of unbridled destructive energy could not be moved,” said January 6 Committee Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) of President Trump’s perceived unwillingness to act on January 6th. His remarks came as he delivered his opening statement during the January 6 Committee hearing on the investigation of the attack on the U.S. Capitol. This is the eighth in a series of public hearings - after months of closed-door investigations - detailing the committee findings on the January 6 attack. During her closing testimony, Vice Chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) touched on the former president’s supporters, saying, “he is praying on their patriotism,” and that “on January 6th, Donald Trump turned their love of country into a weapon against our capitol, and our constitution.” Testifying before the committee on President Trump’s actions and response to the attack on the U.S. Capitol were former Deputy National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger and former White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews.

We'll be back next week, but in the meanwhile, check out this amazing conversation our friend, Corey Nathan, over at Talkin‘ Politics & Religion Without Killin‘ Each Other Podcast had with John Popper from the Blues Traveler, and special guest co-host Matt Lewis from The Daily Beast.
From Talkin‘ Politics & Religion Without Killin‘ Each Other:
John Popper is a singer, songwriter and one of the world's greatest harmonica players. He's the longtime frontman of Blues Traveler (which happens to be one of, if not my favorite band ever!) and has jammed with any number of virtuosos across multiple genres of music.
