Existennial is a short show that muses on meaning for the millennial stuck in an existential crisis otherwise known as a Tuesday. 🙃 With warmth & wit, we’ll investigate intentional living through a smorgasbord of science, spirituality, psychology, philosophy, pop culture, shower thoughts, and eavesdroppings. Talia Pollock is a writer, armchair philosopher & storyteller. Formerly the host & author of “Party in Your Plants,” which put levity into eating well—her focus is now abolishing phony-baloney living to make depresh less by valuing our values more.

[party in my plants] 119: Combining Mantras & Movement with Erin Stutland Nov 29, 2018
    Show notes

In the same way that somebody once combined peanut butter and jelly to make a flavor combination arguably more desirable than sex, and in the same way another person combined a leggings with jeans to give our fashion-forward legs some freedom, my guest today has combined metaphysics with physical fitness in a way that can pretty much most def help you get things that you desire. Erin Stutland has created a method of combining movement with mindfulness in an actually do-able, not too woowoo-able way. Erin is an author of the upcoming book “Mantras In Motion: Manifesting What You Want Through Mindful Movement,” a fitness coach and creator of the Shrink Session program, the TV show host of Z Living’s cable series, Altar’d, all about true and lasting transformation. I’ve gotta say that this here chat with Erin has had a true and lasting impact on me. Kind of like how once you discover how harmoniously PB&J go together, or once you try on jeggings, you can’t UNtaste PB&J or smile as you put on regular jeans, after hearing Erin’s strategies for paying attention to what the heckers you say to yourself while you’re working out, you won’t be able to NOT sweet talk yourself through your next sweat sesh.

    Get psyched to hear:

    • Why mantras* are so powerful
    • How combining mantras with movement is legit magic
    • *WTF a “mantra” actually is and how to hook yourself up with your own
    • A story that straight up proves manifestation
    • How and why it’s ok to push yourself to exercise
    • The weirdest and most surface level about a coat
    • Why it’s weirdly tricky business figuring out what we actually desire
    • A realistic way to get on the mantra + movement train right this second
    • Some tough love for my sister to get into a sweat habit (!!!)
    • And lots more!

[party in my plants] 118: A Lesson in Saying THANKSforGIVING Us Pain to Turn into Purpose (and to Tune us into Wellness). with Brittany Piper Nov 22, 2018
    Show notes

My guest today is a survivor, speaker, activist and storyteller. She’s a wearer of many hats. Which we get deep into in this chat. This is also a deep chat in many other ways because my guest and darling friend Brittany Piper has overcome not just one, but many of the most horrific events any of us could imagine: sexual assault, eating disorders, the death of her brother and alcoholism. Brittany, not to sound cliche, turned her pain into purpose and is now a leading national expert speaker on sexual violence and prevention, as well as a healing and wellness coach. She uses her story of adversity, resilience and triumph to empower and inspire women to take brave action in their own lives and communities and she uses her story of trauma to inspire me in this interview to OWN my own stories even more than I already own my own stories, and I hope she inspires you in this chat to own yours too. And to watch more Law and Order SVU.

    Press play to hear:

    • How Brittany miracuously decided to see her trauma as a gift.
    • The importance of OWNING your stories (and how that relates to ice cream!).
    • That more experiences than you might think count as trauma. And why that’s ok. Even good?
    • How to maybe stop using alcohol as a tool, if you are?
    • How to use letter writing as a form of self love.
    • Why sharing is way more than caring.
    • A few good Law and Order SVU analogies.
    • How breath and plants are legit a form of healing from trauma.
    • And a lot more!

[party in my plants] 117: Becoming More Chill Around Food, Not Going Nuts on Nuts & Living Like a KWEEN, with Ali Bonar Nov 15, 2018
    Show notes

Today’s guest relationship with food used to be nuts. Her relationship with nuts used to be nuts, too. But neither of those things are nuts anymore, as Ali Bonar has learned both, how to be chill around food and how to enjoy nut butter vibes without nuts in said butter. Ali, known on the interwebs as the AVOKWEEN, is incredibly passionate about helping other ladies regain their kween-ness and feeling body positive once and for all. She’s also passionate about dripping her Granola Butter (a product she and boyfriend invented) all over smoothie bowls. But in this breaking news conversation, Ali reveals the truth about who’s really eating the stuff she photographs! I love Ali not only because she and I both admit to having had awkward body insecurity vendettas over high school volleyball shorts and not only because she sat in her car to record our entire interview, but also because she, too, believes in the importance of telling it like it freaking is thank you very much, and in this fun conversation, I think, and I hope, we told a lot of things like they freaking are thank you very much!

    You’ll hear:

    • All about portion distortion and how to stop having it.
    • What being a KWEEN is all about, and how to be more “kweeny?”
    • What being chill around food looks like...and doesn’t look like.
    • How Ali realized she had nutrition information overload, and how she unloaded.
    • A strategy for scrolling social media more consciously.
    • A secret behind all that food porn you’re seeing

    • And lots more!

[party in my plants] 116: How I PIMPed My Wedding (Party in My Plants’ed it) / How I Had a Healthy Wedding :-) Nov 08, 2018
    Show notes

This episode is all about how I PIMPED my wedding! Meaning, how I added lots of plants to it. And also, how I made it uniquely mine. And even more, how I didn’t let my healthy habits compromise my happiness, nor let the happiness of my wedding drive me away from my health.

I hope this episode sheds a little light on some literal, tangible, recreatable things I did to infuse the prioritization of my wellbeing into a wild thing like a wedding. You’ll hear a little about my journey from sad girl dreading her eventual wedding day because she’d be too depressed, bloated or sick to enjoy it to a happy lady who just had her wedding day feeling more calm, healthy and confident than she ever could’ve imagined. Through it, I’ve learned that eating more plants than you do crap is a complete game-changer, as is prioritizing stress reduction over everything else, all while being as authentic and confidently YOURSELF as humanly possible. I’d say that’s the magic sauce. The secret sauce? MMM sauce, now i’m craving that butternut squash sauce on the gnocchi at the wedding

[party in my plants] 115: This is the Only Clean Eating Conversation You Need to Hear! with Terry Walters, 3x clean food author and OG clean eating queen Oct 25, 2018
    Show notes

As part of my October of re-broadcasting some of my favorite episodes that are related to wedding stuff since I’m currently on my honeymoon in the Seychelles, today’s guest gets a rebroadcast not just because it was one of the more prolific, helpful and inspiring episodes of this podcast thus far, and not only because it originally aired 2 years ago which is a long time ago, but because my guest, Terry Walters, was actually invited to my wedding! But couldn’t come! Which was very sad. Because I had GREAT clean food waiting for her. But she still gifted jesse and me a beautiful wooden salad bowl. Hey! Does shout out on a podcast into take the place as a Thank You Card??? I never know proper etiquette
.Anyway, Terry Walters, who just so happened to be my neighbor growing up, was one of the OG “clean eaters.” Her first book, “Clean Food” came out waaaaay before “clean” related to food in any way other than sanitary! But “clean eating” has since turned into a vague, trendy, confusing, catch-all phrase, right? Well in this episode, I egg Terry on to lay down the law about what clean eating REALLY is (and really isn’t), so you don’t have to keep hearing stuff from the organic grapevine. Oh, and spoiler alert: clean eating is pretty much the same as plant-partying! Woohoo!!!

[party in my plants] 114: An Essential Episode About Using Essential Oils to Sniff Up (or Rub Down) the Power of Plants, with Casey Von Iderstein Oct 22, 2018
    Show notes

As part of my October of re-broadcasting some of my favorite episodes that are related to wedding stuff since I’m currently on my honeymoon in the Seychelles, I’m re-airing this very oldie but goodie chat about a way to sniff up or rub down the power of plants. Because if you think eating plants is good for you, just wait till you try smelling them! Or rubbing them on the bottoms of your feet. In this exciting episode, Casey Von Iderstein, essential oil extraordinaire, mindfulness teacher and the creator of Karmic Wellness, let’s all the cats out of all the bags about how using essential oils (the stuff in plants that make them smell) can make your life REEK of awesomeness. Straight up, this interview, which I originally did two years ago, changed my life. I’ve been using oils ever since! Not perfectly - as you can learn more about in episode #97 called “True Story: I Plant-Poisoned My Pup!” Yup
so I wanted to circle back with Casey and get a precise plant oil protocol for both my wedding day and my African honeymoon travels! So this episode is updated! Listen through to the end to hear what Casey laid out for me as the ESSENTIAL oils to essentially, keep one stay healthy, happy, relaxed and sane through big events like weddings and long adventures like Africaaaa!

    Get pumped to learn:

    • How and why to live your life from a mindset of “doing your future self a favor.”
    • Exactly how and why essential oils actually work (from a semi-sciency level).
    • The best way to use essential oils on an emotional level.
    • The totally secret hiding spot to rub your oils for maximum results!
    • The 1 oil Casey would want if she were stranded on a deserted island.
    • And so much more!

[party in my plants] 113: On Shrooms Yet? Learn About the Everyday Magic of Mushrooms! with Tero Isokauppila, founder of Four Sigmatic Oct 18, 2018
    Show notes

In keeping with my October of re-broadcasting some of my favorite episodes that are related to wedding stuff since I’m currently on my honeymoon in Africa, I had to re-share this chat with a product I’m likely currently sipping with water in Cape Town right now: SHROOMS! You already heard about my fondness for the mushrooms, but in this chat you’ll hear about the functionality of them. And the science behind it. And the way that 13-generation mushroom expert Tero and his team at the company he founded, Four Sigmatic, actually makes mushroom teas that don’t MAKE you gag and actually MAKE you feel like a better, stronger, well-er version of yourself.

    Get ready to hear:

    • How, for Tero, mushrooms are basically ninja turtles.
    • What an ADAPTOGEN really is. (And FYI, it’s REALLY cool.)
    • Why mushrooms are really really good for you. And which ones you might wanna start with.
    • The real reason I crave mushrooms so hard since I’ve started drinking them. (And no it’s not because I’m “addicted.”)
    • Even though they won’t make you hallucinate, Tero considers mushrooms *MAGIC.* This is why.
    • How Four Sigmatic actually makes mushroom tea that doesn’t make you gag.
    • And much more!

[party in my plants] 112: How to Eat Healthfully at Work without it Being Work! with Tracie Kendziora Oct 15, 2018
    Show notes

As part of my October of re-broadcasting some of my favorite episodes that are related to wedding stuff since I’m currently on my honeymoon in Cape Town, I couldn’t NOT re-air an episode with a wedding guest! Whose bread and vegan butter is something so relevant right now as we’re in the throws of fall -- eating plants in a pantsuit! Or in whatever else you wear to an office. I’m in sweats and a tee right now. Am I wearing a bra? Oh wow I put one on today! Go me! Anyway, my friendship story with my guest, Tracie Kendziora, is kind of adorable - and a true testament to the power of the internet and the coolness of coaching. Tracie signed up for private coaching with me 3 years ago and we worked together for many months. Through our coaching we became more like friends than coach and coachee and eventually dropped the coaching and just kept chatting as gal pals. Though my loving encouragement, she ended up quitting her job to focus on her two passions - clean cubicle eating and hilarious wellness copywriting. Now she helps peeps with both! She also helps me now! With this here podcast! Yes, she’s gone from client to friend to contractor and she came from Florida to also tack on the title of wedding guest too, which was the first time we ever met in the flesh. I hope she knows I don’t normally wear dresses that nice... or white
.Anyway, I think this chat with Tracie about balancing wellness with work without making clean eating a second full-time job is GOLD and I hope you steal some tips and put em in your stapler drawer.

    You’ll hear:

    • The most important thing to NOT do before a meeting.
    • ACTUALLY why your coworkers make you feel guilty about your salad.
    • Awesome items to keep in your healthy desk drawer.
    • Really clever ways to move more at work! One of which I implemented immediately

    • Mason jar salads 101.
    • And loads more!

[party in my plants] 111: How to Give Less Craps about Your Pant Size. Here’s Proof That You are Way More Than Your Thighs! with Simi Botic Oct 11, 2018
    Show notes

As part of my October of re-broadcasting some of my favorite episodes that are related to wedding stuff since I’m currently on my honeymoon in Botswana, I knew this chat would be PERFECT one to bring back from the archives. Not only is it one of the top downloaded episodes of my show, and for damn good reason, but it specifically talks about a life altering epiphany that happens ON A HONEYMOON! I know, right?!?! Told you this chat would be a perfect one. But perfect isn’t really the goal anymore because this episode is all about how my guest, Simi Botic, used to let her need for perfection actually ruin a lot of great big events in her life like her proposal (which we talk about) and her honeymoon (which we also talk about) by giving way too many craps about her body. Simi freaks out a lot less now since she broke up with perfection, and in this chat, we dive alllll the way into how she did that and what the heck breaking up with perfection even means! This isn’t an arbitrary conversion, by the way, helping give up perfectionism about their diet and exercise is exactly what Simi does for a living! In addition to being a coach, Simi wrote a magnificent, hilarious and heartfelt book called Letting Go of Leo, which is truly so good that one night I delayed watching The Bachelor to read Simi’s book in bed which is the highest compliment I could give a book so there you go Simi. I love this cozy convo and I’m pretty positive you will too!

    Press play to hear:

    • How to let your mess become your success.
    • How to stop focusing on being perfect all the time!
    • Why to see failures as feedback and opportunities for growth.
    • An argument for taking yourself to couples counseling!
    • How to exercise your right to stop freaking out about exercise...
    • What Mother Teresa, Sarah Silverman, and Simi have in common.
    • A very important rule about birthday cake!
    • And LOTS more.

[party in my plants] 110: Pop! Goes the Magic Needle. Why to Try Acupuncture...Like, Yesterday! With James Rohr, L.Ac Oct 08, 2018
    Show notes

As part of my October of re-broadcasting some of my favorite episodes that are related to wedding stuff since I’m currently on my honeymoon in Botswana, this chat with my acupuncturist, James Rohr absolutely HAD to be the first chat to re-air, because getting his needles in my meridians were a significant part of my surviving the cray cray wedding process! James’ needles are my first destination when I need to boost my immunity, up my digestion game, alleviate anxiety or even, as you’ll hear, just pump my brakes and take a nap. I usually get some ‘puncture about once a month for general maintenance purposes, but in the last few months leading up to the wedding, I became an every other weeker, and then in the final month, an every weeker!! Not only do I have deep respect and admiration for his work and just acupunct as a whole, but as you’ll surely notice, James totally breaks the mold of what you might think of as a Chinese medicine healer. He’s a freaking funny dude! Half the time I’m with him I’m cracking up on his table, nervous that I’m gonna pop some needles out of me. I’m fortunate, well, we’re fortunate that James, who runs an acupuncture practice here in Brooklyn but also another one in Miami and used to be the head acupuncturist at Canyon Ranch Miami Beach, gave us so much wisdom, time and concrete reasoning behind this totally magical-woowoo-WTF-seeming healing modality that is acupuncture.

    You’ll hear:

    • Exactly what the eff acupuncture is!
    • How this magic-like treatment ACTUALLY works.
    • The #1 common ailment James treats that can alleviate so many other ailments.
    • Ways you can avoid a bogus acupuncturist.
    • That time James left a needle in someone

    • That other time James’ acupuncture treatment knocked a woman up

    • And so much more!
