    Kay McKelly was in a PhD program for sociology, feeling unfulfilled and stunted in her interest in the Internet. She left sociology for midwifery, training as a doula and home birth midwife, volunteering with the Prison Birth Project. While she loved birthwork, she didn't want to mix capitalism with it, so she turned to something new: software development.

    Sally Mitrofanov started in America from as an Uzbekistan immigrant tenth-grader without any idea what to do with her life or how to navigate the college system in a new country. She tried many different directions until she stumbled into a data science meetup in Seattle, then quit her job and hoped she had what it takes to become a data scientist.

    Sally Mitrofanov came to the US with her family when she was 15 from Uzbekistan. She studied International Studies and Economics at Towson University. Then she self-studied Actuarial Science and worked as life insurance pricing analyst for 3 years before she discovered data science. She then went through the Galvanize DSI program and landed her first job at AWS Fraud Prevention. Now she works at Microsoft in the Customer Growth Analytics group.

    For much of his life, Parshad Patel struggled with being able to focus. He stammered when he communicated, avoided group activities, and often became lost in his own thought processes. After he sought professional help, Parshad realized the importance of being vulnerable in order to empower himself to change. Now that he is both a photographer and a professional in computer vision and deep learning, he's never been more comfortable in his own skin.
