Episode 160: Justin Jones, Bovaconti and Georgia Street Grind Mar 25, 2020
    Show notes

What if businesses thought of people first? Justin Jones, a co-founder of Bovaconti and founder of Georgia Street Grind, joins us to share how he put this philosophy into practice. While the Plainfield, IN native was attending Indiana State University for a degree in biomedical technology, he recognized that debt was not worth the degree and decided to move to Rahway, New Jersey for a modeling job. After realizing that he did not fit in the modeling industry, he decided to go home only a few months before 9/11. Six months later, he returned to his side job in New York at a catering business. Justin's experience influenced him to co-found a catering business, which he sold months before the 2008 recession. At only 28-years-old, Justin moved back to Indiana to start a simpler life. He landed a job at the newly opening JW Marriot as a Banquet Captain and moved up quickly. When he reached the level of committing to a life in the industry, he decided to quit and start Georgia Street Grind and eventually, Bovaconti, to execute his values of a people-first business model. Take a sip as we learn how Bovaconti is supporting its staff during the COVID-19 outbreak, how Justin's beliefs are filtered into every facet of his business, and how fate played a role in some of the pivotal moments in his life and career.

    Episode 159: Trevor Belden, Ball & Biscuit and Baby's Mar 18, 2020
    Show notes

From drag queen breakfasts to mergers and acquisitions, Trevor Belden, lawyer and founder of Ball & Biscuit and Baby’s, shares the stories behind bringing his ideas to life. The Michigan native unknowingly sealed his fate at a young age by choosing a Purdue sweatshirt as a souvenir at Mackinaw Island. As destiny would have it, Trevor attended Purdue for his undergrad and the University of Michigan for a law degree. Trevor believes that there are rarely people that can create a career out of a topic that they’re passionate about. Rather, normal people are excited about being great, creative, and efficient at skills that can change the community. Therefore, he’s used his legal background in mergers and acquisitions at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reatch to pursue other ventures, including helping start IndyHub as a member of the Young Professionals of Central Indiana and opening Ball & Biscuit and Baby’s. Tune in to learn about how Ball & Biscuit was originally going to open in tandem with IndyHub, the musical history behind the name Ball & Biscuit, about his new family-friendly-like-a-Disney-movie-joke venture Baby’s, and how he balances it all. Episode 158: Beth McCarthy Smith, Simplicity Cold Pressed Juice and Cocktails Mar 11, 2020
    Show notes

“You’re getting healthy and happy all in one sip,” with Simplicity Cold Pressed Juice and Cocktails, founded by Beth McCarthy Smith. When it comes to cleaning up your digestive system and having life balance, Beth knows her sh*t. Around sixteen years ago, Beth started a long, frustrating journey of fertility treatments and miscarriages right after having her first baby girl. It was until she was undergoing bloodletting by an 8th generation acupuncturist that she learned, “Your blood too thick, too thick!” She went to her doctor crying and was prescribed to clean her colon. Although unpleasant, it worked. At 39, she had a baby boy and became pregnant again soon after. Motivated to maintain her healthy lifestyle and digestive system by colon cleansing and drinking juices, she decided to open the first closed colon hydrotherapy system business in Indy when she moved. Her clients would ask about what they should eat after their sessions, so she began making them juices. As one would think, poop and juice should not mix, so she opened a dedicated juice shop. Now, Beth travels back and forth from Milwaukee to cold press her famous recipes for her juice business in SoBro, Simplicity Cold Pressed Juice and Cocktails. Take a sip as Beth shares her theory on life, how her ambitious personality has improved many peoples’ health, and how delicious her new cocktail line is so that you don’t have to feel guilty for enjoying yourself. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you with Beth McCarthy Smith from Simplicity Cold Pressed Juice and Cocktails.

Episode 157: DeAmon Harges and Seana Murphy, The Learning Tree Mar 04, 2020
    Show notes

What are your talents? DeAmon Harges and Seana Murphy from The Learning Tree are leveraging this question to strengthening neighborhoods through asset-based community development. The learning tree was real. DeAmon's Uncle Buck planted it, and it became a gathering spot for neighbors to share stories and build relationships. DeAmon learned from the original learning tree and by walking the sidewalks in his neighborhood that people's stories are powerful because they reveal their talents and interests. DeAmon was looking at starting his career in something he was passionate about and recognized that he was talented at listening and storytelling. Thus, he started an organization that provided a space for people to share stories and named it after the legendary spot, The Learning Tree. While stories are told, listeners search to understand people's gifts and then celebrate them. Tune in to learn about asset-based community development, systemic racism, and how The Learning Tree is making a difference in neighborhoods and workplaces. Drink deep of the culture that surrounds you with DeAmon Harges and Seana Murphy from The Learning Tree.
