    S1 Ep59: BONING UP ON BONE HEALTH: PART 1 Feb 02, 2023
Show notes In the United States, there are 10 million women with OSTEOPOROSIS and 43 million women with OSTEOPENIA. Most of these women have no idea that they are at risk for a potentially life-changing or even fatal fracture. One reason for this lack of concern and lack of awareness is that osteoporosis is usually a “silent disease”. Today, I am going to break that silence. My guest is Dr. Kristi Tough DeSapri, an internist with a specialty and expertise in women’s bone health.
This topic is in 2 parts. This episode will focus on WHY YOU SHOULD CARE about bone health, RISK FACTORS for osteoporosis, and SCREENING RECOMMENDATIONS. Episode 61, Part 2 will focus on prevention and treatment.
    We discuss:
    • Why there is so little awareness of osteoporosis
    • The consequences of osteoporosis
    • Symptoms and early warning signs of bone loss
    • The difference between osteopenia and osteoporosis
    • How common osteoporosis is
    • When someone should get their first screening
    • Risk factors for osteoporosis
    • Why women are more likely to get osteoporosis than men

    S1 Ep56: Too Young for Menopause? Jan 12, 2023
Show notes Every day women tell me they were blindsided when they started having perimenopause symptoms in their mid-40’s since they assumed that menopause was years, or even a decade away. And they are pretty much shocked when I tell them that mid-forties is the normal time for estrogen levels to waver, or tank all together. But imagine if you enter menopause when you are in your 20’s or 30’s? This situation is more common than most people appreciate occuring in up to 3% of women.
In this episode I am joined by Dr. Hannah Short, a graduate of the University of Cambridge and a specialist in premature menopause recognized by the British Menopause Society. She is the author of The Complete Guide to POI and Early Menopause.
    We discuss:
    • The difference between EARLY MENOPAUSE, PREMATURE MENOPAUSE and PREMATURE OVARIAN INSUFFICIENCY, otherwise known as POI
    • WHY Premature Menopause occurs
    • Why POI occurs
    • The impact of ENVIRONMENTAL factors
    • Why SMOKING increases the risk of premature menopause
    • Why it is so important to DIAGNOSE and TREAT women who enter menopause early
    • If HORMONE THERAPY is prescribed in different doses or in a different amount than for women who go through menopause at a typical time
    • HOW LONG women should take hormone therapy
    • NON-HORMONAL options for women who cannot take hormone therapy

    S1 Ep51: Transdermal vs Oral Estrogens- What’s the Difference? Dec 08, 2022
