In this podcast, I’ll tell you why drinking too much water is harmful for your health. Dr. Tim Noakes is the authority in sports medicine, and this video is based on his excellent book called Waterlogged. We’ve been taught that we have to drink eight glasses of water every day, but this is in fact not true. And if you’re exercising, you’re supposed to drink much more than that!

But there is much more damage from overhydration, especially when you’re exercising, than from dehydration. There is almost no research stating that dehydration is a problem; however, there is plenty of research showing serious side effects of overhydration, also called water intoxication.

If you’re doing long-distance running, this is vital. When you drink excessive amounts of fluid, you can deplete your sodium levels. Your brain can swell. You put high stress on your heart. People have died from drinking too much water. This condition is called hyponatremia.

The symptoms of hyponatremia include worsening headache, rising body temperature (even when you stop exercising), and swelling of your hands and feet. Your body, though, has an amazing way of letting you know when you need water. Are you ready? It’s called thirst! When you’re thirsty, drink water. When you’re not thirsty, don’t drink water. Then you won’t put yourself at risk of drinking too much water.

Take Dr. Berg's Free Keto Mini-Course!

In this podcast, I’ll explain the first complication of diabetes. Maybe I should really say, the first complication of pre-diabetes! First, you have high insulin, which keeps your blood sugar normal for years. Then it creeps up a little bit. That’s pre-diabetes. And then it goes up, even more, turning into full-blown type 2 diabetes.

The complications of diabetes really have to do with something called glycation, which is when sugar binds with protein or fat. You can get glycation from food that is made up of sugar and fat, or sugar and protein, and are heated. For example, ice cream, donuts, or a hot dog or burger with a bun.

When you consume the type of sugar called fructose, that can increase glycation by up to ten times more than other sugars. And your own body can glycate too, with its own sugar.

When you take diabetes medication to lower blood sugar, where does the blood sugar go? No one talks about this! It doesn’t leave your body; instead, it gets hidden in different nooks and crannies inside you. Then it rots your body from the inside out. That’s why, even when you take diabetes medication, you still develop problems with your coronary arteries, eyes, nerves, and kidneys. So, the problem of high sugar hasn’t really been solved.

The first complication of diabetes is high insulin levels, and it gets worse from there.

One of its key functions is anything to do with protein: prevention of muscle mass loss, improvement of the collagen surrounding your joints, and providing a healthy glow to your skin.

Some people actually get it injected, which I don’t recommend because of the side effects. And it’s expensive, about $1,500 per month. Don’t buy it! Your body makes it in the pituitary gland and activates it through the liver.

In this podcast, I’ll explain the cause of your burning tongue. It’s a vitamin B12 deficiency. Of course, the question is, how do you become B12 deficient? There are several primary causes, including:

    1. Low stomach acid

    2. Gastric bypass surgery

    3. A problem in your intestines such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or Crohn’s disease

    4. Being a vegan, because B12 mostly comes from eggs, meats and organs, and dairy. If you’re vegan, add B12 in the natural form called methylcobalamin

    5. Alcohol, which is why alcoholics are often B12 deficient. In fact, anyone with liver damage will have difficulty absorbing B12

Now you can find out what’s causing your burning tongue!

GERD, also called acid reflux or indigestion, can have effects on your joints. I’ll explain it.

Your stomach’s three purposes are to help digest protein, absorb minerals, and kill pathogens. I’ll focus on digesting protein. Your stomach needs to be very acidic, with what’s called a low pH. Not only for digestion but for the valve at the top of the stomach to close. Normally you think with GERD that you have too much acid, which is incorrect. But you take an antacid, and it makes things worse. Your stomach becomes too alkaline.

There are numerous common reasons why your stomach loses its acidity: age, medications, low-salt diets, junk foods, and low-potassium foods. So, if you have GERD, it usually means you don’t have enough acid. When you do, you can’t properly digest protein. You’re not going to be able to build strong tendons and ligaments in your joints. You may also have weaker muscles, lose disc height, be deficient in collagen, and even lose protein from your bones.

Here’s what you can do to correct these issues: take apple cider vinegar in water or in a pill, take betaine hydrochloride (or even a combination of the two), and eat large quantities of vegetables to get enough potassium. As well, take sea salt.

In this podcast, Dr. Fung explains that the cause of obesity is an issue of too much insulin. Intermittent fasting results in a significant drop in insulin levels. Take away insulin, and people lose weight. Conversely, give people insulin or insulin-raising drugs, and they gain weight. To a lesser extent, the same thing happens with cortisol.

However, most people still focus on calories in, calories out as the formula for weight loss. The problem is, this fails most of the time! Common sense also says that not all foods are equally fattening. Eating the same number of calories from kale as from cookies is very different. Every time you eat, the insulin goes up. This is natural. But eating many times per day tells your body to store the food energy you’re eating as fat, because of the constantly raised insulin.

If you want to lose weight, do two things: stop eating high-insulin-provoking foods, and fast intermittently to give your body a break from constant insulin. High insulin and high blood sugar are very toxic to the body, so giving someone with type 2 diabetes insulin is counter-productive. You’re simply trading one toxicity for another.

Losing weight can help reverse type 2 diabetes. And type 2 diabetes is really a disease of too much sugar in the body. Taking insulin can lower blood glucose, but it simply forces the sugar out of the blood and into your body, causing your organs to rot away over the span of ten or fifteen years. This is why diabetes is a disease of everything!

In this podcast, I describe how to prevent kidney stones. One excellent remedy is to take phytic acid. It has the capacity to prevent the crystallization of two types of calcium, which causes kidney stones. I also recommend that you go on a low-carb diet, because high amounts of carbohydrates in your diet can increase kidney stone formation.

Eat a moderate amount of protein and a large number of vegetables, which will give you more phytic acid. Avoid spinach, chocolate, and peanuts because they’re high in what’s called oxalates that comprise one substance in kidney stones.

Take vitamin C, because it binds with calcium and prevents it from combining with oxalates to form kidney stones. It’s a myth that vitamin C causes kidney stones!

Increase your fluid intake, within reason. Drink more than you usually do but don’t overdo it. Add electrolytes. If you’re sedentary, drink more fluids because you’re more prone to kidney stones.

Drink lemon water, eat a healthy diet to ensure you get adequate vitamin B6 and increase your intake of calcium-rich foods like grass-fed dairy. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but when you take in more calcium through your digestive system, you’ll end up with less in your kidneys. The only calcium supplement I recommend is something called calcium orotate.

In this podcast, I explain what phytic acid is along with its significant health benefits. Another name for phytic acid is IP6 or vitamin B8. It forms a storage system for phosphorus in plants, bran, seeds, nuts, and grains. You’ve probably heard that fiber is good for you; well, it’s the IP6 that is the part of fiber which is good for you.

Phytic acid binds with calcium, iron, and other minerals to regulate them and prevent them from building up to toxic levels in your body. It’s a strong anti-cancer compound and the most potent antioxidant on the planet.

Here’s what makes phytic acid such a strong anti-cancer compound. With cancer, one of the first things that happen is the destruction of your mitochondria. Iron and copper combine with oxygen to produce severe oxidation in your body, destroying the wall of the mitochondria. But phytic acid makes iron and copper unreactive; in other words, they don’t create oxidation.

Avoid taking vitamin C with phytic acid, because it will reduce its effects. As well, don’t take phytic acid if you’re anemic or low in iron. Sadly, though, most people have too much iron and calcium.

Phytic acid is an excellent way to counter and neutralize the oxidative effect of metals in your body.
