Dopey: On the Dark Comedy of Drug Addiction

Dopey Podcast is the world’s greatest podcast on drugs, addiction and dumb shit. Chris and I were two IV heroin addicts who loved to talk about all the coke we smoked, snorted and shot, all the pills we ate, smoked, all the weed we smoked and ate, all the booze we consumed and all the consequences we suffered. After making the show for 2 and a half years, Chris tragically relapsed and died from a fentanyl overdose. Dopey continued on, at first to mourn the horrible loss of Chris, but then to continue our mission – which was at its core, to keep addicts and alcoholics company. Whether to laugh at our time in rehab, or cry at the worst missteps we made, Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery. We continually mine the universe for stories rife with debauchery and highlight serious drug taking and alcoholism. We also examine different paths toward addiction recovery. We shine a light on harm reduction and medication assisted treatment. We talk with celebrities and nobodies and stockpile stories to be the greatest one stop shop podcast on all things drugs, addiction, recovery and comedy pathfinding the route to the heart of the opioid epidemic.

Here is what AI said: Dopey Podcast Episode Show Notes: 🎙️🍭

Episode Title: Hamilton Morris on Psychedelics, Clack, and the Chaos of New Year’s Resolutions (with Doug Bopst)

    Release Date: 🎉 December 31, 2024

    Intro:

Dave kicks off the final Dopey episode of the year with a bang (and maybe a groan). No heartfelt resolutions here—just raw reflections on why 2024 sucked, what 2025 might bring, and how sugar is basically his drug of choice now. Oh, and there’s a surprise guest: fitness trainer Doug Bopst, called mid-recording to unpack why Dave’s obsessed with Chick-fil-A and why New Year’s resolutions are mostly BS.

But first, the real deal: Hamilton Morris, the chemist and documentarian behind Hamilton’s Pharmacopoeia, drops in to talk about everything from the chemistry of salvia to the ethics of harm reduction. It’s science, chaos, and comedy rolled into one unforgettable episode.

    Highlights:

Hamilton Morris Takes Us to School 🧠💊:
    • The Psychedelic Frontier:

      • Hamilton explains why psychedelics aren’t just “drugs” but tools for exploring consciousness.
      • How can they fit into harm reduction? And what about people in recovery?
    • Salvia, DMT, and the Bizarre:

      • Why salvia is the “weirdest drug ever” and why it deserves more respect (or fear).
      • Hamilton shares his thoughts on liquid LSD in the eyes and why he’s never smoked crack.
    • The Clack Incident:

      • Dave revisits the time he smoked “clack” (crack, but in Chinatown) with a methadone dealer named Danny.
      • “It wasn’t great, but Danny was really into it.”
    New Year, Same Chaos 🎆:
    • Dave Calls Doug Bopst:

      • Dave surprises Doug mid-recording to grill him about sugar addiction, fitness tips, and why Chick-fil-A is apparently Christian food.
      • Doug suggests cutting out processed foods and prioritizing protein—Dave suggests doubling down on frosted mini-wheats with chocolate syrup.
    • Sugar, Dopamine, and Decompression:

      • Why Dave binges chocolate at night while watching Knicks games.
      • Doug’s take on dopamine, cravings, and why recovery is all about consistency.
    • The Dopey Fitness Challenge:

      • Dave vows to run a Couch-to-5K… maybe. Doug advises him to take it one step at a time.
      • “It’s not about losing 30 pounds in two weeks, Dave.”
    Listener Love 🎶:
    • Jake’s Banjo Cover:
      • West Virginia listener Jake delivers a raw, soulful banjo rendition of Dave’s song with an original third verse about surviving hard times.
      • It’s shaky, heartfelt, and the perfect way to end the episode.

    Featured Guests:

    • Hamilton Morris
Genius chemist, filmmaker, and explorer of the psychedelic unknown. Watch Hamilton’s Pharmacopoeia on Vice TV.

    • Doug Bopst
Author, podcaster, and fitness guru. Follow him at @DougBopst and check out The Adversity Advantage Podcast.

Dopey Podcast: The Kratom Special 🎙️🌿

Get ready for a Kratom deep dive in this episode of Dopey! Dave brings together two amazing guests for a rollercoaster conversation that balances expert knowledge, raw personal experience, and a sprinkle of humor. 🎢✨

Part 1: Expert Insights with Jana Wu 🧠📚

Dave chats with Jana Wu, a mental health professional from Mountainside, to demystify the world of Kratom. Jana sheds light on Kratom’s complex role in addiction recovery, public health, and regulation. Topics include:

    • Sugar vs. Kratom: The parallels between sugar addiction and Kratom use. 🍪➡️🌿
    • The cultural explosion of Kratom post-COVID and why it’s become so accessible. 🛒📦
    • Should Kratom be sold in gas stations? (Spoiler: probably not.) ⛽🛑
    • Cannabis legalization, Kratom regulation, and the larger societal shift toward harm reduction. 🌱⚖️

Jana offers thoughtful perspectives on how we as a society can approach substances like Kratom without resorting to prohibition. She also opens up about the challenges of discussing this topic as a professional in the recovery field. A fascinating, must-listen conversation! 🔥

    Part 2: B. Getz’s Raw Kratom Journey 🎵🌍

In the second half, Dave welcomes back B. Getz, the host of the Upful Life Podcast and a longtime Dopey fan-favorite. B. reflects on his eight-year daily Kratom habit, his recent decision to quit, and what that process has taught him. Highlights include:

    • Finding Kratom: How B. turned to Kratom after a devastating Oxycontin addiction. 💊➡️🌿
    • The pros and cons of Kratom as a harm reduction tool versus its potential for dependency. ⚖️
    • Tapering Tips: How B. used a mix of supplements, planning, and support to quit Kratom. 🕊️💪
    • “Blue balls of the real deal”: What Kratom feels like and how it kept his “switch” off. 🛑💡
    • Going out with a bang: B. shares his wild concoction of cannabis syrup and Kratom extract shots in a playful nod to his past. 🎉🍹

B.’s story is a testament to resilience, transparency, and the power of partnership. His openness about the challenges and rewards of stepping away from Kratom will inspire anyone navigating a similar journey. 🙌

    Themes & Takeaways

    • Recovery isn’t one-size-fits-all: Harm reduction tools like Kratom can save lives, but they require responsibility and self-awareness. 🧩
    • Community support matters: Whether it’s a partner, the Dopey Nation, or Reddit groups, transparency and connection are key. 🤝💬
    • Everyone’s journey is unique: Whether abstinence, harm reduction, or something in between, there’s no “right” way—just your way. 🌟

    Shoutouts 🎉

    • Jana Woo for her wisdom and dedication to helping people in recovery. 🙏
    • B. Getz for his raw honesty and incredible storytelling. Catch his podcast Upful Life for more music and culture insights! 🎧🎶
